  • “If Music Be the Food of Love, Play On
Magic Moments Jean Eugène Robert-Houdin (1805-1871) was the most famous of all French magicians, for he is considered the world over as the father of modern conjuring. Jean’s père sent his eleven-year-old son up the Loire to the University of Orléans (not to be confused with UNO) to prepare for a career as a lawyer. But his son wanted to become a watchmaker like his dad, and these skills trained him in all things mechanical. The first magician to use electricity, Houdin was sent to Algeria in 1856 by the French government to combat the influence of the dervishes by duplicating their feats - a real whirlwind tour. His books helped explain the art of magic to countless aficionados: his autobiography (1857), Confidences d’un prestidigitateur (1859), and Les Secrets de la prestidigitation et de la magie (1868). One such devotee was arguably the most renowned illusionist and escape artist in history. Born in Hungary in 1874 as Erich Weiss, he adopted the name Harry Houdini as a teenager after having read Houdin’s autobiography. Performing twenty shows a day, the young wizard was soon taking home twelve dollars a week. Before long he was an international success, and he would bring this magic moxie to the Crescent City on more than one occasion. It was pouring rain that day in downtown New Orleans, November 17, 1907, when a crowd of nearly 10,000 people gathered along the wharves near the Canal Street ferry landing to witness Houdini triple- manacled for a death-defying plunge into the Mississippi River.

  • PUA Green Book
Notes for PUA Songbook Two This song book is intended for the purpose of community singing at the ukulele association song circles and not for financial gain. The chord chart on the inside cover is complements of Ralph Shaw, http://www.ralphshaw.ca/ Things to help you get around the song sheets: The songs are in alphabetical order except when there is a two page song. The two- page songs were moved so they could be seen at the same time when the book is open flat. There is a table of contents to point you to the right page for a song. S.N. stands for Starting Note - the 1st note of the melody. It is at the top of each song along with the time signature and other information. N.C. stands for NO CHORD. Don’t play chords during the lyric section with this abbreviation over the phrase. “Ritard.” Ritardando —slowing down (abbreviation: rit. or ritard.) This symbol is used at the end of a number of songs and usually means: give each bar or word of the phrase designated twice the normal length – 4 beats, vs. 2. Used as an ending to some songs. A Coda is a symbol used to show the concluding passage of a piece or movement, it is used as a directional sign on a few pages. Repeat Symbols: ||: :|| Anything between these two symbols are repeated – usually at the end of a song – to indicate that we repeat the last line on or more times to end the song. Many songs have had chords simplified so that inexperienced players can join in more easily.

The Artist Alive: Explorations in Music, Art & Theology, by Christopher Pramuk (Winona, MN: Anselm Academic, 2019). Copyright © 2019 by Christopher Pramuk. All rights reserved. www.anselmacademic.org. Introduction Seeds of Awareness This book is inspired by an undergraduate course called “Music, Art, and Theology,” one of the most popular classes I teach and probably the course I’ve most enjoyed teaching. The reasons for this may be as straightforward as they are worthy of lament. In an era when study of the arts has become a practical afterthought, a “luxury” squeezed out of tight education budgets and shrinking liberal arts curricula, people intuitively yearn for spaces where they can explore together the landscape of the human heart opened up by music and, more generally, the arts. All kinds of people are attracted to the arts, but I have found that young adults especially, seeking something deeper and more worthy of their questions than what they find in highly quantitative and STEM-oriented curricula, are drawn into the horizon of the ineffable where the arts take us. Across some twenty-five years in the classroom, over and over again it has been my experience that young people of diverse religious, racial, and economic backgrounds, when given the opportunity, are eager to plumb the wellsprings of spirit where art commingles with the divine-human drama of faith. From my childhood to the present day, my own spirituality1 or way of being in the world has been profoundly shaped by music, not least its capacity to carry me beyond myself and into communion with the mysterious, transcendent dimension of reality.
