This panel will take its first in‐depth look at the First Amendment philosophy of Justice Brett Kavanaugh through the prism of eight new controversial Supreme Court cases. One was written in just a single day. The 5‐4 decision overturned a Judge Stanley Marcus stay of the execution of a Muslim prisoner because Georgia would not let an imam into the death chamber. The Supreme Court will take much more time to decide whether a massive stone cross must be removed from a traffic intersection in Maryland. The Court also is expected to put to rest its long debate over legislators favoring their own parties through gerrymandering. A police bust of a partier at ArcticMan in the Hoodoo Mountains of Alaska should set the rules for speech‐based retaliatory arrests. Two years ago the Court opened the door to disparaging trademarks. Now the owner of the FUCT mark wants the ban on scandalous and immoral marks gone too.

The Association also honored Immed- iate-Past Chancellor Andrew A. Chirls at the event. Chancellor Alan M. Feldman lauded Chirls for his accomplishments during 2005, including his outreach to immigrant communities and his com- mitment to judicial independence. Feldman presented Chirls with a gold box, an exact replica of the one present- ed to Andrew Hamilton for his defense of John Peter Zenger in 1735.     2016 ALUMNI AWARDS BIOGRAPHIES Joanna Visser Adjoian C’04, L’10 (Young Alumni Award) Joanna Visser Adjoian, Esq. is co-founder and Co-Director of the Youth Sentencing & Reentry Project (YSRP). YSRP uses direct service and policy advocacy to transform the experiences of children prosecuted in the adult criminal justice system, and to ensure fair and thoughtful resentencing and reentry for individuals who were sentenced to life without parole as children (“juvenile lifers”). Prior to co-founding YSRP, Joanna served as Associate Director and Staff Attorney of the Toll Public Interest Center at the University of Pennsylvania Law School, Penn Law Postgraduate Fellow at Juvenile Law Center, federal law clerk for Judge Joel Schneider in the United States District Court of the District of New Jersey, and family law paralegal at Philadelphia Legal Assistance. At Juvenile Law Center, Joanna coordinated the Pennsylvania Coalition for the Fair Sentencing of Youth, and co-authored Amicus briefs to the U.S. Supreme Court and state supreme courts on juvenile life without parole sentences. At the Toll Center, she oversaw the Center’s 26 student pro bono projects, offered guidance to more than 100 student leaders and directly supervised students in new and existing pro bono initiatives. Joanna is a 2014 Echoing Green Fellow, 2016 Claneil Emerging Leader Fellow, and a finalist for a 2016 Excellence in Advocacy Award from the Professional Women in Advocacy Conference. She chairs the Philadelphia Bar Association Public Interest Section's Legal Rights of Children Committee, and serves as a member of the Toll Public Interest Center Advisory Board.

[FN1] Most law schools also offer judicial internship or externship courses, allowing students to earn academic credit for work performed as judicial clerks. [FN2] These courses often involve a classroom component in which students read about and discuss judicial decision-making, the judge's and clerk's roles, judicial writing, and other relevant top- ics. Recognizing the value of working behind the scenes in a judge's chambers, some law students even seek out and obtain volunteer positions as judicial clerks. [FN3] A wide variety of materials about judicial clerkships is available in bar journals, law reviews, and books, and on relevant web sites. This bibliography brings together the more recent of these materials and categorizes them by topic. The resulting compilation should be useful to academic professionals planning judicial-clerkship classes or externship experiences, law students contemplating judicial-clerkship positions and wanting to know more, and recent law school graduates preparing to enter judicial clerkships. [FN4] *240 We limited the bibliography to materials published since 1980 for two reasons. First, reliance on judi- cial clerks has exploded since the 1960s, [FN5] and advice to clerks may have changed as clerkship positions have become both more competitive and more available.
