Sevilla won 1-0 at home so OL must better that victory in order to overtake their guests. One-nil would not be enough for Lyon as Sevilla would have the superior goal difference in all matches. Any other Lyon win by a one-goal margin and Sevilla go through on head-to-head away goals. • The fixture on 27 September – the first competitive encounter between the teams – went Sevilla's way thanks to Wissam Ben Yedder's second-half goal. It was only their second victory in six encounters with Ligue 1 opponents. Previous meetings • Two friendly matches between the sides yielded only one goal. On 30 July 2009 in Seville, the home side edged things 1-0 thanks to Ernesto Chevantón's goal four minutes from time. François Clerc and Jean II Makoun were both sent off for the visitors. • When the teams met in Lyon on 22 July 2014 it finished 0-0. Match background Lyon • The French side began their 14th group stage campaign with a 3-0 home win against Dinamo Zagreb. In the double header with Juventus they first lost 1-0 at home and then rescued a point away through Corentin Tolisso's 85th-minute equaliser in a 1-1 draw. • It was against Spanish opponents that the Ligue 1 runners-up achieved their solitary success last season, a 2-0 victory at Valencia CF on matchday six. It meant that they preserved their record of gaining at least one win in every campaign. • Lyon's home record against Liga clubs is W6 D3 L5; overall it is W9 D7 L13. Sevilla • Los Blanquirrojos began with a 0-0 draw at Juventus and in the double-header with Dinamo they first won 1-0 away and then 4-0 at home. • Last season Unai Emery's side put the disappointment at only finishing third in Group D behind them by lifting the UEFA Europa League for the third successive year and fifth time in 11 seasons. • If Jorge Sampaoli's charges lose to Lyon by two goals or more they would miss out on the knockout rounds, but consolation would come with the opportunity to defend their UEFA Europa League trophy. • In the 2015/16 UEFA Champions League Sevilla lost all three away fixtures. In the UEFA Europa League they won one of their four away games, drawing two, en route to the final in Basel where they overcame Liverpool FC 3-1. • The Andalusian club have lost on all three previous visits to France for competitive fixtures. • In the 2010/11 UEFA Europa League group stage they lost 4-2 at Paris Saint-Germain and went down 1-0 in 2004/05 and 2005/06 on two visits to LOSC Lille in the same competition.

    2021/2022 Ligue 1 Preview Guide INTRODUCTION After a historically close title race that saw four teams in the running Ligue 1 is back with no small amount of fanfare following a busy summer. Of those four sides, while Lille and Lyon have been relatively quiet as they try to consolidate under new managers, Monaco and Paris Saint-Germain have been eager participants in the mercato, buying well in a way that addresses the two sides’ needs. Nice and Rennes have also done some canny business in the offseason, to say nothing of Marseille’s flood of arrivals, but the discussions about pro- spective title favorites in France have to start and end with the capital side. Even as rumors swirl around the potential departure of Kylian Mbappé, it’s hard to argue that Paris Saint-Ger- main haven’t done their utmost to convince their young star to stay. At least, that is, if one judges by their transfer activity. The arrivals of Sergio Ramos, Gianluigi Donnarumma, Georginio Wijnaldum, and Achraf Hakimi have bolstered Mauricio Pochettino’s side in key areas whilst also adding another layer of dynamism. If he can keep his squad happy and balanced, this team looks as potent as any in Europe, Elsewhere, Monaco are probably best-equipped to challenge, even as they will have to contend with playing European football. The arrivals of Myron Boadu, Alexander Nübel and Ismail Jakobs look to be upgrades, and so long as Niko Kovac’s exciting, front-foot football remains in place and so do all of its key elements.
