CBC/Radio-Canada: Canada’s Public Space Where we’re going At CBC/Radio-Canada, we have been transforming the way we engage with Canadians. In June 2014, we launched Strategy 2020: A Space for Us All, a plan to make the public broadcaster more local, more digital, and financially sustainable. We’ve come a long way since then, and Canadians are seeing the difference. Many are engaging with us, and with each other, in ways they could not have imagined a few years ago. Our connection with the people we serve can be more personal, more relevant, more vibrant. Our commitment to Canadians is that by 2020, CBC/Radio-Canada will be Canada’s public space where these conversations live. Digital is here Last October 19, Canadians showed us that their future is already digital. On that election night, almost 9 million Canadians followed the election results on our CBC.ca and Radio-Canada.ca digital sites. More precisely, they engaged with us and with each other, posting comments, tweeting our content, holding digital conversations. CBC/Radio-Canada already reaches more than 50% of all online millennials in Canada every month. We must move fast enough to stay relevant to them, while making sure we don’t leave behind those Canadians who depend on our traditional services. It’s a challenge every public broadcaster in the world is facing, and CBC/Radio-Canada is further ahead than many. Our Goal The goal of our strategy is to double our digital reach so that 18 million Canadians, one out of two, will be using our digital services each month by 2020. -

The audio book, produced by Jody Colero for Silent Joe Inc., is unabridged, with a running time of 15 hours, 45 minutes. Upon publication, The Book of Negroes was met with critical acclaim and was soon awarded the prestigious Rogers Writers’ Trust Fiction Prize and the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize for Overall Best Book. The Book of Negroes then went on to win Canada Reads and has been published around the world. In January 2015, it was adapted as an award-winning miniseries that aired on CBC Television. Lawrence Hill says, “I am so delighted that HarperCollins has released an audio version of The Book of Negroes. Many readers have asked for an audio version, and I hope this offers much pleasure to those who love to listen to books.” The Book of Negroes audio edition will be available for download on August 16, 2016. About the Author
Lawrence Hill: About the Author Hill is the author of ten books of fiction and non-fiction. In 2005, he won his first Writing literary honour: a National Magazine Award for the article “Is Africa’s Pain Black America’s Burden?” published in The Walrus. His first two novels were Some Great Thing and Any Known Blood, and his first non-fiction work to attract national attention was the memoir Black Berry, Sweet Juice: On Being Black and White in Canada. But it was his third novel, The Book of Negroes (HarperCollins Canada, 2007) — published in some countries as Someone Knows My Name and in French as Aminata — that attracted widespread attention in Canada and other countries. Lawrence Hill’s non-fiction book, Blood: The Stuff of Life was published in September 2013 by House of Anansi Press. Blood is a personal consideration of the physical, social, cultural and psychological aspects of blood, and how it defines, unites and divides us. Hill drew from the book to deliver the 2013 Massey Lectures across Canada. In 2013, Hill published the essay Dear Sir, I Intend to Burn Your Book: An Anatomy of a Book Burning (University of Alberta Press). His fourth novel, The Illegal, was published by HarperCollins Canada in 2015 and by WW Norton in the USA in 2016. Hill is currently writing a new novel and a children’s book, and is a professor of creative writing at the University of Guelph, in Ontario. Personal Lawrence Hill is the son of American immigrants — a black father and a white mother — who came to Canada the day after they married in 1953 in Washington, D.C. -

Perhaps we should be asking how they are reading them. David Finkelstein and Alistair McCleery, An Introduction to Book History Why does the idea of celebrities championing Canadian literature on CBC radio and television make academics laugh? During the lively discussions at the “TransCanada” conference in June , almost everyone giggled when Barbara Godard pointed out that the CBC chose pop stars rather than academics to appear on CBC Radio One’s “Canada Reads” series. Now, this reaction may have been a brief outburst of conference-induced mass hysteria, but it was also an intriguing moment. What was so funny? Was it the idea that Canada has produced celebrities? Was it the juxtaposed image of pop star (connoting popular, media-savvy, access to a mass audience) and Canadian literature that provoked amuse- ment? Did the laughter indicate concern about a “watered-down” literary critique aired on radio by “unqualified” readers? How much professional anxiety about the impact of our role as teachers and thinkers on the world outside the university campus prompted our laughter? Or, was this the laughter of dismissal and the rejection of a popular program format? Mass reading events such as “Canada Reads” and “One Book, One Community” programs have certainly attracted criticism for their vulgariza- tion of a cultural practice (literary interpretation) and their pandering to “the prizes and showbiz mentality” that has “infiltrated” Canadian literary culture (Henighan ). -

