Turiddu, whose mother Lucia keeps a tavern in their Sicilian village, was engaged to Lola. But when he left to join the army, Lola married the carter Alfio. Returning, --- Turiddu consoled himself by seducing Santuzza, only to abandon her and resume his . "' affair with Lola . As the opera begins, Turiddu is heard offstage singing a nocturnal serenade to Lola. He is supposed to have gone to a nearby town to fetch wine for the tavern, but has taken advantage ofAlfio's absence to spend the night with Lola. It is Easter Sunday. Santuzza comes to the tavern searching for Turiddu. Alfio follows, singing the praises of his itin -- - erant work and his faithful wife. The villagers proceed into church for the Easter Mass. Santuzza tells Mamma Lucia about Turiddu's rejection of her. When Turiddu himself appears, she reproaches him again and begs for his love. Lola, on her way to church, pauses to gloat. Turiddu angrily casts Santuzza aside; she curses him, and revenges herself by hinting to Alfio about his affair with Lola. Alfio vows not to pardon them. Leaving church, the villagers mill around the tavern, where Turiddu toasts them with a drinking song. He offers some wine to Alfio, who refuses it and challenges Turiddu to . - ... a duel. Turiddu admits his guilt and says he would gladly die if he were not responsible for Santuzza; bidding his mother farewell, he asks her to take care of the girl. Then he leaves to meet A lfio on the outskirts of the town. Santuzza rushes back and clings to •' ... ... - Mamma Lucia. A woman running on screams out the news: Alfio has killed Turiddu . • Ottorino Respighi, Musicista Geniale Ed Estroverso a 130 Anni Dalla Nascita

NOTES ON THE PROGRAM BY LAURIE SHULMAN, ©2017 2018 Winter Festival America, Inspiring: Respighi & Prokofiev ONE-MINUTE NOTES Chen Yi: Ge Xu (Antiphony). Chen Yi’s music fuses Chinese traditions with Western forms and instruments. Ge Xu is based on the antiphonal singing with which the Southern Chinese celebrate the Lunar New Year. The piece is about high spirits and hope. PROKOFIEV: Piano Concerto No. 3. Romanticism, classicism and modernism are finely balanced in Prokofiev’s dazzling Third Concerto. The second-movement variations, based on the Baroque gavotte, reveal his quirky melodic gift, while hisbiting humor surfaces in the finale. RESPIGHI: Pines of Rome and Fountains of Rome. Respighi’s famous tone poems are brilliant orchestral evocations of the Eternal City. Fountains evokes the interplay of water and light at various times of day. The more landscape-oriented Pines delves into imagined recollections of Rome’s glory days. The brass in the finale will raise the hairs on the back of your neck! CHEN YI: Ge Xu (Antiphony) CHEN YI Born: April 4, 1953 in Guangzhou, China. Currently resides in Kansas City, Missouri. Composed: 1993–94 World Premiere: January 28, 1995, in San Francisco NJSO Premiere: These are the NJSO premiere performances. Duration: 8 minutes As with other Chinese-American composers, Chen Yi’s life and philosophy were formed by China’s Cultural Revolution.

  • 1977, 1978 Conversations with Elsa Respighi
ADRIANO'S CONVERSATIONS WITH ELSA RESPIGHI Adriano with Elsa Respighi (Rome, May 23, 1979) Photo by Reto Gaugenrieder ADRIANO: I had made Elsa Respighi's acquaintance in 1977. This, my greatest friendship, with one of the most interesting women of musical Italy, lasted until Elsa's death in 1996. It embraced considerable correspondence and several personal visits to Elsa's house in Rome, and included an unforgettable Venetian holiday in 1978, preceding the Respighi Centenary for which I had conceived a comprehensive Respighi exhibition. This was held with great success, in conjunction with the International Lucerne Music Festival. Amongst various tape conversations with Elsa, I have transcribed and translated, from the Italian, two of the most important. They offer an interesting insight into a composer of which too little has been written over the fifty years after his death. Only his widow could talk with such authority about him. FIRST CONVERSATION (Rome, September 12th, 1977) ADRIANO: You are extremely busy preparing for the Respighi Centenary to be celebrated in 1979. What will be the most important celebratory events in Italy? ELSA: In Italy, many diverse programs are being prepared, both in the concert and the operatic domains. Casa Ricordi has issued a new catalogue of all available scores that also includes those works edited by other publishers, like Universal, Bote & Bock etc. A: Some of Respighi's operas will also be performed? E: I hope so. There is much interest in La campana sommersa, which has recently been broadcast by RAI. This opera will also find its way to some theatres.
