Notes for PUA Songbook Two This song book is intended for the purpose of community singing at the ukulele association song circles and not for financial gain. The chord chart on the inside cover is complements of Ralph Shaw, http://www.ralphshaw.ca/ Things to help you get around the song sheets: The songs are in alphabetical order except when there is a two page song. The two- page songs were moved so they could be seen at the same time when the book is open flat. There is a table of contents to point you to the right page for a song. S.N. stands for Starting Note - the 1st note of the melody. It is at the top of each song along with the time signature and other information. N.C. stands for NO CHORD. Don’t play chords during the lyric section with this abbreviation over the phrase. “Ritard.” Ritardando —slowing down (abbreviation: rit. or ritard.) This symbol is used at the end of a number of songs and usually means: give each bar or word of the phrase designated twice the normal length – 4 beats, vs. 2. Used as an ending to some songs. A Coda is a symbol used to show the concluding passage of a piece or movement, it is used as a directional sign on a few pages. Repeat Symbols: ||: :|| Anything between these two symbols are repeated – usually at the end of a song – to indicate that we repeat the last line on or more times to end the song. Many songs have had chords simplified so that inexperienced players can join in more easily. -

He is usually listed as one of the Fireside Poets. Whittier was strongly influenced by the Scottish poet Robert Burns. Highly regarded in his lifetime and for a period thereafter, he is now remembered for his poem Snow-Bound, and the words of the hymn Dear Lord and Father of Mankind, from his poem The Brewing of Soma, sung to music by Hubert Parry. <b>Biography</b> <b>Early Life and Work</b> John Greenleaf Whittier was born to John and Abigail (Hussey) at their rural homestead near Haverhill, Massachusetts, on December 17, 1807. He grew up on the farm in a household with his parents, a brother and two sisters, a maternal aunt and paternal uncle, and a constant flow of visitors and hired hands for the farm. Their farm was not very profitable. There was only enough money to get by. Whittier himself was not cut out for hard farm labor and suffered from bad health and physical frailty his whole life. Although he received little formal education, he was an avid reader who studied his father’s six books on Quakerism until their teachings became the foundation of his ideology. Whittier was heavily influenced by the doctrines of his religion, particularly its stress on humanitarianism, compassion, and social responsibility. -

Spurgeon gives a viable definition of imagery: It is the little word-picture used by a poet or prose writer to illustrate, illuminate, and embellish his thought. It is a description or an idea, which by comparison or analogy, stated or understood, with something else, transmits to us through the emotions and associations it arouses, something of the wholeness, the depth, and richness of the way the writer views, conceives or has felt what he is telling us.^ Therefore, "in the case of the poet, it is chiefly through his images that he, to some extent, unconsciously gives himself away. The poet un wittingly lays bare his own innermost likes and dislikes, observations and interests, associations of thought and attitudes of mind and beliefs 2 in and through the images." From Countee Cull en's definition of poetry, one can infer that he considered imagery to play a major role in the production of poetry: Good poetry is a lofty thought beautifully expressed. .. Poetry should not be too intellectual. It should deal more, I think, with the emotions. The highest type of poem is that which warmly stirs the emotions, which awakens a respon sive chord in the human heart.3 One also gets this same impression in his response that "if verse does not If strike the roots of you, for you it is not poetry. -
