  • Rock Music's Crusade of Authenticity
ROCK MUSIC’S CRUSADE OF AUTHENTICITY by DANIEL BROMFIELD A THESIS Presented to the Department of Journalism and the Robert D. Clark Honors College in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Arts June 2016 An Abstract of the Thesis of Daniel Bromfield for the degree of Bachelor of Arts in the School of Journalism and Communications to be taken June 2016 Title: Rock Music's Crusade Of Authenticity Prof. Thomas Wheeler This thesis attempts to define rock music's standards of authenticity and explore their origins. Included are comparison of rock's standards of authenticity to those of other genres and an exploration of how authenticity has been perceived throughout the history of rock music. This study argues that rock's standards of authenticity are unusual among pop music genres in that they entail artists both writing their own songs and playing their own instruments. This is in contrast to genres like hip hop, contemporary pop, and R&B, which have their own quite different standards of authenticity. Quotes from rock fans, critics, and musicians are used to provide insight into rock's standards of authenticity and how they developed over time. ii Acknowledgements I would like to first and foremost thank my father for introducing me to music. If not for his decision to turn me on to the Beatles one sunny day in June 2006, I would surely be pursuing a far more boring career – and thesis topic. And I would like to thank my mother for giving me a great life and being endlessly supportive.

House Music: How the Pop Industry Excused Itself From One Of The Most Important Musical Movements of The 20th Century By Brian Lindgren MUSC 7662X - The History of Popular Music and Technology Spring 2020 18 May 2020 © Copyright 2020 Brian Lindgren Abstract In the words of house music legend Frankie Knuckles, house music was disco's revenge. What did he mean by that? In many important ways, house music continued where it left off when it was dramatically cast from American society in the now infamous Disco Demolition Night of July 1979. Riding on the wave of many important social upheavals of the 1960s, disco laid a few important foundations for dance music as we know it today. It also challenged the pop industry power-structure by creating new avenues for music to top the Billboard charts. However, in the final analysis the popularity of disco became its undoing. House music continued to ride on a few of the important waves of disco. The longstanding success of house, however, was in a new development: the independent artist/producer. Young people who began to experiment with early consumer electronic instruments were responsible for creating this new genre of music. This new and exciting sound took hold in Chicago, Detroit and the UK before spreading around the world as the sound we know today as house music. 1 Thirty eight years after the term "House Music" was coined in 1982, the genre has incontestably become a global musical and cultural phenomenon. Few genres in music history can claim this kind of influence.

I thought we'd start out with a pretty kind of general question of just where are you from and how did you get started playing music. Manuel: Well, I'm from Memphis. I was born 1945 here at the Baptist hospital, raised here. I got interested in guitar maybe ten, eleven years old and I convinced my mother to get me a guitar from Beale Street, my brother in law took me down, we had five dollars to find a guitar. I went to Nathan's pawn shop and I found a Stella which was an acoustic guitar and the strings [1:00] Were that high, an inch high. I didn't know any better and literally you would've had to put a sea clamps on it to make a cord. Anyway, I started out with that, tried to play it and I couldn't and I found a guitar teacher, Elmred Tanqueray, and I started taking lessons from him and he just encouraged me get another guitar we can't do anything so Christmas 1956, I begged and borrowed not borrowed but begged my mother for a rig and got

My hypothesis was that changes in the music over time would mirror the socio-political trends that were simultaneously taking place. Two key components set this research apart from much of the previous literature on the subject. First, the empirical and quantitative nature of this study is relatively unique, as most previous research on this topic has been qualitative in nature.

  • One-Hit Wonders
ABC-CLIO eBook Collection x close PRINT (select citation style below) Music in American Life: An Encyclopedia of the Songs, Styles, Stars, and Stories That Shaped Our Culture By: Jacqueline Edmondson, Editor One-Hit Wonders Trevor de Clercq The term “one-hit wonder” is commonly understood to describe a musical performer or group that achieves extreme popular success with one song but does not achieve any similar further success. In short, a one-hit wonder is a recording artist with only one hit song. (The term is also sometimes used to refer to the hit song itself.) In its typical usage, “one-hit wonder” carries a somewhat negative connotation, because a truly good artist would presumably be able to produce more than just a single popular song. As a result, some might dismiss the sole hit of a one-hit wonder as a random bit of good luck, due more to external factors than any significant artistic talent. Indeed, many one-hit wonders are linked with novelty, kitschy, or gimmicky songs, most of which have been all but forgotten. But while some one-hit wonders might be considered little more than passing musical curiosities, many have sustained long and productive careers. The inability to repeat mainstream commercial success does not necessarily imply a lack of artistic, musical, or even financial success. Success, in other words, can be measured in a number of ways, and the question of what exactly constitutes a one-hit wonder is somewhat open to interpretation. The simplest way to measure the success of a band (or song) is via some objective criterion.
