Theoretical Implications of the Beachy Amish-Mennonites DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Cory Alexander Anderson Graduate Program in Rural Sociology The Ohio State University 2014 Dissertation Committee: Joseph Donnermeyer, Advisor Richard Moore Edward Crenshaw Copyrighted by Cory Alexander Anderson 2014 Abstract One of the hallmarks of social science is the interaction of theory and methods/data, the former guiding the latter and the latter refining the former, in a cyclical relationship. The goal of theory is to provide explanations for and even predict a range of human behaviors. One potential cause of theoretical stagnation is an over focus on a singular, usually easily accessible group. Given the persistence of plain Anabaptists like the Amish as a highly distinct subgroup in American society, their utility for refining sociological theories is persuasive, but has rarely been employed to this end because of their social inaccessibility, shyness towards social science research, and the popular interpretive frames placed on them that distract would-be investigators. Even with Amish-focused scholarship, the emphasis has been largely on describing the population or applying theory to understand the Amish case, but not returning findings back to theory in critique and revision. This dissertation introduces and contextualizes the plain Anabaptists, then describes the Beachy Amish-Mennonites, a group within the Amish religious tension, but dealing markedly with tensions between separatism and assimilation. Following this introduction are three independent studies that demonstrate the use of plain Anabaptists to refine theory. -

International Journal of Innovative Research and Advanced Studies (IJIRAS) ISSN: 2394-4404 Volume 4 Issue 5, May 2017 Voices From The Periphery: Indian English Writing From The Northeast Priyanka Kakoti Assistant Professor, Dept of English, Goalpara College, Assam Abstract: The term North East India tends to homogenize a vastly heterogeneous region and is collectively applied to the eight states of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Tripura and Sikkim. Writings in English which have emerged from the region in recent times is significant for these are not just voices from the margin but they also tend to negotiate the centre-periphery relationship. These writings not just seek to deconstruct stereotypical views of the Northeast, but they also represent the very ethos of the region. Writers in English from the region have had to face diverse obstacles but with the spirit in which they have met the challenges indicates an increase in the repertoire of the literature produced in the region and also it is hoped that these writers would brig about some influence on the English literature from the country. ‘Now that the trees have spoken’ Ranjit Hoskote ‘Now that the trees have spoken’ presents the work of four artists: Bhuri Bai, Ladoo Bai, Narmada Prasad Tekam and Ram Singh Urveti. Their paintings, which are being exhibited in Mumbai for the first time, form part of a collection built up over the last five years by Dadiba Pundole. They way-mark the process of dialogue that this Bombay-based gallerist and collector has enjoyed with the artists, in the course of his research trips into central India. Born and raised in Madhya Pradesh, the protagonists of ‘Now that the trees have spoken’ represent that emergent third field of artistic production in contemporary Indian culture which is neither metropolitan nor rural, neither (post)modernist nor traditional, neither derived from academic training nor inherited without change from tribal custom. Indeed, as theorists and curators actively engaged with mapping this third field (including J Swaminathan, Jyotindra Jain, Gulammohammed Sheikh and Nancy Adajania) have demonstrated, descriptions such as ‘tribal’ and ‘folk’, although still used as convenient shorthand, are worse than useless. Generated from the typological obsessions of the colonial census, these labels have long been responsible for a dreadful incarceration. They have reduced thousands of individuals to the happenstance of birth, registering them primarily as bearers of community identities rather than as citizens of a Republic. And, once circumscribed as Warlis, Bhils, Gonds or Saoras, these individuals have had to mortgage their free-floating, self-renewing imaginative energies to the regime of the emporium. None of the four artists presented in ‘Now that the trees have spoken’ inherits a primordial ‘folk art’. -

The Amish, one of the few surviving folk cultures in the United States, still sing the hymns in the original German. Their ancestors penned the words to these hymns nearly five hundred years ago on another continent. Ironically, the Amish arose in opposition to the Latin Christian Church (later known as the Roman Catholic Church), yet could be considered to be nearly their equal in their tradition. -

HERNING MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART Ranjit Hoskote: Signposting the Indian Highway Ranjit Hoskote You Can’t Drive Down the Same Highway Twice… …as Ed Ruscha might have said to Heraclitus. But to begin this story properly: two artists, two highways, two time horizons a decade apart in India. Atul Dodiya’s memorable painting, ‘Highway: For Mansur’, was first shown at his 1999Vadehra Art Gallery solo exhibition in New Delhi. The painting is dominated by a pair of vultures, a quotation culled from the folios of the Mughal artist Mansur; the birds look down on a highway that cuts diagonally across a desert. The decisiveness of this symbol of progress is negated by a broken-down car that stands right in the middle of it. The sun beats down on the marooned driver, whose ineffectual attempts at repairing his vehicle are viewed with interest by the predators. In the lower half of the frame, Dodiya inserts an enclosure in which a painter, identifiably the irrepressible satirist and gay artist Bhupen Khakhar, bends over his work. Veined with melancholia as well as quixotic humour, this painting prompts several interpretations. Does the car symbolise the fate of painting as an artistic choice, at a time when new media possibilities were opening up; is the car shorthand for the project of modernism? Or is this an elegy for the beat-up postcolonial nation-state, becalmed in the dunes of globalisation? In an admittedly summary reading, ‘Highway: For Mansur’ could be viewed as an allegory embodying a dilemma that has immobilised the artist, even as he contemplates flamboyant encounters with history in the confines of his studio. -

