The most diverse order was perciformes with 175 species, 100 genera and 43 families. The top four families with the highest number of species were gobidae (28 species), carangidae (23 species), engraulidae (15 species) and lutjanidae (14 species). Conservation status of all taxa includes one species as endangered, five species as vulnerable, 14 near threatened, 93 least concern and 16 data deficient. As numbers of commercial, sports, ornamental and cultivable fishes are high, commercial and recreational fishing could be organized. Seed production by selective breeding is recommended for aquaculture practices in estuarine areas of Tamil Nadu. Remarks: Although Polydactylus oligodon, originally described from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and Jamaica on the basis of 2 specimens, had long been regarded as a junior synonym of P. virginicus by many authors, Randall (1966) recognized the former as valid and designated a lectotype for the species. Randall (1966) noted differences between P. oligodon and P. virginicus in the shape of the posterior margin of the maxilla, and certain meristic characters (including numbers of lateral-line scales, pectoral-fin rays and anal-fin rays) and proportional measurements (including length of anal-fin base). In particular, the rounded shape of the posterior margin of the maxilla has been subsequently treated as a diagnostic character for P. oligodon (versus truncate to concave in P. virginicus) in many publications (e.g. Randall in Fischer, 1978; Cervigón in Cervigón et al., 1993; Randall, 1996). According to Feltes in Carpenter (2003) and confirmed by examination by the author, however, that character shows considerable individual variation and it is difficult to clearly distinguish between P. oligodon and P. virginicus on that basis. Although P. oligodon and P. virginicus are very similar to each other and distinction between the 2 species in recent literature is somewhat confused, P. oligodon can be distinguished from the latter by the higher counts of pored lateral-line scales [67 to 73 (mode 70) versus 54 to 63 (mode 58) in the latter]. Methodology: A total 151 samples of Eleutheronema sp. were collected from Malaysian coastal water. DNA was extracted from 25 mg caudal tissue and standard procedures were followed for COI gene amplification and sequencing. The sequences were then proceeded for the analysis of mitochondrial COI sequence by using MEGA 7. Results: A total of 20 haplotypes were found. Phylogenetic analysis identified two genealogical lineages; E. tetradactylum and E. rhadinum, respectively, harbouring 10 haplotypes each. The genetic distance range was 16%- 17%, thus supported the two lineages as distinct taxa. E. rhadinum lineage has been reported for the first time from Malaysian coastal water. -

It indicated that the fish mainly feeds on shrimps, fishes, and insects. The highest amount of shrimps (45.49%) was recorded in December and those of fishes (16.10%) during June and copepods and insects (7.31%) in July. The presence of a considerable amount of small fishes, insects and crustaceans in gut contents indicated carnivore-feeding habits of fish. Adult size of the species mainly feeds on shrimps and fishes whereas juveniles feed on shrimps, copepods, insects, and zoobenthos. Gastro-somatic index (GaSI) was maximum during March and April and minimum during June and December in fish. The monthly mean gonado-somatic index (GSI) values varied from 0.74 (December) to 1.32 (June) in males and 0.82 (December) to 5.44 (June) for female fish, respectively. Box 0001, LASU Post Office, Lagos, Nigeria 1Corresponding author’s e-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT The growth patterns, diet composition, and sex ratio of Giant African threadfin, Polydactylus quadrifilis (Cuvier, 1829) was investigated in Ologe lagoon in Nigeria to provide necessary baseline data toward the development of fisheries in Lagos lagoon system. A total of 180 individuals were caught from Ologe lagoon with gill and cast nets between October 2007 and September 2008. The fish measured between 90 and 490 mm Total length and weighed 8.5-950 g Body weight, respectively. The length-weight relationships were Log W = -4.96 + 2.92 Log TL (n = 83, r = 0.96) for males and Log W = 3.44+2.27 Log TL (n = 41, r = 0.88) for females. The growth exponential was near isometric for males (b = 2.92) and allometric for females (b = 2.27). Condition factor (K) of the fish ranged from 5.2 × 10-4 to 1.3 × 10-³ g/mm3 for males and 4.24 × 10-4 to 1.3 × 10-³ g/mm3 for females. 53.33% of the stomachs had foods, while 46.67% were empty. The species has piscivorous habit and carnivorous in nature. -

B. Siddik1* , Md Abu Hanif1, Ashfaqun Nahar2, Md Reaz Chaklader1 and Rowan Kleindienst3 Abstract Background: The Bay of Bengal coast, Bangladesh is a hotspot of fisheries abundance and diversity. A new species of Carangid family Alepes kleinii is recorded and described for the first time in the coastal waters of Bangladesh. Results: A total of 29 individuals of Alepes kleinii were collected from the surveyed areas between January to March, 2016. Validation of this species was confirmed by phenotypic characteristics including body and fins colour, shape, vertical stripes, number of fin rays etc. which were found to be identical to that of the Alepes kleinii described in existing literature. The regression parameter value (b = 2.81) of the length-weight relationship (W=aLb) indicates that the Bay of Bengal provides favourable environmental conditions for the growth and development of this species. Conclusion: The discovery of the razorbelly scad in these waters provide valuable information regarding species distribution and extension, location and habitat preference. This information is prerequisite for the sound management of the coastal fisheries of Bangladesh. David Johnson2 & Aléssio Datovo1 The most remarkable anatomical specialization of threadfns (Percomorphacea: Polynemidae) is the division of their pectoral fn into an upper, unmodifed fn and a lower portion with rays highly modifed into specialized flaments. Such flaments are usually elongate, free from interradial membrane, and move independently from the unmodifed fn to explore the environment. The evolution of the pectoral flaments involved several morphological modifcations herein detailed for the frst time. The posterior articular facet of the coracoid greatly expands anteroventrally during development. Similar expansions occur in pectoral radials 3 and 4, with the former usually acquiring indentations with the surrounding bones and losing association with both rays and flaments. Whereas most percomorphs typically have four or fve muscles serving the pectoral fn, adult polynemids have up to 11 independent divisions in the intrinsic pectoral musculature. The main adductor and abductor muscles masses of the pectoral system are completely divided into two muscle segments, each independently serving the pectoral-fn rays (dorsally) and the pectoral flaments (ventrally). Based on the innervation pattern and the discovery of terminal buds in the external surface of the flaments, we demonstrate for the frst time that the pectoral flaments of threadfns have both tactile and gustatory functions. Polynemids are easily identifable as a natural group based on their external morphology, particularly their dis- tinct pectoral fn divided into a dorsal part, with 12–19 sof rays united by an interradial membrane, and a ventral portion with around 3–16 isolated rays that are usually elongated, forming flaments with tactile functions1,2.
