Changes in vegetation structure can alter the physical habitat structure, thermal environment, and food available to arthropods, which play an important role in the structure and functioning of Arctic ecosystems. Not only do they provide key ecosystem services such as pollination and nutrient cycling, they are an essential food source for migratory birds. In this study I examined the relationships between the abundance, diversity, and community composition of arthropods and the height and cover of several shrub species across a tundra-shrub gradient in northwestern Alaska. To characterize nestling diet of common passerines that occupy this gradient, I used next-generation sequencing of fecal matter. Willow cover was strongly and consistently associated with abundance and biomass of arthropods and significant shifts in arthropod community composition and diversity. -

COKENDOLPHER AND FRANK D. BRYCE The Wichita Mountains are located in eastern Greer, southern Kiowa, and northwestern Comanche counties in Oklahoma. Since their formation more than 300 million years ago, these rugged mountains have been fragmented and weathered, until today the highest peak (Mount Pinchot) stands only 756 meters above sea level (Tyler, 1977). The mountains are composed predominantly of granite and gabbro. Forests of oak, elm, and walnut border most waterways, while at elevations from 153 to 427 meters prair ies are the predominant vegetation type. A more detailed sum mary of the climatic and biotic features of the Wichitas has been presented by Blair and Hubbell (1938). A large tract of land in the eastern range of the Wichita Moun tains (now northeastern Comanche County) was set aside as the Wichita National Forest by President McKinley during 1901. In 1905, President Theodore Roosevelt created a game preserve on those lands managed by the Forest Service. Since 1935, this pre serve has been known as the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge. Numerous papers on Oklahoma spiders have been published (Bailey and Chada, 1968; Bailey et al., 1968; Banks et al, 1932; Branson, 1958, 1959, 1966, 1968; Branson and Drew, 1972; Gro- thaus, 1968; Harrel, 1962, 1965; Horner, 1975; Rogers and Horner, 1977), but only a single, comprehensive work (Banks et al., 1932) exists covering all arachnid orders in the state. In a survey investigating the spider fauna of Dargaz and Kalat counties in Razavi Khorasan Province of Iran, 13 families and 21 species were recognized, of which three are new to Iran: Minosia simeonica Levy, 1995, Nomisia negebensis Levy, 1995 and Thanatus atratus Simon, 1875. Also, genus Minosia Dalmas, 1921 is recorded for the first time in Iran. Data on collection localities and distribution of each species, as well as diagnostic morphological characters and figures for the newly recorded taxa are provided. Key words: new records, Thanatus, Minosia, Nomisia, Iran. Introduction Spiders (Araneae), with over 45000 recognized species in the world (World Spider Catalog 2015). Reviewing the literature, Zamani et al. (2015a) gave a checklist of spiders of Iran with about 540 species. Considering the geographic position of the country as a land bridge joining the Palaearctic, Afro- tropical and Oriental zones, and its diverse climate condi- tions and the known spider fauna of adjacent countries, it seems that this number must be much higher than known at present. -

Research on the role of spiders as natural enemies within agroecosystems needs to address the distribution of their communities across different spatial scales, as well as the dominant species. 2 We studied the spatial distribution of the community of spiders of the olive agroecosys- tem in Northeastern Portugal and investigated potential species that could be used as bioindicators of agricultural management in the olive grove. 3 We found nine functional groups (ambushers, foliage runner hunters, ground hunters, orb-web builders, sheet web builders, sensing web-builders, space web builders, stalk- ers and wandering sheet/tangle weavers) encompassing a community that changed significantly across the horizontal and vertical gradient. 4 We propose Thanatus vulgaris Simon, 1870 as potential bioindicator for the ground of the olive grove central area and Ozyptila pauxilla (Simon, 1870) for the ground of the olive grove peripheral area. -

Abstract: In the present study, monthly and seasonal fluctuations of densities of terrestrial spiders were recorded in six different sites at Qena Governorate during the period of one year (February, 2012 - January, 2013). The study revealed the occurrence of 1247 specimens belonging to 14 families and including 23 species of order Araneae. Family Salticidae recorded the highest number during the whole period of study (278 specimens) while family Agelenidae recorded the lowest number in the same period of study (4 specimens). It was observed that the maximal number was collected from Thanatus albini (199 specimens), while Halodromus barbarae was the least species in number since only 2 specimens were collected. The densities of the recorded spiders varied seasonally and the general seasonal peak was recorded during autumn (363 specimens), while the lowest density was observed during winter (215 specimens). Regarding the sex ratio of the collected spiders from all sites, it was clear that there were 213 adult male specimens, whereas the adult females were represented by 440 specimens. -

Spiders are the seventh most diverse order of arthropods globally and are prominent predators in all prairie habitats. In this chapter, a checklist for the spiders of the Prairie Provinces (767 recorded species and 44 possible species) is presented along with an overview of all 26 families that occur in the region. Eighteen of the species from the region are adventive. Linyphiidae is by far the dominant family, representing 39% of all species in the three provinces. Gnaphosidae and Lycosidae each represent 8% and three other families (Salticidae, Dictynidae, and Theridiidae) each account for 7%. A summary of biodiversity studies conducted in the Prairies Ecozone and from transition ecoregions is also provided. The Mixed Grassland Ecoregion has the most distinctive assemblage; Schizocosa mccooki and Zelotes lasalanus are common only in this ecoregion. Other ecoregions appear to harbour less distinctive assemblages, but most have been poorly studied. Lack of professional opportunities for spider systematists in Canada remains a major barrier to the advancement of the taxonomy and ecology of spiders. Résumé.
