KWAME NKRUMAH, HIS AFRO-AMERICAN NETWORK AND THE PURSUIT OF AN AFRICAN PERSONALITY EMMANUELLA AMOH 105 Pages This thesis explores the pursuit of a new African personality in post-colonial Ghana by President Nkrumah and his African American network. I argue that Nkrumah’s engagement with African Americans in the pursuit of an African Personality transformed diaspora relations with Africa. It also seeks to explore Black women in this transnational history. Women are not perceived to be as mobile as men in transnationalism thereby underscoring their inputs in the construction of certain historical events. But through examining the lived experiences of Shirley Graham Du Bois and to an extent Maya Angelou and Pauli Murray in Ghana, the African American woman’s role in the building of Nkrumah’s Ghana will be explored in this thesis. -

Charisma and politics in post-colonial Africa Abstract This paper examines the interaction between charisma and politics in Africa. Two broad groups of charismatic political leaders are discussed: those who came to the fore during the era of independence struggles and saw themselves as an embodiment of their nation states and having a transformative impact over the societies they led, and those who emerged largely in response to the failure of the first group or the discontent of post-colonial delivery, and sought political power to enhance their own personal interests. In both instances, the leaders emerged in a context of a crisis: the collapse of colonialism, the disintegration of the one-party state model and economic collapse. The identity need of a State is reflected in its assertion of its nation-ness. The State therefore is always in the quest for a nation. The State in South Africa, in its Apartheid and Post-Apartheid variants, has sought allegiance to different identity markers in its ‘quest for nation’. Even though spatially located in Africa, the Apartheid regime had consciously situated itself ideologically, temporally and dispositionally in the western, white world. Against this, post-Apartheid South Africa could only come into being through a negation of what Apartheid South Africa stood for. Its new identity had a clearly defined ‘other’ in this case. The presence of a well-defined ‘other’ however does not guarantee a singular narrative of ‘self’. The ‘self’ if only defined against the ‘other’ remains only a negative identity category. However, as movements like Negritude, African Humanism, Black Consciousness would attest, the ‘self’ always becomes more than just a reaction to the ‘other’. It takes up positive forms. So negritude is just not about a negro, but about a new attitude. -

Radical Pan-Africanism and Africa’s Integration: A Retrospective Exploration and Prospective Prognosis Adeniyi S. Basiru, Mashud L.A. Salawu, and Adewale Adepoju Abstract The recent clamor by some African leaders for an integrated Africa, anchored on the notion of a quasi-federal government as champi- oned by Kwame Nkrumah and other radical Pan-Africanists in the early 1960s, has revived an issue that many thought had been buried at the 1963 Addis Ababa conference. It has also placed the radi- cal variant of Pan-Africanism on the discursive radar. Against this background, this article adopts descriptive, historical, and analytical methods to retrospectively examine and to provide a prospective prognosis on the place of radical Pan-Africanism in the African integration project. In it, we show that many agential and structural factors have frustrated and continue to frustrate attempts to achieve the supranational African community promoted by radical Pan- Africanists. We argue that these factors cannot be divorced from the nature of post-colonial African states, which offer opportunities to ruling elites that a supranational environment cannot. Barume1 [email protected] Abstract: Building Africa’s development on its values and assets is a long time-taken option. The founders of the African Union and those who later adopted the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights in 1981, had in mind an African continent that would build on its human and natural resources, cultural values and institutions in order to make it a prosperous and fulfilling Continent for its peoples. Africa was expected to take its destiny into its own hands, redress colonial legacies and rebuild on its comparative advantages, including cultural diversity. This paper highlights efforts that are underway at both regional and national levels, to reinstate African traditional values in its development underscoring the Works of African Commission on Human’s and Peoples’ Rights on indigenous peoples as a key example of how the Continent is endeavoring to put peoples and communities at the center of its rights- based development. The opinions expressed and arguments employed herein are solely those of the authors and do not necessarily reflect the official views of the PROLAW program.
