Kurzfassung Das Begriffsfeld wurde revidiert, das Phänomen der vom Menschen eingeschleppten Tiere in den allgemeinen Zusammenhang der Faunengeschichte eingefügt. Eine erste kohärente Übersicht der Neozoen in Deutschland wurde erarbeitet. Eine Datenbank mit Angaben zu 1322 Neozoen wurde erstellt. Von diesen sind bereits 262 etabliert (Agriozoen). Die Bestandserhebung ist damit noch nicht abgeschlossen. Es erfolgen Angaben über Status, Herkunft und Einschleppung, Erstnachweis, weitere Ausbreitung, Literatur. An einigen Arten der Gänse (Anatidae) wurden exemplarisch Untersuchungen durchgeführt zu Verbreitung, Populationsdynamik, Populationsgenetik, Hybridisierung mit anderen Arten, Konkurrenzverhalten. Die Neozoen üben einen erheblichen Einfluss aus, allgemein durch ihre große Artenzahl und weite Verbreitung, andererseits durch die spezifische Wirkung einzelner Arten. Dies betrifft Nutzung, besonders aber wirtschaftliche und medizinische Schäden oder Schadenspotentiale. Der Einfluss auf Ökosystem und Biodiversität ist je nach Art und dem untersuchten Lebensraum sehr verschieden. Daher sind in verstärktem Maße Einzelfallstudien erforderlich. Eine Prognose über die nächsten Einschleppungen, ihren Erfolg und ihre Auswirkungen ist nicht möglich. Darin gleichen die Neozoen ggf. ins Freiland verbrachten genetisch verämderten Organismen. Daher sollte die weitere Einbringung von Neozoen soweit wie möglich verhindert, wenn nötig eindämmende Maßnahmen ergriffen werden; die gesetzlichen Bestimmungen harmonisiert werden; Öffentlichkeitsarbeit verstärkt, jedoch ohne Übertreibungen, auf die Folgen hingewiesen werden; die Datenbasis auf neuestem Stand gehalten werden; die Einführungsfolgenforschung (Umweltverträglichkeitsprüfung) und das Monitoring gestärkt werden. Vorgeschlagen wird eine zentrale Koordination der vielfältigen Bereiche und Kompetenzen in Deutschland. 17. Abstract The terminology was revised, the phenomenon of animals displaced by man was discussed on the background of general faunal history. A first consistent survey of neozoans (alien species) in Germany is given. A databank developed in the framework of this project contains 1322 neozoans, 262 being already established (agriozoans). The final number most likely will be higher. Information is presented on status, origin and mode of import, first record, further spreading, literature. Selected species of geese (Anatidae) were investigated concerning distribution, population dynamics, population genetics, hybrids, competitive behaviour. In general Neozoans have a considerable influence by their great number and wide distribution, and in special cases by the impact of single species. This refers to the use of neozoans on one hand but mainly refers to economic and medical risks. Depending on species and habitats taken into consideration the influence on ecosystems and biodiversity can be strikingly different. This makes it necessary to focus on single case studies. A prognosis about the next successful arrivals and their consequences is not possible. In this respect neozoans resemble accidentally escaped genetically modified organisms. Therefore further import of neozoans should be stopped or minimised, agriozoans should be contained; legal regulations must be harmonised; public awareness should be focussed on potential risks without exaggerations; the database should be constantly actualised; impact assessment for potential animal introductions and monitoring should be strengthened. There are subjective differences, as well as morphological differences. Immature cockroaches are known as nymphs. Nymphs closely resemble adults except nymphs are generally smaller and lack wings and genital openings or copulatory appendages at the tip of their abdomen. Many species, however, have wingless adult females. Nymphs of these may be recognized by their shorter, relatively broad cerci and lack of external genitalia. Male cockroaches possess styli in addition to paired cerci. Styli arise from the subgenital plate and are generally con- spicuous, but may also be reduced in some species. Styli are absent in adult females and nymphs.

Cockroaches Introduction Members of the order Blattodea, there are about 4,500 species of cockroach, which live in a wide range of environments around the world. Although considered pests associated with disease, there are only about 30 species that are commonly found in proximity with humans and, of these, only four are considered serious pests. Cockroaches are mainly nocturnal and will normally try to avoid light. Although most species prefer warm climates, cockroaches are among the hardiest insects and can survive extremes at both end of the temperature scale. Some species are capable of remaining active for a month without food and are able to survive on very limited sustenance. They are omnivorous, feeding on organic materials, including decaying plant matter, but they will also eat dead insects and animals. Compared to crickets, cockroaches have some advantages as feeder insects. They are unlikely to attack a small chameleon in the same way that a cricket might. They are longer lived and are hardier. Most are easier to breed than crickets and they make no noise! Unfortunately, despite these advantages, they are not as readily accepted by some animals as crickets are. Cockroaches suffer from a perception they harbour disease and that they smell. The species shown below will not do so if kept in clean conditions and fed correctly. For mantis, cockroaches can be a better choice than crickets.

