    THE UNRECOGNISED JAZZ ARTIST by Ian Muldoon* ________________________________________________________ 974 was a strange time and I was in a strange place, stationed at the remote RAAF Base Learmonth airfield adjacent to Exmouth Gulf, in North 1 West, Western Australia. To the east was one of one of the great desert landmasses on the planet. To the west, the magnificent heritage listed 260 km Ningaloo Reef fringing a tiny part of the 70 million square km Indian Ocean. It was a reminder of the littleness of the individual human. I was ensconced as part of an RAAF contingent of over 200 men busily extending the airstrip at RAAF Base Learmonth to accommodate larger aircraft. At Exmouth Gulf 250 mm of rain falls per annum, usually in a 24-hour window accompanied, thank you very much, by a cyclone. It was at this weird location, in the state of Western Australia where racism flourished and the good burghers of the State were agitating for secession from the “Communist" eastern states because WA was enjoying a mining boom and could pay their own way; a location befuddled by wealth and sunshine and hedonism, which didn’t need anything that the Eastern States had to offer; where I fell in love with the voice of Sydney vocalist Julie Amiet. Sydney vocalist Julie Amiet: she did an improvised vocalisation based on some Charlie Parker tune… _________________________________________________________ *Ian Muldoon has been a jazz enthusiast since, as a child, he heard his aunt play Fats Waller and Duke Ellington on the household piano. At around ten years of age he was given a windup record player and a modest supply of steel needles, on which he played his record collection, consisting of two 78s, one featuring Dizzy Gillespie and the other Fats Waller.

Rose-Steel Abstract This study performs a reading of Wittgenstein’s thought that integrates his sometimes sidelined remarks on aesthetics and belief, and emphasises consideration of language use on the level of practice. It analyses the many ways that Wittgenstein engages with the inexpressible or the limits of expression through comparison with poetry as a practice. The potential of a Wittgensteinian method of literary analysis concentrating on grammatical structures, exemplary forms of expression and quotidian meaning-making is shown by viewing several poets’ work in connection with specific forms of the inexpressible. This thesis consists of three parts. The first chapter surveys previous applications of Wittgenstein to aesthetic appreciation and analysis, and considers common interpretations of his earlier and later work. Incorporating a wide range of Wittgenstein sources allows a new reading to emerge that gives appropriate weight to his hitherto under-researched writings.

If it does, it's just beautiful—Lee Konitz2 INTRODUCTION The field of jazz scholarship has paid surprisingly little attention to the jazz practices, pedagogical methods, and lineal traditions associated with pianist and educator Lennie Tristano. On Tristano himself there exist only a handful of scholarly articles (Jago 2011, 2013, 2015) and two books (Ind 2005, Shim 2007).3 Even Paul Berliner’s landmark Thinking in Jazz (Berliner 1994), a volume concerned with the ways and means by which jazz is taught and learned does not devote space to an examination of Tristano, who was one of the first to engage in a methodological approach to jazz pedagogy.4 Tristano’s most famous students—tenor saxophonist Warne Marsh and alto saxophonist Lee Konitz—have also received little scholarly attention.
