Steven Engler Mount Royal University, CA [email protected] Umbanda is a dynamic and varied Brazilian spirit-incorporation tradition first recorded in the early twentieth century. This article problematizes the ambiguity of categorizing Umbanda as an ‘Afro-Brazilian’ religion, given the acknowledged centrality of elements of Kardecist Spiritism. It makes a case that Umbanda is best categorized as a hybridizing Brazilian Spiritism. Though most Umbandists belong to groups with strong African influences alongside Kardecist elements, many belong to groups with few or no African elements, reflecting greater Kardecist influence. -

Methods: A parallel, cluster-randomized trial in which 20 public primary Health Care Units (PHCUs) were randomly allocated to the intervention (10 PHCUs) or control (10 PHCUs) group. The study population included pregnant women aged 18 or above with a gestational age of 20 weeks or less. Pregnant women receiving ANC in intervention PHCUs were invited through leaflets and posters to register in PRENACEL. Women who registered in PRENACEL received a weekly set of short text messages with health education and health promotion content related to pregnancy and childbirth and were also able to clarify ANC queries through SMS. All women received routine ANC. The primary outcome was the proportion of women with high ANC Score, a composite measure of coverage of recommended ANC practices. Chi-square or Fisher’s exact tests and multivariate log-binomial regression were used to analyze the outcomes. Results: A total of 1210 eligible women received ANC in the participating PHCUs and took part of this study (770 in the intervention group and 440 in the control group). -

Wendy Greene* In recent years, the Brazilian states of Rio de Janeiro, So Paulo, and Mato Grasso du Sol have implemented race-conscious affirmative action programs in higher education. These states established admissions quotas in public universities '' for Afro-Brazilians or afrodescendentes. As a result, determining who is "Black has become a complex yet important undertaking in Brazil. Scholars and the general public alike have claimed that the determination of Blackness in Brazil is different than in the United States; determining Blackness in the United States is allegedly a simpler task than in Brazil. IACHR Rapporteurship on the Rights of People of African Descent and Against Racial Discrimination Lecture series “Transforming the Invisible into the Visible” OAS May 14, 2014 Lecture: Racial Innocence in the Americas: A U.S. – Latin American Comparison Prof. Tanya Katerí Hernández, Fordham University School of Law There are approximately 150 million people of African descent in Latin America, representing about one-third of the total population.i Yet, these are considered conservative demographic figures given the histories of undercounting the number of persons of African descent on Latin American national censuses and often completely omitting a racial/ethnic origin census question.ii At the same time, persons of African descent make up more than 40 percent of the poor in Latin America and have been consistently marginalized and denigrated as undesirable elements of the society since the abolition of slavery across the Americas.iii Yet, the view that “racism does not exist” is pervasive in Latin America despite the advent of social justice movements and social science researchers demonstrating the contrary. When the BBC surveyed Latin Americans in 2005 regarding the existence of racism, a significant number of respondents emphatically denied the existence of racism. Many, for instance, made statements such as “Latin Americans are not racist,” and “Latin-America is not a racist region, for the simple fact that the majority of the population is either indigenous, creole, or mixed.”iv Thus the denial of racism is rooted in what many scholars have critiqued as the “myth of racial democracy” – the notion that the racial mixture (mestizaje/mestiçagem) in a population is emblematic of racial harmony and insulated from racial discord and inequality. -

Heitor P. de Moura Filho The Slave Population in Pernambuco, Brazil, 1560-1872: A Macrodemographic Reconstruction Abstract This paper exposes a demographic model to represent the evolution of the population of African slaves brought to the province of Pernambuco, Brazil, from 1560 to 1872, including their descendants. The main conclusion at this stage of the research is the confirmation that realistic combinations of mortality and fertility parameters, in a spreadsheet-based simulation, succeed in generating populations of size and distribution by age and sex that fit with those of Brazil’s first nationwide census, in 1872. Such combinations of parameters also reinforce the thesis that the slave trade was the main motor for the growth of the slave population and its descendants in that region. The time series of African slaves disembarked in Pernambuco, researched and organized by Daniel Domingues da Silva and David Eltis (2008), constitutes the main demographic flow to influence the population of this province. -

From the beginning of her career she recognized this con- nection and understood the complexity of health problems and peoples’ needs when seeking care. Her commitment took the form of both scientific output and also her contributions to the various fields in which she worked. As well as her contribu- tion to the concept of the work process of nursing, she contributed to thinking on health practices and multi-professional training in the construction of a differentiated body of knowledge, which she approached from the perspective of the struggle for democracy in health and understanding of this as a right of citizenship. -

Preface This report describes selected workplace safety and health conditions and policies in Brazil. The discussion of conditions focuses on the quality of reporting about acute fatal and non-fatal work injuries. The review of policies focuses on the enforcement of safety regulations, but surveys other public interventions as well. The report was supported by a grant from the Alcoa Foundation to the RAND Center for Health and Safety in the Workplace. It was conducted within the RAND Labor and Population Unit. Abstract Objectives The objectives of this paper are a) To examine the incidence of fatal and non-fatal occupational injury rates in Brazil and b)To provide a selective overview of Brazil’s public policies to prevent those injuries, especially its program of workplace inspections. Methods We supplemented a literature review on work injuries and public prevention policies in Brazil with interviews with epidemiologists, government officials, and business and labor officials and with analyses of the 2012 Social Security data base on reported work injuries.
