Katzenstein Was Considered One of the Pioneers of Performance Art in Israel, but in Recent Years He Has Become Famous for His Sculptures

Katzenstein was one of the most prominent Israeli artists, winner of the Sandel prize, represented Israel in Biennales, and characterized himself in a blunt fashion. In his work in Vienna, he wrote on a wall with his own blood: “In our culture the language is secret”. He was a member of some musical groups, one of which included Ohad Pishuf. Picture: Moti Milrod Katsenstein in 2015 next to his work: “Backyard” Katzenstein was considered one of the pioneers of performance art in Israel, but in recent years he has become famous for his sculptures. During his career, he won several prestigious titles and prizes, including the Dizengoff Prize (2017) and the Sandel Prize (2014). His last exhibition was exhibited earlier this year at Hezi Cohen Gallery. Katzenstein was born in 1951 in Tel Aviv, the only son of German-born parents who immigrated to Israel before the Holocaust. In 1973, he participated as a reserve soldier in the Yom Kippur War, from which he returned with post traumatic stress disorder. He studied art at the Avni School in Tel Aviv and then went to the United States. He earned his first degree at the University of Indiana and an MA in San Francisco. After his studies, he integrated into the performance scene, which took a significant place in the art world in New York. He introduced his works in some of the most important spaces in this field in the 1980s, such as The Kitchen and No-Se-No. -

The Artist Eran Shakine Eran Shakine was born in 1962 in Israel, to a French father and Hungarian mother. Both were Shoa survivors who came to Israel after the Second World War. After living in Paris, London and New York City, he currently lives in Tel Aviv. Shakine had solo shows in The Drawing Center in New York, as well as in London, Paris, Brussels, Toronto and Tel Aviv. His works are in the permanent collections of the British Museum, London; Ludwig Museum, Aachen, Germany; Tel Aviv Museum of Art, Israel and the Israel Museum, Jerusalem as well as many corporate and private collections. The Department of History of Art Self-Evaluation Report December 2012 1 Contents Executive Summary Chapter 1 – The Institution Chapter 2 – The Parent Unit Operating the Study Programs Under Evaluation Chapter 3 – The Evaluated Study Program Chapter 4 – Research (with appendices 1-5) Chapter 5 – The Self-Evaluation Process, Summary and Conclusions Requested Appendices (tables are included in the chapters) 2 Executive Summary The foundation for the study of the history of art in Israel was laid by the late Professor Moshe Barasch at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in 1960 and was approved by the Senate in 1964. Since its very beginning, the Department of History of Art has endeavored to pursue excellence. Its graduates have been serving in many positions in the other four Israeli universities, major museums, and research institutions. The department's faculty members, many of whom have received international academic recognition, are an integral part of the worldwide scholarly community. Three members have been awarded the prestigious Israel Prize. Currently, the department's third generation of art historians continues to perform excellent research and dedicates itself to high pedagogical missions, in spite of the struggles with severe budget cuts. It trains students in a diverse curriculum comprised of six fields of expertise (rather than the basic four offered by the parallel departments at the other four Israeli universities). Despite the current decline of interest among youngsters in our country and elsewhere in the humanities, including the field of art history, our department at the Hebrew University remains the largest in the country and attracts students who are eager to pursue this humanistic discipline. -

In the field of literature, the program in support of poets who work in schools reinforcing theteaching of English was expanded. The Poets in Developing Colleges Program has placed black writers in residence on campuses, primarily in Southern states, and the program has helped to produce good student poets.The Coordinating Council of Literary Magazines has made 203 grants to 152 magazines and has organized 21 activities intended to improve the content, production, and distribution of non-commercial literary magazines. Discovery Awards were made to 41 young or relatively unknown writers who were regarded as having exceptional talent. In the field of education, the Visual Artists-in-ResidenceProject placed artists in six schools, and the Artists-in-the-Schools program utilized 300 dancers, musicians, poets, theatre artists, painters, and sculptors in bringing the arts directly to elementary and secondary school students in 31 states.
