1 OPEN INDIVIDUALISM / NEOMONOPSYCHISM Iacopo Vettori This paper summarizes my personal experience in discovering the Open Individualism. Because I found it by my own way, occasionally in the paper I refer to it as “my proposal”, but it would be intended as “the Open Individualism proposal”. By the way, because some issues represent only my personal opinion, and can be evaluated differently from other authors, I left the references as they were. This text can be considered a summary of what I wrote in my personal website dedicated to this subject, that I completed before knowing the book "I Am You" by Daniel Kolak and the other persons who collaborate in this research. However, these studies have relied on univariate analyses, reducing power and limiting context-specific under- standing. Here we aim to provide an integrated perspective of the genetic basis of meta- bolites by leveraging the Finnish Metabolic Syndrome In Men (METSIM) cohort, a unique genetic resource which contains metabolic measurements, mostly lipids, across distinct time points as well as information on statin usage. We increase effective sample size by an average of two-fold by applying the Covariates for Multi-phenotype Studies (CMS) approach, identifying 588 significant SNP-metabolite associations, including 228 new associations. Our analysis pinpoints a small number of master metabolic regulator genes, balancing the relative proportion of dozens of metabolite levels. On the Aggression Diffusion Modeling and Minimization in Twitter MARINOS POIITIS, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece ATHENA VAKALI, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece NICOLAS KOURTELLIS, Telefonica Research, Spain Aggression in online social networks has been studied mostly from the perspective of machine learning which detects such behavior in a static context. However, the way aggression diffuses in the network has received little attention as it embeds modeling challenges. In fact, modeling how aggression propagates from one user to another, is an important research topic since it can enable effective aggression monitoring, especially in media platforms which up to now apply simplistic user blocking techniques. In this paper, we address aggression propagation modeling and minimization in Twitter, since it is a popular microblogging platform at which aggression had several onsets. We propose various methods building on two well-known diffusion models, Independent Cascade (퐼퐶) and Linear Threshold (!) ), to study the aggression evolution in the social network. We experimentally investigate how well each method can model aggression propagation using real Twitter data, while varying parameters, such as seed users selection, graph edge weighting, users’ activation timing, etc. It is found that the best performing strategies are the ones to select seed users with a degree-based approach, weigh user edges based on their social circles’ overlaps, and activate users according to their aggression levels. We further employ the best performing models to predict which ordinary real users could become aggressive (and vice versa) in the future, and achieve up to 퐴*퐶=0.89 in this prediction task. Finally, we investigate aggression minimization by launching competitive cascades to “inform” and “heal” aggressors. -

There has been much talk about fundamentalism of late. While most people's thought on the topic go to the 9/11 attacks against the United States, or to the ongoing war in Iraq, fundamentalism is affecting science and its relationship to society in a way that may have dire long-term consequences. Of course, religious fundamentalism has always had a history of antagonism with science, and – before the birth of modern science – with philosophy, the age-old vehicle of the human attempt to exercise critical thinking and rationality to solve problems and pursue knowledge. “Fundamentalism” is defined by the Oxford Dictionary of the Social Sciences 1 as “A movement that asserts the primacy of religious values in social and political life and calls for a return to a 'fundamental' or pure form of religion.” In its broadest sense, however, fundamentalism is a form of ideological intransigence which is not limited to religion, but includes political positions as well (for example, in the case of some extreme forms of “environmentalism”). In the United States, the main version of the modern conflict between science and religious fundamentalism is epitomized by the infamous Scopes trial that occurred in 1925 in Tennessee, when the teaching of evolution was challenged for the first time 2,3. That battle is still being fought, for example in Dover, Pennsylvania, where at the time of this writing a court of law is considering the legitimacy of teaching “intelligent design” (a form of creationism) in public schools. -

Psychological Medicine, 1980,10, 607-609 Printed in Great Britain EDITORIAL The ethological approach to aggression1 There are several ways in which ethology, the biological study of behaviour, can contribute to our understanding of aggression. First of all, by studying animals we can get some idea of what aggression is and how it relates to other, similar patterns of behaviour. We can also begin to grasp the reasons why natural selection has led to the widespread appearance of apparently destructive behaviour. To come to grips with this question requires the study of animals in their natural environment, for this is the environment to which they are adapted and only in it can the survival value of their behaviour be appreciated. By contrast, a final contribution of ethology, that of understanding the causal mechanisms underlying aggression, usually comes from work in the laboratory, for such research requires carefully controlled experiments. Ethology has shed light on all these topics, perhaps parti- cularly in the 15 years since Konrad Lorenz, one of the founding fathers of the discipline, discussed the subject in his book On Aggression. Lorenz's views were widely publicized and had great popular appeal: the fact that few ethologists agreed with what he said may explain why so many have since devoted time to studying aggression. The result, as I shall argue here, is that ethologists now have a much better insight into what aggression is, how it is caused and what functions it serves, and it is an insight sharply at odds with the ideas put forward by Lorenz. -

Investigations into roles for endocytosis in LIN-12/Notch signaling and its regulation Jessica Chan Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy under the Executive Committee of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2020 © 2020 Jessica Chan All Rights Reserved Abstract The LIN-12/Notch signaling pathway is highly conserved in all animals, and is crucial for proper development. It is a key pathway in specifying cell fate in many cellular contexts, and dysregulation of the pathway can have deleterious consequences. Therefore, understanding how LIN-12/Notch signaling is regulated in different contexts has been a main area of interest in the field. Previous studies in different model organisms have identified many modes of regulation of the signaling pathway, one of which is endocytosis of the ligand and receptor. Here, I further investigated the role of endocytosis in LIN-12/Notch signaling in multiple developmental contexts in Caenorhabditis elegans. Work in Drosophila and vertebrates had previously established that ligand-mediated activation of Notch requires ubiquitination of the intracellular domain of the transmembrane ligand and the activity of the endocytic adaptor Epsin in the signaling cell. The consensus in the field is that Epsin-mediated endocytosis of mono-ubiquitinated ligand generates a pulling force that exposes a cleavage site in Notch for an ADAM protease, a critical step in signal transduction. In contrast, in this thesis, I examined two different transmembrane ligands in several different cell contexts and found that activation of LIN-12/Notch and the paralogous GLP-1/Notch in C.
