It was empowering, engaging, and beyond what we expected. Watching so many students from various medical schools come together around one shared interest —Advocacy in Medicine— was incredibly rewarding and inspiring. Students had the opportunity to hear from leaders in the field of activism ranging from residents, nurses, and attendings, to public health officials.     Middle Atlantic Review of Latin American Studies, 2020 Vol. 4, No. 1, 80-102 Mafalda and Women’s Rights: A Canvass of the Sixties Mariana De Maio Lehigh University [email protected] Nathian Shae Rodríguez San Diego State University [email protected] Comic strips have often been avenues of cultural, social, and political expression. A strip born in Argentina during the 1960s, Mafalda, became a worldwide phenomenon emblematic of the struggling urban middle classes and the challenges faced by women. Employing incongruity theory with a feminist lens, this paper analyzes Mafalda within its sociopolitical and cultural context. The analysis suggests the comic strip contained the following four prominent themes: women’s rights; patriarchy and education; mundane domesticity; and Argentine class system and the bourgeoisie. The study has theoretical implications for media scholars who study the use of humor as a persuasive strategy and the role of satire in political communication. It also has practical implications for feminists and social justice activists who seek new ways to engage potential sympathizers to their causes. Una tira nacida en Argentina en la década del sesenta, Mafalda, se convirtió en un emblema mundial de las disminuidas clases medias urbanas y de los retos enfrentados por las mujeres. Con base en la teoría de la incongruencia considerada desde una perspectiva feminista, este estudio examina Mafalda dentro de su contexto sociopolítico y cultural.     BRÚJULA DEL PENSAMIENTO LA ESTRUCTURA DEL SABER MEDICO A LA LUZ DE LA HISTORIA POR PEDRO LAIN ENTRALGO Imaginad un inmenso escenario teatral; un escenario múltiple, con tantos compartimientos escénicos como regiones del planeta históricamente importantes: China, la India, la cuenca mesopotà­ mica, las tierras altas del Irán, el Mediterráneo y su contorno, las diversas partes de Europa, las dos Americas. Imaginad, además, que en cada uno de esos compartimientos fuese representada la historia a él correspondiente, mediante la acción de unos cuantos personajes. Asistiríamos así a un complejo drama, cuya estructura suscitaría en nosotros no pocos problemas. Por los menos, los cuatro siguientes: qué ha pasado realmente en cada compartimiento escénico: es el problema de las historias particulares de los diferentes pueblos; qué relación existe entre esas "historias particulares", y si esa relación puede ser reducida a unidad: es el problema de la historia universal; qué es y qué significa ese múltiple, total y unitario suceder en la vida y en el ser del hombre, su protagonista: es el problema de la filosofía de la historia; quién es el verdadero autor del drama representado, y cómo puede serlo: a tal problema trata de responder la teología de la historia. Permítase que yo, modesto historiador de la Medicina, me li­ mite a discernir la fracción médica de ese gigantesco drama. En cada uno de esos compartimientos escénicos, uno de los actores se emplea, en efecto, en el oficio de conocer y curar las enfermeda­ des de sus semejantes: es el médico. Su acción, genéricamente igual en todo lugar y en todo tiempo, presenta en cada porción del es­ cenario una figura distinta y cambiante.