Benjamin Abraham University of Western Sydney Abstract: This article makes a case study of ‘flarfing’ (a creative Facebook user practice with roots in found-text poetry) in order to contribute to an understanding of the potentials and limitations facing users of online social networking sites who wish to address the issue of online hate speech. The practice of ‘flarfing’ involves users posting ‘blue text’ hyperlinked Facebook page names into status updates and comment threads. Facebook flarf sends a visible, though often non-literal, message to offenders and onlookers about what kinds of speech the responding activist(s) find (un)acceptable in online discussion, belonging to a category of agonistic online activism that repurposes the tools of internet trolling for activist ends. I argue this practice represents users attempting to ‘take responsibility’ for the culture of online spaces they inhabit, promoting intolerance to hate speech online. Of English Rajiv Gandhi University Arunachal Pradesh Abstract: Twentieth century is broadly known for the rise of the spirit and notion of nationalism, particularly in Asia and Africa. In the process of decolonization the imagination of „nation‟ as an ontological and existential creation came into being. The nations enjoyed their phoenix rise from the debris of their imperial past for the new light of the day. Dispelling the darkness nations like India came up with new hopes and desires dismantling the imperial discourses. The crisis of national discourse is represented in Indian texts of the age. This crisis manifests itself in tensions over the choice of a national language, over resource allotment between villages and cities, over struggles between marginal and mainstream cultures that result in the growth of alienation of certain parts of the country. The novelists like Siddhartha Deb from North-East India write about these tensions in his fictional representations. His writings are close observations on India‟s contemporary situations. He focuses on the internal crises and sufferings of a person in relation to his society. His keen observation and writings of his native place include facts related to politics and social norms. Deb‟s Surface (2005) makes a major contribution highlighting the extremely complex situation of India‟s North-East region with the exploring of certain contentious issues. -

Towards an Alternative Indian Poetry Akshaya K. Rath One of the debates that has kept literary scholars of the present generation engaged and has ample implication for teaching pedagogy is the problem of canon-formation in Indian English poetry. One of the ways in which such canon- making operates is through the compilation, use and importance of anthologies. Anthology making is a conscious political act that sanctions a poet or poem its literary status. It has given rise to the publication of numerous anthologies in the Indian scenario and in the recent decades we have witnessed the emergence of a handful of alternative anthologies. Anthologies in general remain compact; they are convenient and often less expensive than purchasing separate texts. Those are some of the reasons for their popularity. However, as the case has been, inclusion of a poet or poem is hardly an innocent phenomenon. We have witnessed that canonical anthologies in India are exclusive about their selection of poets and poems, and in most cases the editor‘s profession remains central to anthology making. Hence, there is a need to address the issue of anthology making in Indian scenario that decides the future of poetry/poets in India. This paper explores the historiography of anthology making in India in the light of the great Indian language debate put forward by Buddhadeva Bose. It also highlights that there a significant transition in the subject of canon-formation at the turn of the century with the rise of an alternative canon. The politics of inclusion and exclusion—of anthologizing and publishing Indian English poetry—will be central to the discussion of anthologizing alternative Indian English poetry. -

Its feminist perspective aims to debate and discuss new ideas both in theory and practice. In addition to serving as a resource for academics, it also establishes guidelines for policy makers. Nivedini embraces a multidisciplinary approach, while retaining an intellectual rigor and factual accuracy in a simple style. It expects the contributors to define and explain technical terms and acronyms properly. Nivedini envisages issues on gender related subjects such as media, labour, culture and sexuality from a post disciplinary perspective. The journal also contains sections that encourage debate, as well as reviews of conferences, journals, books and films. The journal welcomes submissions in all disciplines and is especially interested in paper/articles written from an interdisciplinary approach to gender issues which focuses on new directions, ideas and modes of inquiry to reinvigorate studies for a new generation of researchers and readers. Topics covered include studies of gender related to: • Sexuality with its various conceptions of differences • Production and reception of meaning and knowledge. • Cultural institutions, practices, policies and powers. • Technology, change, development and globalisation in media and culture. • Convergences between intellectual, popular and corporate culture. • Cultural studies of neglected regions or areas of inquiry. • Debate on the adequacy and future of various disciplinary traditions, methods and topics in cultural studies.
