  • Kahlil Gibran a Tear and a Smile (1950)
“perplexity is the beginning of knowledge…” Kahlil Gibran A Tear and A Smile (1950) STYLIN’! SAMBA JOY VERSUS STRUCTURAL PRECISION THE SOCCER CASE STUDIES OF BRAZIL AND GERMANY Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for The Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Susan P. Milby, M.A. * * * * * The Ohio State University 2006 Dissertation Committee: Approved by Professor Melvin Adelman, Adviser Professor William J. Morgan Professor Sarah Fields _______________________________ Adviser College of Education Graduate Program Copyright by Susan P. Milby 2006 ABSTRACT Soccer playing style has not been addressed in detail in the academic literature, as playing style has often been dismissed as the aesthetic element of the game. Brief mention of playing style is considered when discussing national identity and gender. Through a literature research methodology and detailed study of game situations, this dissertation addresses a definitive definition of playing style and details the cultural elements that influence it. A case study analysis of German and Brazilian soccer exemplifies how cultural elements shape, influence, and intersect with playing style. Eight signature elements of playing style are determined: tactics, technique, body image, concept of soccer, values, tradition, ecological and a miscellaneous category. Each of these elements is then extrapolated for Germany and Brazil, setting up a comparative binary. Literature analysis further reinforces this contrasting comparison. Both history of the country and the sport history of the country are necessary determinants when considering style, as style must be historically situated when being discussed in order to avoid stereotypification. Historic time lines of significant German and Brazilian style changes are determined and interpretated.

When comparing participation rates, revenue figures, and overall popularity, there is no doubt that soccer deserves the title of “the world’s sport.” It has been utilized to bring many nations together by rallying for a common cause, fostering incorporation and participation, and providing a source of entertainment to millions.

  • Project 2010, As Stated by U.S
WECANFLY PRESENTEDBY CARLOSQUEIROZ &DANGASPAR ROJECT P2010 Winning the World Cup by 2010: Soccer’s Equivalent to the Apollo XI Moon Landing Throughout history, Americans have many times demonstrated a remarkable ability to accomplish extraordinary goals. While Americans do not own a monopoly on inventive- ness or problem solving, one fact sets them apart from the rest of the world. America’s collective resources and creativity are the greatest on earth. One of the best examples of American creativity was the Apollo XI manned lunar landing mission. “I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to earth.” –President John F. Kennedy May 25, 1961 President Kennedy’s challenge to America set in motion a collective effort of creativity, teamwork and technological excellence which led to America’s ultimate triumph in sci- ence and technology. Today, the USA is still the only country of the world to achieve such an extraordinary goal. For U.S. Soccer, the equivalent of another Apollo XI lunar landing is on the horizon. Project 2010, as stated by U.S. Soccer, has set a goal of playing host to, and to be in a position to win the World Cup in the year 2010. Project 2010, the boldest challenge yet to the sport in America, has begun. This report discusses the structure and programs that will be necessary if U.S. Soccer is to reach the goals set by Project 2010. It is a tall order, to be sure.
