en stěží by si bylo možné představit Slovo úvodem vhodnější prostředí pro dosud největší slovinskou literární prezentaci v zahraničí, než které nabízí rok od roku lepší a ži- vější pražský knižní veletrh: literární a kulturní styky mezi Slovinskem a Českem jsou silné již po staletí. Největší slovinský básník France Prešeren (1800-1849) ve své poeziiJ popisuje krásu děvčete z Brna; básník, prozaik a průkopník slovinské literární vědy Fran Levstik (1831–1887) navštěvoval seminář v Olomouci až do té doby, kdy ho musel opustit kvůli označení jeho první básnické sbírky z nemorálnosti. Drama nejvýznamnějšího slovinského prozaika a dramatika Ivana Cankara (1876-1918) Za narodov blagor (Pro blaho národa), knižně vydáno roku 1901, bylo hráno nejprve v Praze, roku 2005 uplyne od zinscenování přesně 100 let. Nejpřekládanější slovinský román, roku 1938 vydaný Alamut Vladimira Bartola (1903-1967), byl krátce po slovinském vydání přeložen do češtiny, téměř o padesát let později, v osmdesátých letech, se díky francouzskému a španělskému překladu začal tento příběh o náboženském fanatismu šířit po celém světě. Literární historik Oton Ber- kopec (1906-1988), jenž většinu svého života prožil v Praze, se ve čtyřicátých letech postaral o dvě antologie slovinské poezie v češtině, které jsou prvními obsáhlejšími prezentacemi slovinské literatury v cizím jazyce. Slovinsko-české literární styky pokračují až do dnešní doby. Nejvíce titulů slovinské literatury je (kromě chorvatštiny) přeloženo do češtiny: v posledním desetiletí vychází průměrně pět knih slovin- ských autorů ročně. Od vyhlášení samostatnosti roku 1991 se slovinská literatura stále více uplatňuje ve světě; v různých překladech vyšly knihy více než šedesáti současných autorů. Tomaž Šalamun, Drago Jančar a Aleš Debeljak mají každý přes třicet přeložených knih; všichni také přijedou do Prahy, kromě nich i brilantní básnířka a protagonistka své poezie Svetlana Makarovič a Dane Zajc, který značně ovlivnil všechny mladší básnické generace, a přes dvacet jiných, doma i v zahraničí uznávaných spiso- vatelů. -

c e p s Journal | Vol.5 | No4 | Year 2015 31 The Importance of Visual Reading for the Interpretation of a Literary Text1 Janja Batič*2 and Dragica Haramija3 • In this paper, the two authors showcase the results of a research survey on the role of illustrations in the interpretation of literary texts. The sur- vey sample included students of primary education and preschool educa- tion, who were given the poem Učenjak (Scholar) by Niko Grafenauer and asked to answer questions regarding the character’s personality and appearance, the literary space, and other factors. The first group of in- terviewees was given the poem illustrated by Lidija Osterc and the other the same poem illustrated by Marjan Manček. The results showed that the illustration had a significant impact on the message conveyed by the poem, particularly when the illustrator added the context by representing the character’s environment (which was not explicitly given in the text). Furthermore, the results showed the need for the comprehensive reading of an illustrated text, given that it is the interaction between the verbal and the visual that provides vital information necessary for the reader to understand the message of the dedicated literary work. About Slovenian Illustrators Slovenian illustration has a long and rich history despite there being considerable language limitations for the development of this market. Yet these problems do not have a great impact on the quality of this art form in Slovenia. Illustrated books for children have a respectable position in our culture. The time after the Second World War saw the biggest boom in illustration, no doubt due to the ambitious and sensitive editors who wooed acclaimed painters to cooperate with them. This gave rise to a healthy competition and ambition. Artists painted with devotion and passion, with authenticity and quality as their main goals. In the 1960s and all the way to the 1990s there even existed the phrase “Slovenian school of illustration”, even though it never actually existed, not as a direction or principle, let alone as a school. The sole common trait was the guideline that children deserve only the best. Today, when new generations of artists are in full swing, nothing is different. In addition to a constant reprinting of books that were published decades ago yet managed to keep a sense of freshness and contemporariness, new books are being issued, written by up-and-coming young authors who foster their own unique styles with great care and passion. And it is this possibility of, demand for even, authentic expression that drives and inspires young and talented authors to take up this artistic path. In bookstores and at big exhibition, such as biennials of illustration, it is exactly this colourful array of styles that is so enchanting. -

Books start keeping them company very early on, and only later do other things start to interest them. True readers, though, do not abandon their love of books easily. This would not be the case if Slovenians had not had the fi rst books in their language printed as early as 500 years ago, if they did not have a well-developed publishing system, and if they lacked excellent authors: illustrators and writers. In the 20th century, the Ljubljana graphic arts school was internationally famous and the Ljubljana school of book illustration fl ourished with it (Ljubljana is, of course, the capital of Slovenia). This was the basis from which the present splendid company of visual artists grew and prospered, gaining notable international and domestic awards for their illustrations. The writers of children's and youth literature are also very popular in Slovenia, and they do not lack awards, either. This catalogue holds all that is best and most alive. The curiosity of young book-lovers and their joy in reading makes Slovenian publishers issue many books by foreign authors, in addition to those by Slovenian authors. This publication is an attempt to help foreign publishers satisfy their curiosity, and that of their young readers, about the best things Slovenia has to off er. We can thus together add to the joy which good books bring to this world. Biographical information on the candidate Damijan Stepančič was born on 22 May 1969 in Ljubljana. After completing the secondary school for design and photography in Ljubljana, he continued his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts, in the field of design. With the recognition that a classical approach suited him better in confronting fundamental artistic problems, he decided in 1991, after completing two years of design, to study at the Department of Painting, from which he graduated in 1996 under Prof. Gustav Gnamuš with a cycle of paintings of the four elements and Prof. Marko Uršič with a theoretical philosophical work, Alchemists and Painters. Since then, he has devoted himself particularly actively to illustrating books for young people. He also cooperates increasingly with the periodical press, both for the young (PIL, PILplus) and adult readers (Albert, Playboy, Nova, Literatura).
