The Institute, previously offered in Summer 2018, embodies the principles of the NEH Standing Together initiative through the use of two historic sites—the former U.S. aircraft carrier Intrepid, a National Historic Landmark, and the former U.S. submarine, Growler, a unique artifact that represents the technology and tensions of the Cold War. These historic sites, along with the oral histories of the men that served on these vessels, will provide a powerful starting point for examining the history and legacy of Cold War technology. The Cold War through the Collections of the Intrepid Museum will immerse teachers in scholarly historical research as well as the history, artifacts and oral histories in the Museum’s collection that embody the Cold War era. Integrating content exploring the historical context of technological innovation, the Institute will serve a national group of 25 high school history and science teachers in order to deepen their understanding and increase confidence in their ability to explore the subject thoroughly, critically and engagingly with their students. In 1609 Henry Hudson sailed the “Half Moon”, a Dutch ship into the harbor. The Dutch West India Company established a settlement in lower Manhattan, and named it New Amsterdam. In 1664 the English took over and renamed the colony New York. Some of the most notable historical sites are in reach of the hotel. Bowling Green, a triangular park established by the Dutch was the site of the purchase of Manhattan Island. It is the location of the Custom House which currently holds the National Museum of the American Indian. Battery Park is a 25 acre park at the tip of Manhattan, and is the site of many memorials. It was named for the artillery battery used in the American Revolutionary war. South Street Seaport and Museum, on Front street, was established by the Dutch West India Company. The area features some of the oldest architecture in the city. Pearl Street was created from Oyster Shells which were in abundance in the area of the seaport. The Brooklyn Bridge is the world’s first steel wire suspension bridge. Started in 1869 and completed fourteen yeare later in 1883, it connects the boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn. Wall Street marks the original boundary of the Dutch settlement. Fraunces Tavern Museum and Restaurant is located at 54 Pearl Street. In 1792 it was Headquarters for George Washington, and was the venue for peace negotiations with the British.

This $115 million project included demolishing and rebuilding Pier 86 where the Museum is based, dry-docking and repairing the 47,000-ton Intrepid, completely restoring the interior of the vessel, creating a brand new exhibit architecture, restoring many aircraft in the collection and acquiring several new aircraft and making substantial changes to the organization structure and managerial goals of Intrepid. This trip is dependent on several factors still, including fundraising, approvals, etc. A cadet fee for those that are merit listed to attend will apply. The set cost will be $200 per person. As a result, museums the world over have been forced to take measures to ensure their continued economic viability. This process of adaptation has been especially difficult for small museums, as these institutions often lack substantial missions, good locations, qualified staff, and clear exhibition and collections management policies. This thesis examines the one such institution, the New Jersey Naval Museum, as well as several case study institutions of similar mission scope, in order that workable solutions may be found that will assist small museum institutions in coping with the ever changing world economic climate. Included are analyses of scope, institution location, patterns of tourism, and institutional organization, as:- well as proposed ideas for fundraising and more efficient exhibit design.
