In one myth, Orion boasted he would kill all the wild animals on the earth. His companion Artemis was greatly saddened and arranged for Orion to be immortalised among the stars. Scorpius, the scorpion, was placed on the opposite side of the sky so that Orion would never be hurt by it again. To this day, Orion is never seen in the sky at the same time as Scorpius. ASTRONOMICAL DELIGHTS If you’re very careful, on December 7 a very old crescent moon will occult Venus in daylight, late morning. You’ll need to look to the west of the sun-don’t catch the sun in your binoculars- around 11:10 or so for the disappearance on the bright side of the moon. Start your search before 11am so you know where Venus and the moon are. Venus will be occulted for about 90 minutes. There’s a really good lunar libration on December 21 at the north Polar region. Good night to poke around the north polar landscape craters that are not normally discernible. -

După apariţia lucrării Geneza, evoluţia şi sfârşitul Universului, un volum care s+a bucurat de un real succes, apariţia lucrării „Carte de Astronomie” reprezintă un adevărat eveniment editorial, cu atât mai mult cu cât ea constitue în acelaşi timp un material monografic şi un material cu caracter didactic. Cartea este structurată în 13 capitole, trecând în revistă problematica generală a Astronomiei cu puţine elemente de Cosmologie. Cartea îşi propune şi reuşeşte pe deplin să ofere răspunsuri la câteva întrebări fundamentale şi tulburătoare legate de existenţa fiinţei umane şi a dimensiunii cosmice a acestei existenţe, incită la dialog şi la dorinţa de cunoaştere. Consider că, în ansamblul său, cartea poate contribui la îmbunătăţirea educaţiei ştiinţifice a tinerilor elevi şi este deosebit de utilă pentru toţi „actorii” implicaţi în procesul de predare-învăţare: elevi, părinţi, profesori. -

This article is an open access publication Abstract As low- and intermediate-mass stars reach the asymptotic giant branch (AGB), they have developed into intriguing and complex objects that are major players in the cosmic gas/dust cycle. At this stage, their appearance and evolution are strongly affected by a range of dynamical processes. Large-scale convective flows bring newly- formed chemical elements to the stellar surface and, together with pulsations, they trigger shock waves in the extended stellar atmosphere. There, massive outflows of gas and dust have their origin, which enrich the interstellar medium and, eventually, lead to a transformation of the cool luminous giants into white dwarfs. Dust grains forming in the upper atmospheric layers play a critical role in the wind acceleration process, by scattering and absorbing stellar photons and transferring their outward-directed momentum to the surrounding gas through collisions. Recent progress in high-angular- resolution instrumentation, from the visual to the radio regime, is leading to valuable new insights into the complex dynamical atmospheres of AGB stars and their wind- forming regions. Observations are revealing asymmetries and inhomogeneities in the photospheric and dust-forming layers which vary on time-scales of months, as well as more long-lived large-scale structures in the circumstellar envelopes. High-angular- resolution observations indicate at what distances from the stars dust condensation occurs, and they give information on the chemical composition and sizes of dust grains in the close vicinity of cool giants. -
