Anti-Semitism in Bulgaria reached its apogee with the anti-Jewish legislation, passed and enacted in the country in 1940-1944 which resulted in looting and humiliating 50 000 Bulgarian Jews and dispatching 11 343 Jews from Thrace, Macedonia and Pirot to Nazi death-camps in 1943. With the political changes after 9th September, 1944, Anti-Semitism decreased temporarily but reappeared in new forms during the “struggle against cosmopolitism” and the “doctors’ plot” in the Soviet Union in 1949-1953. Later on, some sporadic Anti- Semitic acts and activities took place under the guise of “struggle against Zionism” which disturbed the normal life of those 5000 Jews who remained in Bulgaria. - 4 - - 5 - - MANIFESTATIONS OF ANTI-SEMITISM IN BULGARIA - - MANIFESTATIONS OF ANTI-SEMITISM IN BULGARIA - ANTI-SEMITISM IN BULGARIA The newsletter’s content reveals two distinct groups of more important manifestations of Anti-Semitism. The first group is concerned with acts of vandalism and violation of buildings, monuments, religious sites etc; the second 2009-2010 one – with events organized by and for groups of people, object or subject of different Anti-Semitic and xenophobic propaganda. The other manifestations and cases have their own strictly individual characteristics and should be treated separately. STOYNEVA*) Synopsis: The first study of aerophytic cryptogams from granite monuments investigated in the Bulgarian town Koprivshtitsa (Sredna Gora Mountains – 1058 m a.s.l.) compared with two iden- tical bronze and limestone copies in the capital town Sofia (650 m a.s.l.) is presented. Greenish lay- ers on the surface of one of the Koprivshtitsa monuments consisted of the aerophytic green alga Apatococcus lobatus together with free-living and lichenized green alga Trebouxia arboricola and the aerophytic green alga Coccomyxa sp. Some lichens as Lepraria cf. neglecta and Candelariella vitellina were also found. The same lichens together with further species like Protoparmeliopsis muralis var. muralis and Caloplaca sp. were detected on the surrounding stonework of the second Koprivshtitsa monument. On the surface of the calcareous statue in Sofia only some initial stages of Apatococcus lobatus were registered. The algal taxa have been studied in cultures and some com- ments on their taxonomy and distribution are given.     ANNUAL REPORT 2019 Every child deserves support in order to grow into a person responsible to itself, to the others and to the world around us FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Summarising 2019 would be difficult – conclusions, failures, achievements and plans seem to be one and the same, heavily mixed with stamina. If I should be using one word, it would be exactly this - stamina, but the word most impor- tant to me in 2019 is "grateful". I am grateful to my friends, my colleagues and my family for the support, the warmth and the faith. Last year was difficult for the Centre and so challeng- ing that there is no longer a Centre for Inclusive Education but an Association for Shared Learning. We have changed our name and parted with dear col- leagues, but we have not changed our nature. And it is in our nature to help, share and support. Living in uncertainty means living without knowledge, which has, so far, been key, without plans and, mostly, without control. These are difficult times in which we are learning many and sometimes unpleasant things about our- selves and about others. We take responsibility and slowly begin to get used to the almost unbearable discomfort of uncertainty. And we have become more procreative and coherent. At least this is what happened to us, to the associa- tion in which we share learning. It is surprising how many things we have managed to achieve in one year and how many changes we have managed to accept. We received a valuable inter- national award for our One School for All programme, held a successful camp for 130 children, published a book, bought a school and started transform- ing it into a green education centre..

    BULGARIA 2019 INTERNATIONAL RELIGIOUS FREEDOM REPORT Executive Summary The constitution provides for freedom of religion and conscience. Religious groups may worship without registering, but registered groups receive benefits. The constitution recognizes Eastern Orthodox Christianity as the country’s “traditional” religion, and the law exempts the Bulgarian Orthodox Church (BOC) from registration. In April the Supreme Cassation Court convicted 13 Muslim leaders of spreading Salafi Islam, which the court ruled was an antidemocratic ideology. It sentenced one imam to one year in prison. In December the Pazardjik District Court convicted 14 Romani Muslims of supporting ISIS, assisting foreign fighters, incitement to war, and spreading Salafi Islam. Thirteen received prison sentences, and one received a suspended sentence. In August the government granted registration to the Ahmadiyya Muslim community. Muslim leaders said several municipalities denied permission to build new or rehabilitate existing religious facilities. The Office of the Grand Mufti said its attempts to litigate its recognition as the successor to the pre-1949 organization Muslim Religious Communities for the purpose of reclaiming properties seized by the former communist government had reached an impasse. Parliament passed legislation allowing religious groups to defer payment of outstanding revenue obligations for 10 years and providing for a six-fold increase in government funding for the BOC and the Muslim community. There were multiple court decisions invalidating local administrations’ prohibitions on Jehovah’s Witnesses’ proselytizing activities; however, police in several municipalities continued to state the group could not distribute literature on the street or proselytize door-to-door. According to a European Commission survey released in May, 20 percent of respondents said religious discrimination was widespread.

FISI 2012 was organized by the Bulgarian Fulbright Commission but its ultimate success heavily depended on the financial support, cooperation and synergy of America for Bulgaria Foundation and other institutions such as Sofia University and its Centre of Excellence Dialogue Europe, the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, and Monmouth College in Illinois, USA.
