Scotch Malt Whisky Society Tour 26Th May – 4Thjune 2009 Scotch Malt Whisky Society Tour 26th May – 4thJune 2009 An exclusive tour to Scotland for members of the Scotch Malt Whisky Society escorted by Andrew Derbidge We have been waiting for a real whisky tour of Scotland for ages and here it is! I am happy to introduce a wee question and answers session with Stuart which helps to enhance our perspective on what's behind the amber-nectar which we all enjoy so much - could you introduce yourself to the whisky-fans ! • The story really starts when I left University back in 1979 (BSc in Chemical Engineering from Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh – seems like a lifetime ago (and is) and started working with a company in Fife who, amongst other things manufactured by- products plants for the whisky industry.

  • A Scotch Whisky Primer
ARDBEG Voted World’s Best Whisky 2008 & 2009 by Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible. This article was originally published online at www.nicks.com.au A Scotch Whisky Primer What is Scotch Whisky? Today, Scotch whisky is one of the world’s leading spirit drinks and also regarded by many as the world’s most ‘noble’ spirit. It is exported to about 200 different markets and frequently outsells every other spirit category. Made from the most elemental of ingredients, water and barley, it has become inextricably woven into the fabric of Scotland’s history, culture and customs. Indeed, there are few products which are so closely related to the land of their birth than ‘Scotch’. For Scots, it is the drink of welcome and of farewell, and much in between. With a dram babies are ushered into the world and guests to the house. In the days when distances were traveled only with difficulty, a jug of whisky was left out for any tradesmen who might call. Business deals were sealed with a dram. All manner of small ailments have been eased with whisky - from children’s teething, to colds and flu. Depart- ing guests were offered a deoch an doruis, the ‘dram at the door’ - in modern terms ‘one for the road’. The dead-departed are remembered and wished Godspeed with large quantities of whisky. As Charles Shields puts it: “...without an appreciation of whisky, I think a visitor to Scotland misses the true beauty of the country; whisky and Scotland are inseparably intertwined.” The word ‘whisky’ originates from the Scots Gaelic word “Uisge Beatha” meaning the ‘water of life’, Anglicised over time to ‘Whiskybae’ until finally being shorten to ‘Whisky’.

  • Scotland – Pitlochry
Scotland – Pitlochry Pitlochry is situated in the heart of the stunning scenery of Highland Perthshire. The town sits below Beinn Bhracaigh (Ben Vrackie), the speckled mountain and beside the River Tummel, in some of the most magnificent scenery in Scotland. With a backdrop of surrounding hills and beautiful woodlands, it is wonderful walking country. Famous as a holiday resort, rich in Victorian heritage, Pitlochry started life as a smaller neighbour to the older settlement of Moulin. Moulin is situated at the top of the hill and at the bottom of the “High Drive”, as the locals call it. From there roads led across the present-day Golf Course to Killiecrankie and Blair Atholl and down the hill to the ferry crossing at Port na Craig. The ferry was the only way at that time to cross the River Tummel and it was in operation until the footbridge was opened on Empire Day in 1912. The development of the town began in the 18th century, when General Wade’s Great North Road – built to allow military access to the Highlands- was routed through Pitlochry rather than Moulin. New inns were built to cater for travelers and the transformation of the town was completed by the arrival of the Highland Main Line Railway on June 1st 1863. Queen Victoria visited the area several times, following which it quickly developed into a popular holiday destination, famous visitors included William Ewart Gladstone, Professor J S Blackie and Robert Louis Stevenson. Pitlochry today is a bustling tourist town and has been welcoming visitors for over 170 years.
