Spain, Ourense Ourense ACUAES The Ourense Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) is located in Galicia in north-west Spain. Public water authority company Acuaes launched a public tender for the design and construction of the new WWTP over a period of 30 months, with a consortium composed of DEGREMONT (SUEZ Treatment Solutions), PESA, and COPASA winning the tender. Cambi was contracted to provide a thermal hydrolysis unit for the plant. The Ourense WWTP was specially designed to comply with strict European directives on wastewater treatment and ensure minimum environmental impact. The water and sludge lines include innovative technologies to reduce energy consumption, minimise biosolids volume, and recover sludge for agricultural use. Cambi’s thermal hydrolysis process was selected as sludge pre-treatment for anaerobic digestion. By pre-treating sludge with Cambi’s thermal hydrolysis process, Ourense WWTP now serves a population equivalent of 290,000 compared with the previous capacity of 88,000. The Cambi system also increases biogas production, reused at the WWTP as fuel to generate part of the energy consumed onsite. Hydrolysing the sludge ensures that final biosolids are free of pathogens and odour, making them suitable for agricultural use. The B2-4 thermal hydrolysis unit’s mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and control elements are mounted inside a standard 40-foot container, which reduced the time required for onsite installation and connection.