Reflecting their culture, their songs carried messages of personal and political significance. But their music is of technical as well as of social interest. Like classical art song, it often highlights lyrical meaning with various sorts of metric irregularities. In this dissertation, I closely analyze twenty-seven songs by Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Joni Mitchell, and Cat Stevens, in order to characterize the metric style of their songwriting and demonstrate their use of meter as an expressive device. To describe meter in this music requires theories more flexible than those usually applied to groove-based music. The analyses in this dissertation draw not only from theories of meter as a hierarchy of beat streams, but also upon theories of metrical process and prosody, in order to create transcriptions, to describe precisely listeners' sensations of meter, and to propose expressive rationales for metric settings. As an introduction to the style and the theoretical issues, Chapter 1 considers the problems of conceiving of meter in the expressively timed context of Mitchell’s “The Fiddle and the Drum.” Chapter 2 examines the existing methods for analyzing meter in music and poetry, in order to find some productive ways to analyze this metrically fluctuant repertoire. -

“True Stories,” Real Lives: Canada Reads 2012 and the Effects of Reading Memoir in Public Danielle Fuller and Julie Rak or the 2012 instalment of the competitive reading radio show Canada Reads,1 the producers decided to feature what they called “true stories,” with the winner declared as the non-fictional work Fthat all Canadians should read. This was the first year of Canada Reads to feature a theme and the first to focus on non-fiction. However, the producers’ decision to switch from fiction to non-fiction had sever- al unforeseen effects in both the show and the public realm. When celebrity advocate Anne-France Goldwater said on the show’s first day that Marina Nemat’s Prisoner of Tehran was untrue and then accused Carmen Aguirre of being a terrorist, Canada Reads abruptly stopped being a game show about nationalist forms of reading and became the focus of a serious discussion about memoir, nationalism, and ethics. Goldwater’s connection of the work of memoir with the lives and ideas of the authors, a common effect of memoir as a genre, echoed throughout the rest of Canada Reads 2012. In this essay, we propose that the prominence of the memoir on Canada Reads 2012 created a series of effects on the show and among the public that disrupted the usual “show business” of the program as public entertainment and eco- nomic catalyst, helping to create a controversy during the series itself. Carmen Aguirre, whose memoir won the contest in 2012, notes in the afterword to the 2014 edition of Something Fierce that, in addition to benefiting in terms of media exposure, book sales, and new opportun- ities to promote her book in person across Canada, the effects of the controversy included heightened public exposure and threats to her own safety. -
CBC/Radio-Canada Needs More Funding and True Independence: CMG Proposals
CBC/Radio-Canada needs more funding and true independence: CMG proposals The cuts to CBC this year alone amount to one of the biggest layoffs of content creators and journalists in Canadian history. This must be stopped and the longer-term trend at CBC reversed so that our public broadcaster can continue to produce local and national programming on all platforms that is in the public interest. The reckless dismantling of a major cultural resource in a vast, diverse country like ours – next to the U.S. powerhouse with its big commercial broadcasters – is one of the issues people in communities across Canada are seriously concerned about. Here is what CMG is urging all of Canada’s federal political parties to do to reverse the damage: 1. Reverse the $115-million Deficit Reduction Action Plan (DRAP) cut to CBC 2. Increase CBC funding to about half the average of what other developed countries invest in their public broadcaster or $43.5 per capita annually over the next five years, and adjust CBC's parliamentary appropriation for inflation. 3. Ask the CRTC to establish a fund that is dedicated to public service media programming (CBC, TVO, APTN, Tfo, community and independent media) – including local news – on all platforms that meets the diverse and evolving programming needs of Canadians. 4. Repeal Clause 17 of omnibus budget bill C-60 – in the interest of our country and of our reputation as a mature democracy – to remove government’s interference in CBC’s day-to-day operations. 5. Protect CBC/Radio-Canada’s independence by instituting a more public mechanism for selecting the national public broadcaster’s Board and CEO.