These publications form the three research chapters of this thesis in accordance with The University of Sydney’s policy for doctoral theses. These chapters are linked by the use of the latest phylogenetic and molecular evolutionary techniques for analysing obligate mutualistic endosymbionts and their host mitochondrial genomes to shed light on the evolutionary history of the two partners. Therefore, there is inevitably some repetition between chapters, as they share common themes. In the general introduction and discussion, I use the singular “I” as I am the sole author of these chapters. All other chapters are co-authored and therefore the plural “we” is used, including appendices belonging to these chapters. My role was in the paper was to sequence samples, assemble mitochondrial genomes, perform phylogenetic analyses, and contribute to the writing of the manuscript.

We analysed the phylogeny of Blaberoidea using four mitochondrial and three nuclear genes from 99 blaberoid taxa. Blaberoidea (excl. Anaplectidae) and Blaberidae were recovered as monophyletic, but Ectobiidae was not; Attaphilinae is deeply subordinate in Blattellinae and herein abandoned. Our results, together with those from other recent phylogenetic studies, show that the structuring of Blaberoidea in Blaberidae, Pseudophyllodromiidae stat. rev., Ectobiidae stat. rev., Blattellidae stat. rev., and Nyctiboridae stat. rev. (with “ectobiid” subfamilies raised to family rank) represents a sound basis for further development of Blaberoidea systematics.

Hebert2 1 Entomology Department, Zoological Collection of the State of Bavaria, Munich, Germany, 2 Biodiversity Institute of Ontario, University of Guelph, Guelph, Canada Abstract Background: The State of Bavaria is involved in a research program that will lead to the construction of a DNA barcode library for all animal species within its territorial boundaries. The present study provides a comprehensive DNA barcode library for the Geometridae, one of the most diverse of insect families. Methodology/Principal Findings: This study reports DNA barcodes for 400 Bavarian geometrid species, 98 per cent of the known fauna, and approximately one per cent of all Bavarian animal species. Although 98.5% of these species possess diagnostic barcode sequences in Bavaria, records from neighbouring countries suggest that species-level resolution may be compromised in up to 3.5% of cases. All taxa which apparently share barcodes are discussed in detail. One case of modest divergence (1.4%) revealed a species overlooked by the current taxonomic system: Eupithecia goossensiata Mabille, 1869 stat.n. is raised from synonymy with Eupithecia absinthiata (Clerck, 1759) to species rank. Deep intraspecific sequence divergences (.2%) were detected in 20 traditionally recognized species. Conclusions/Significance: The study emphasizes the effectiveness of DNA barcoding as a tool for monitoring biodiversity. Open access is provided to a data set that includes records for 1,395 geometrid specimens (331 species) from Bavaria, with 69 additional species from neighbouring regions. Taxa with deep intraspecific sequence divergences are undergoing more detailed analysis to ascertain if they represent cases of cryptic diversity.

These are now included. Papers from previous years will always have to be included in the current list; late publication dates of journals and the necessity for the early preparation for publication of this list, makes this inevitable. We are trying tho make the Bibliography as complete as possible, However, more recorders are necessary. It will be seen from the list of recorders, that we still have no representatives from some countries. We have no formal recorder for France.     Characters for Identifying Common Families of Blattodea1 (not including termites) Cryptocercidae and Blaberidae have NO spines on the posteroventral margins of the middle and hind femora. These roaches do not occur in Minnesota, but are none-the- less interesting. Cryptocercidae - Brown-hooded cockroaches. Wings completely absent in adults and nymphs; sides of body nearly parallel-giving a more elongate appearance; 7th abdominal tergum and 6th sternum extend over tip of abdomen (hiding the cerci); sub- social, lives in colonies in rotting logs. The common, Cryptocercus punctulatus, along with other species in the genus, is found in the mountains of the eastern US; other species occur in the Pacific Northwest and in China. They are wingless and live communally in rotting logs, especially oak, and are able to ingest wood with the aid of symbiotic flagellates. Blaberidae - Giant cockroaches and relatives. Tip of abdomen not covered by preceding abdominal sclerites; usually with wings. Usually large species (> 15 mm or much larger) or smaller and pale green. Not sub-social, solitary These are roaches of the Deep South and tropical areas, including the Surinam roach, Pycnoscelus surinamensis, the giant cockroach, Blaberus discoidalis, and the green banana roach, Panchlora nivea. 1 Characters from Bland and Jaques (1978); photographs from Univ. Nebraska & BugGuide.net !1 Ectobiidae (=Blattellidae)2 and Blattidae have numerous spines on the posteroventral margins of the middle and hind femora. These roaches do occur in Minnesota. Ectobiidae (=Blattellidae) (in part) - Parcoblatta. Front femur with row of stout spines on posteroventral margin and with shorter and more slender spines basally (in other words, the spines are in 2 distinct size groups).
