Scope Note The majority of the items are videocassette tapes from the WUSF TV station between 1980 and 1989. They cover the activities of USF professors, students, and staff during the time period, including the building of the Sun Dome and the opening of the Sarasota campus. There is a significant body of work from USF President John Lott Brown's tenure. Arrangement Note: Most of the items are Fujifilm-brand videotapes. The reel-to-reel collection, when brand names are available, are Ampex or Scotch-brand. There are 22 reel-to-reel tapes, eleven of which are numbered. Although there is a clear sequence of numbers, from 1 to 26, tapes 4 and 12-25 are either unlabeled or missing. The majority were created by WUSF, but two are from alternate institutions. The two non-USF insitutions included are the Population Action Council and the Florida Mental Health Institute. There are two cassette tapes, unnumbered, from 1987. They are both about John Lott Brown's retirement, with the Ampex-brand tape discussing his decision to retire and the Fujifilm-brand tape containing his retirement speech. The videotapes are extensive, but missing numbers 15, 18, 26-7, 44-53, 64-72, 74-81, 83, 86, 90-2, 97,101, 106-7, 110-11, 116-18, 123-4, 128-9, 132-4, 141-2, 145, 148-62, 165-8, 173-78, 183-4, 192, 194, 201, 205, 201, 218, 221-4, 240-3, 248-9, 252-3, 256, 258-273, 275-6, 278-280, 289, 291, 294-6, and 300. These numbers may be found in part of the unlabeled videotapes in the collection. As with the reel-to-reel tapes, most of the videotapes are created by WUSF. The exceptions are 9 tapes from WTVT-13, Spectrum Productions, Inc., Video News Clip, Inc., and City of Tampa Televisions. Although these tapes are not from WUSF, they concern USF--ranging from the inauguration of President Genshaft to a commencement ceremony from 1997. Wood Home Town – Dade City, Florida Grade level- 6th From Juan Ponce de Leon's arrival in 1513 to Pitbull's performances on stage today, Hispanic-Americans have long had a powerful influence on the shaping of Florida. When it comes to culture and community , there are few that have had a greater impact than Vicente Martinez Ybor. Born September 7, 1818 in Spain, Ybor was sent to Cuba by his at the age of 14. Once in Cuba, Ybor worked as a clerk at a grocery store and then as a cigar broker before manufacturing his own brand of cigars.In 1869, after the start of the Cuban Ten Year War (1868-1878), Ybor moved his cigar manufacturing to the United States, and opened a factory in Key West bringing other owners and employees to the island city. By 1880, Key West was the largest and richest city in Florida due to the cigar factories. Eventually, labor and transportation problems caused production to slow down and Ybor to look for an alternative location for his factories. At the advice of a friend, Ybor ended up moving to a small fishing village in Florida known as Tampa Town. Beginning in 1885 with forty acres, Ybor began making his mark on the Tampa area, not only constructing factories, but sawmills, houses, restaurants, hotels, saloons, grocery stores, real estate and mortgage companies, barber shops, and other venues necessary to everyday life, eventually establishing a brand new town known as Ybor City.

Tampa has sharks and rays at the Florida Aquarium and the more lovable manatees at the zoo. At Busch Gardens, you can ride across re-created African plains in a safari truck, stopping to hand-feed roaming giraffes. Or you can go to sea on a fishing charter and try to catch your own wildlife. In Ybor City, the historic Cuban neighborhood, you can amble down brick streets, following your nose to bakeries to buy fragrant loaves of Cuban bread or to shops where tabaqueros hand-roll fine cigars. Lively Spanish conversation might lead you to an old- fashioned domino parlor where grandfathers with gnarled hands gather to play in friendly neighborhood matches. Antiques shops, boutiques and art galleries beckon. After dark, the nightclubs throw open their doors, and Ybor City metamorphoses into a hip nightlife spot. St. Pete (the local name for St. Petersburg, Florida) is only a 30-minute drive away, and the gorgeous Gulf Coast beaches are about a 45-minute drive.     Appendix “K” HISTORIC PRESERVATION CHALLENGE GRANT PAST AWARDS 2012 HERITAGE TOURISM PROJECT ALLOCATIONS 2012 FIRST ROUND Grantee: American Institute of Architects (AIA) Project: “Past Forward Tampa Bay/Tampa Bay Times in Education” Award: $10,000 Status: Completed The allocation was for the production of Past Forward Tampa Bay, a newspaper insert distributed to all eighth grade students at Hillsborough County schools (approximate circulation 16,300); inserted into all Hillsborough County home delivery and single copy (retail) copies of the Tampa Bay Times on a Sunday (approximate circulation 115,000); inserted into all Hillsborough County copies of tbt* on a Friday (approximate circulation 68,000); and distributed via partner organizations throughout Hillsborough County during the Republican National Convention (RNC). Copies of the publication were distributed to visitor bureaus and AIA Florida chapters throughout the state after the RNC. The County was recognized in the publication for its support. Grantee: Friends of Henry B. Plant Park Project: “Plant Park Cell Phone Tour” Award: $10,000 Status: Completed The allocation was for the development of a cell phone tour through Plant Park, which linked the Park, H.B. Plant Museum and the University of Tampa. A QR code for each stop on the walk was installed on architecturally designed stones placed in the gardens.
