State University of New York College at Cortland Students March Against Sexual Assault

Students unite against sexual assault by spreading awareness

By Jessica Downer Cooy Editor

Candles illuminated the many faces of faculty, staff and students who gathered on the steps of Corey Union. It was a cold night for April, but they were all there for one reason: to have their voices heard against sexual assault and Take Back the Night. The Take Back the Night event, sponsored by Cort- land Against Another Rape (C.A.A.R.), was held last Tues- day, April 5, on the Corey Union steps. The event is held once every semester to raise aware- ness about sexual assault on the campus and throughout the Cort- land community. 60 percent of rapes go unreported, and one in four women and one in six men are sexual assaulted. This event brings these statistics to light. The event started with a welcome, followed by a speech

Athletes run 5k to raise money for 2-year- old Mason Koval By Dan Harding Jr. Editor-in-Chief Some 50 Cortland students last Saturday ran in the first ever Dragon Dash, a 5k race around lower campus sponsored by the sports management club to ben- efit Mason Koval. At 15 months old, Mason was diagnosed with Hypothalamic Hamartomas; a rare tumor at the base of the brain which causes seizures, premature “I just want him to have as normal a life as possible.” puberty and behavioral problems, among other side affects. When co-chairs of the event Christopher Depalma, Cody Komeda, and Dustin Rutz were organizing the race, they agreed that they wanted to donate their proceeds to charity. While look- ing for a charity to donate to, their professor George Vazenia approached them and asked that, they consider helping a young boy he knew named Mason. He photo by Dan Harding Jr.

Three Cortland ruggers represented C-State this Sunday in this year’s All Star match, as a NYS Upstate Beaver. First to be selected was Senior scrum half Tony Aqualina or “Aqua” as he’s known on the field. Aqua was first selected last year for his skill and athleticism, and he was chosen again after he helped lead the ruggers to a NYS Championship. Next to be selected were Senior Props Mike Compton and Kevin Fullan or “City of Compton” and “Jumanji”, respectively. They were noticed for their impressive performance in the SUNY Championship Tournament on Saturday. The three Cortland All Stars helped the NYS Beavers defeat Metro NY 31-20. “Aqua” started the match at scrum half. With no prior practice with his unfamiliar team, he was consistent in getting the ball out to the wing. His precision passing led to a number of scoring plays, while his endurance helped him play strong the entire first half. “Aqua” was replaced the second half by another scrum half from upstate NY. The second half “City of Compton” and “Jumanji” came in as props. “Jumanji” had a spectacular game. He fought for possession at every ruck and had an impressive assist on the wing. Following one of his teammates he received a pass towards the outside; from then he sucked the defense in and passed it just in time to another all-star who ran it in for the score. “City of Compton” helped maul, or drive, a player in from photo provided by Teddy Montalvo the ten meter line.
