The Supreme Court of New Hampshire affirmed their convictions in a published opinion rejecting state and federal Equal Protection Clause defenses. Contrary to federal appellate decisions, New Hampshire’s high court held an ordinance punishing only females for exposure of their areolas does not classify on the basis of gender. Alternatively, New Hampshire’s high court held the Ordinance would survive intermediate scrutiny anyway—a holding directly at odds with a recent Tenth Circuit decision, which in turn conflicts with decisions of the Seventh and Eighth Circuits. The questions presented are: 1. Does an ordinance expressly punishing only women, but not men, for identical conduct—being topless in public—classify on the basis of gender? 2. -

Erotic Ambiguities : the Female Nude in Art / 30111 Helen Mcdonald
1111 2 3 4 5111 EROTIC AMBIGUITIES 6 7 8 9 1011 1 2 3111 Art is always ambiguous. When it involves the female body it can also be erotic. 4 Erotic Ambiguities is a study of how contemporary women artists have recon- 5 ceptualised the figure of the female nude. Helen McDonald shows how, over 6 the past thirty years, artists have employed the idea of ambiguity to dismantle 7 the exclusive, classical ideal enshrined in the figure of the nude, and how they 8 have broadened the scope of the ideal to include differences of race, ethnicity, 9 sexuality and disability as well as gender. 20111 McDonald discusses the work of a wide range of women artists, including 1 Barbara Kruger, Judy Chicago, Mary Duffy, Zoe Leonard, Tracey Moffatt, Pat 2 Brassington and Sally Smart. She traces the shift in feminist art practices from 3 the early challenge to patriarchal representations of the female nude to contem- 4 porary, ‘postfeminist’ practices, influenced by theories of performativity, queer 5 theory and postcoloniality. McDonald argues that feminist efforts to develop 6 a more positive representation of the female body need to be reconsidered, 7 in the face of the resistant ambiguities and hybrid complexities of visual art in 8 the late 1990s. 9 30111 Helen McDonald is an Honorary Fellow in the School of Fine Arts, Classical 1 Studies and Archaeology at the University of Melbourne. 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 40111 1 2 3 44111 i RUNNING HEAD 1111 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 1011 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 20111 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 30111 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 40111 1 2 3 44111 ii RUNNING HEAD -
Social-Nudism.Pdf
www.all-about-psychology.com PRESENTS I. THE TABOO OF THE HUMAN BODY The wide-spread taboo attaching to the human body is a noteworthy phenomenon of social psychology. Clothing is worn, not merely for protection or for adornment, but to conceal various parts of the body from view. Clothes are not needed for protection in swimming, gymnastics, tennis and certain other sports, nor in rhythmic dancing. In most of these diversions there can be no question of adornment; in some cases garments interfere with the purpose of the activity; in some they may even be detrimental to health. Yet social pressure compels the wearing of some clothing in all these pursuits. This taboo of the body is fairly universal. It is found among savage and civilized races alike, and prevails in all climates. Most investigators in this field have been interested in the origin of clothing rather than in the rise of the taboo. The two problems are distinct, though closely related. The origin of the impulse to cover the body has been variously explained by different writers. It has been attributed to the need of protection from cold, insects, dampness, excessive heat, rough soil, thorns, evil spirits, etc.; or to the craving for adornment, especially in order to promote sexual attraction. A number of writers ascribe the origin of clothing to a primitive modesty instinct, which would make the body taboo a native or inherent trait of the human race. J. C. Flügel (1) reviews these conflicting theories at length. The reader is referred to his monograph and the sources which he cites for full treatment of the topic. -
Writing the Naked Body: Sex and Nudity in Nuala Ní Chonchuír's Nude

This text may be archived and redistributed both in electronic form and in hard copy, provided that the author and journal are properly cited and no fee is charged for access. Abstract. This essay looks into the deconstruction of the male gaze and the objectification process around the concepts of nudity and nakedness. Starting from the review of some of Martha Nussbaum’s, John Berger’s, or Laura Mulvey’s main ideas on the topic of the gaze and objectification, a practical analysis of some of the short stories contained in Nuala Ní Chonchúir’s Nude (2009) is provided. By so doing, I intend to examine the ways in which conventional objectification phenomena can be turned upside down, challenged or parodied in order to reveal cultural discriminatory undercurrents and offer a new non-objectifying visual and written representation of the naked body. Key Words. -

The Roosevelt Myth
THE ROOSEVELT MYTH BY JOHN T. FLYNN (1948) Flynn was a political reporter who supported the populist objectives of FDR early in his career but became an ardent critic later on, as he saw the blunders and corruption of the Roosevelt administration covered up by a compliant press. FDR was always portrayed as a peace-loving populist on the side of the "little guy" while many of his advisors were war mongers, communist sympathizers, and agents of Wall Street. This expose is a much needed corrective to the 'myth' of Roosevelt populism.
