Like all students of American history I knew well perhaps a half dozen of the most famous pamphlets of the Revolution, obviously worth republication, and I knew also of others, another half dozen or so, that would probably be worth considering. In the seventeenth century, the new market economic paradigm became increasingly dominant, replacing the old feudal economy. Theater functioned to “explain” this arrangement to the general populace and gradually it became part of what I call a “culture of empire” – a culture built up around the search for resources and markets that characterized imperial expansion. It also rationalized the depredations the Empire brought to those whose resources and labor were coveted by expansionists. This process intensified with the independence of the thirteen North American colonies, and theater began representing Native Americans and African American populations in ways that rationalized the dominant society’s behavior toward them. By utilizing an interdisciplinary approach, this research attempts to advance a more nuanced and realistic narrative of empire in the early modern and early republic periods. -

"Those That Play Your Clowns:" Comic Actors and Comic Acting on the 19th Century American Stage Barnard Hewitt (Barnard Hewitt's Fellows Address was delivered at the ATA Convention in Chicago, August 16, 1977.) It seems to me that critics and historians of theatre have neglected comedians and the acting of comedy, and I ask myself why should this be so? Nearly everyone enjoys the acting of comedy. As the box office has regularly demonstrated, more people enjoy comedy than enjoy serious drama. I suspect that comedy and comedians are neglected because critics and scholars feel, no doubt unconsciously that because they arouse laughter rather than pity and fear, they don't deserve serious study. Whatever the reason for this neglect, it seems to me unjust. In choosing the subject for this paper, I thought I might do something to redress that injustice. I hoped to identify early styles of comic acting on our stage, discover their origins in England, note mutations caused by their new environment, and take note of their evolution into new styles. I don't need to tell you how difficult it is to reconstruct with confidence the acting style of any period before acting was recorded on film. One must depend on what can be learned about representative individuals: about the individual's background, early training and experience, principal roles, what he said about acting and about his roles, pictures of him in character, and reports by his contemporaries - critics and ordinary theatregoers - of what he did and how he spoke. First-hand descriptions of an actor's performance in one or more roles are far and away the most enlightening evidence, but nothing approaching Charles Clarke's detailed description of Edwin Booth's Hamlet is available for an American comic actor.1 Comedians have written little about their art.2 What evidence I found is scattered and ambiguous when it is not contradictory. -

Freedom of the press is one of the most cherished freedoms in the United States. But what was the genesis for this idea? That is, how did the framers of the Constitution determine that a free press was necessary in the new government they were designing? In this chapter, you will learn about the ideas that supported the creation of the First Amendment. These ideas formed an ideology that supported press freedom, particularly as it has been defined in jurisprudence (which is a term that refers to the act of deciding court cases or the philosophy of law). While the “framers’ intent” is still a matter of debate, it is worthwhile to consider the primary ideas of the time and the his- torical context in which the First Amendment was drafted. Emerging from the British roots of the colonists and supported by the Enlighten- ment philosophy of the day, three ideas emerged to support the notion of freedom of expression: (1) the importance of the informed citizen; (2) the desirability of a free and open exchange of ideas; and (3) the right to criticize government. -

Adelman Program in Early American Economy and Society The Library Company of Philadelphia A Paper Submitted to ―Ireland, America, and the Worlds of Mathew Carey‖ Co-Sponsored by: The McNeil Center for Early American Studies The Program in Early American Economy and Society The Library Company of Philadelphia, The University of Pennsylvania Libraries Philadelphia, PA October 27-29, 2011 *Please do not cite without permission of the author 2 This paper is a first attempt to describe the collective experience of those printers who immigrated to North America during the Revolutionary era, defined here as the period between 1756 and 1796. It suggests these printers integrated themselves into the colonial part of an imperial communications structure and then into a new national communications structure in order to achieve business success. Historians have amply demonstrated that the eighteenth century Atlantic economy relied heavily on the social and cultural capital that people amassed through their connections and networks.1 This reliance was even stronger in the printing trade because the trade depended on the circulation of news, information, and ideas to provide the raw material for its products. In order to be successful, one had to cultivate other printers, ship captains, leading commercial men, and far-flung correspondents as sources of news and literary production. Immigrants by and large started at a slight disadvantage to their native-born competitors because they for the most part lacked these connections in a North American context. On the other hand, some immigrant printers had an enormous advantage in the credit and networks they had developed in Europe, and which they parlayed into commercial and political success once they landed in North America. -

The Real Revolution: The Global Story of American Independence Study Guide Introduction This study guide is designed to enhance students’ mastery of key content and skills in U.S. and World History, geography, economics and other disciplines through examination of the people, ideas, and trade networks that created the American Revolution. It is intended to be used in conjunction with The Real Revolution: The Global Story of American Independence by Sibert Award-winning author Marc Aronson, along with other materials. The lessons will complement curriculum in the social studies, particularly colonial and pre-Revolutionary U.S. history, mercantilism and colonialism in world history, boom-bust economic cycles and the origins of representative institutions. Each lesson is designed with multiple objectives in mind, to make the most efficient use of teachers’ time. Many of these students elect to take Economics because of their interest in history and government. While I provide students with some current examples of how models do and do not fit into the real world, this unit provides another way students can view an historical event by applying economic analysis. It should be a good review and test of their newly acquired skills. Although many of them become reasonably proficient at graphing clear directions (such as demonstrating a shift in the demand) by the end of Microeconomics, many students still have difficulty applying their tools to more intricate situations. I intend to use this unit as a culminating activity for microeconomics and in a way as a general introduction to some of the macroeconomic principles (fiscal policy, for example). -

Loyalist Newspapers of the American Revolution 1763-1783: A Bibliography TIMOTHY M. BARNES S BIBLIOGRAPHY is both an aid to scholars of the American Revolution and an indicator of the abundance of Loyalist liter- ature. I have designed the bibliography, particularly the in- ternal arrangement of the two major divisions, to facilitate research. The division of MAJOR and MINOR newspapers is based not only on the volume and quality of a paper's contri- bution to Loyalism, but also on the completeness of present archival holdings. I have arranged both basic parts by colony and city, and then by short and full title. Complete dates of the newspaper are indicated in the short title; the full title repre- sents title changes that occurred during the complete run. I have examined four features of MAJOR Loyalist news- papers: (l) names of printers, accompanied by the date they assumed and relinquished control of a paper; (2) a brief but complete biography of each printer; (s) a paper's contribution to Loyalism; and (4) the availability ofa microform copy and one original copy. The internal pattern of MINOR Loyalist news- papers is the same, except for the deletion of the printer's biography and the paper's contributions. The organization of this bibliography, especially the inter- nal arrangement ofa newspaper's contributions, should not be considered definitive, only suggestive.
