International Journal of Innovative Research and Advanced Studies (IJIRAS) ISSN: 2394-4404 Volume 4 Issue 5, May 2017 Voices From The Periphery: Indian English Writing From The Northeast Priyanka Kakoti Assistant Professor, Dept of English, Goalpara College, Assam Abstract: The term North East India tends to homogenize a vastly heterogeneous region and is collectively applied to the eight states of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Tripura and Sikkim. Writings in English which have emerged from the region in recent times is significant for these are not just voices from the margin but they also tend to negotiate the centre-periphery relationship. These writings not just seek to deconstruct stereotypical views of the Northeast, but they also represent the very ethos of the region. Writers in English from the region have had to face diverse obstacles but with the spirit in which they have met the challenges indicates an increase in the repertoire of the literature produced in the region and also it is hoped that these writers would brig about some influence on the English literature from the country. A CONCERN OF CULTURE, TRADITION AND ECOLOGY IN KYNPHAM SING NONGKYNRIH’S THE YEARNING OF SEEDS. Dr. Lakhimai Mili Assistant Profess, Dept. of English Yumnam Nirmala Devi Research Scholar, Dept. of English ABSTRACT : Literature from Northeast comes with variety of hues in terms of their culture, ethnicity, traditions and religious practices. The clash between the outside/foreign culture and inside/indigenous culture can be seen in almost all the writers from Northeast India. Modern tradition and urbanization brought about erosion of indigenous tradition thereby shattering the ancient beliefs and practices. The natural landscapes with its rich tapestry of flora and fauna is very much connected to the language and culture of the people. But due to the intrusion of foreign or outside culture, life in North-east is passing through a drastic change which makes the conscious natives to look back in anger and sadness of losing the indigenous traditions. The paper is an attempt to analyze Kynpham Sing Nongkynrih’s collection of poems, “The Season Of The Wind” from the poetry volume titled “The Yearning Of Seeds” where the author voices his deep concern of losing his indigenous culture and tradition and the fear of ecological imbalance by the ravage of modernization and urbanization. It highlights the importance of maintaining the age old traditional values for its own survival and for survival of indigenous identities. ‘Northeast’ is a term used to club together eight disparate states that happen to extend to the extreme northeast periphery of the Indian union. It is a region created only after the partition of the Indian subcontinent. -

Quest Journals Journal of Research in Humanities and Social Science Volume 8 ~ Issue 4 (2020)pp: 42-47 ISSN(Online):2321-9467 www.questjournals.org Research Paper A Critical Appraisal of Fiction in English by Women Writers from India’s North-East Dr. Adenuo Shirat Luikham Assistant Professor, Department of English Don Bosco College, Kohima ABSTRACT: It is without a doubt that writings in English emerging from the North-East region of India encapsulate a complexity that is a result of the multi-ethnic and multi-lingual cultures of its people and the issues that are unique to the region’s ruptured history. For this reason(s), writers from the North-East explore a kaleidoscope of thematic concerns in their fiction. The literature produced by women from this region also encompass all of these thematic concerns, however, their fiction also carries the burden of alternative textual readings as they are written from a place of subjective existence. A notable phenomenon is that many contemporary writers from the region are female and the prolific flow of English fiction from the North-East comes from women writers, and such a development cannot be overlooked because it appears to foretell that women’s fiction from the region straddles a critical stage in India’s literary history. It is with this conviction that the paper deems it important to estimate the contribution of women writers from the North-East to literature by giving a critical appraisal of their fiction (looking at the socio-cultural context(s) that they write from) and make an attempt to examine the niche that they occupy in the broader canvas of Indian writings in English. -

The poetry from this region characterizes with the genuine and pragmatic depiction of the events and happenings that play a deciding factor of the region’s power and politics. They represent the common peoples’ weal and woes, wish and worth only to give voice to their choice and ploys thereby becoming the poetry from this region as poetry of witness or the ‘art of witness’. The masters of such poetry are none but a group of young promising poets-writers who by choice or circumstances take the charge and responsively of the entire north east region to unfold the untold in verse forms only to make the peripheral and long neglected zone to the limelight of the mainstream and beyond. These poets make possible of the conglomeration between the poetry of witness with the poetry of greatness. They achieve both by virtue of their practical and pragmatic depiction in verse becoming the voice of the voiceless of the situation of real conflicts and concretes. -

KUNJO SINGH Head, Department of English Manipur University, India Abstract: The term ‘ecopolitics’ refers to the various aspects of ecology, biodiversity, ecomysticism, ecofeminism and ecosophy. ‘Ecopolitics’ also known as ‘Green Politics’ will be used as the basic tool for analyzing the writings of the chosen authors from different states of Northeast India. Prose writing in English from Northeast India is a powerful one dealing with the themes of nationhood, identity, insurgency, ethnic violence, corruption in the bureaucracy, home, migration, exile, memory, etc. A regional ecological concern is inherent in most of the writing. The ecological and acoustical world is explored in the plays written in Manipuri and Assamese and translated into English. These plays deal with ecology, myths and legends, tradition, mysticism, etc. There is the enactment of the very idea of ecomysticism – the idea of living together peacefully and maintaining a balance in the entire ecosystem. Contemporary poetry in English from India’s Northeast has multifaceted voices. It presents a vista of images of the mountains, hills, rivers, myths and legends, tradition and culture, and multi-ethnic people of the region. -

Identities in the Northeast are based on ethnic, linguistic and cultural diversities. In early Indian literature, all the tribes living in the Northeast were known by one common identity, i. e. the Kiratas (Bhattacharjee 2011). Chapter I Introduction Most research on Indian poetry in English has focused on either the general thematic aspects or the changing perceptions of English as the medium of poetic expression in India. The language of Indian poetry in English has been analyzed for structural aspects and for nativisation, but the process of creation of such poetry demands further research. There is a need to understand the processes of signification from a cultural semiotic perspective, an area relatively unexplored by critics and researchers of Indian poetry in English. Moreover very little work on contemporary Indian English poetry in this direction is available. The underlying hypothesis for the study is that the principles of ‘Cultural Semiotics’ can provide a framework for analyzing the processes of signification in the contemporary Indian Poetry in English. Application of semiotic frameworks to literary texts helps in revealing the ways in which meaning is produced by the structures of interdependent signs, by codes and conventions. Theories of semiotics proposed by theorists such as Saussure, Pierce, Barthes, Greimas, Jakobson etc. have proved beneficial to understand the processes of signification in literature and move beyond hermeneutic function of literary research. The present study attempts to analyse the cultural semiotics of the contemporary Indian poetry in English and develop a framework to understand the processes of meaning creation and evolution of such poetry as a cultural text, based on the framework primarily proposed by Lotman but also draws upon the works of Todorov, Kristeva, Barthes, Rifaterre, Williams and others. To discuss the cultural aspects of contemporary Indian poetry in English we need a fresh look at definitions of ‘culture’ from the Indian perspective. -
