What is Hot Press and Cold Press Hot press has a very sm ooth finish with alm ost no tooth. Cold pressed has a texture that will fall between hot pressed and rough. Vellum Finish This is a slightly textured surface good for a variety of dry m edia. P late Finish Generally a finish that is very smooth and considered even smoother than a paper surface described as sm ooth.

What is the felt side? This is the top side of the pulp fiber being formed during the papermaking process. W hile the pulp is still w et, a pattern or texture for the finished sheet is created with felts.

Are both sides of the paper the same? There are generally 2 sides to a sheet of paper. The felt side described above and the wire side which is the side with the wire mesh that the pulp moves across during the papermaking process. The felt side is often more random and generally a preferred side. A difference in sides from a m achine m ade paper is often difficult to identify.

Which is the correct side of the paper to use? You can use either side of a sheet of paper.

What is grain direction? Fibers will align them selves in a sim ilar direction during the paperm aking process. This creates the grain. P aper will old more easily with the grain than against the grain. What is a deckle edge? This is the untrimmed, irregular edge of a handmade sheet of paper. There will be 2 deckle edges on a mould made machine. Deckle edges are created by tearing paper or with a stream of water during the paper making process.

What is neutral pH and acid free? The pH scale runs from 0 to 14. Neutral is 7. Paper is considered acid free when the pH level is above 7. Calcium carbonate is a buffing agent that is used to neutralize acidic elements that come into contact with the paper. Buffered paper will have a pH reading of 8.5 to 9.5. What is Archival? Archival is a measure in years that determines how long a paper will last until it begins to deteriorate. A rchival papers are often 100% cotton. Alpha cellulose papers are produced from pulp that has been processed more thoroughly and can meet the standards of permanence in ISO 9607.

What is ISO 9607? ISO is the International Organization for Standardization. This is the standard established for permanent papers of a conservation quality. The sheet must meet a variety of tests to be classified as a permanent sheet where longevity of several hundred years can be expected.

What is lignin? Lignin is the substance that binds cellulose fibers together in wood. Lignin left in the paper will break d own into a variety of different acids and greatly reduce the longevity of paper.

Is there a difference between cotton rag and cotton paper? The terms "rag" and "cotton" are often used interchangeably. However, rag specifically refers to papers made with cotton textile remnants. At one time, it was common for papers to consist of 100% cotton rag. Today, most fine art papers are made from 100% cotton linters or a combination of cotton rag and cotton linters. Rag fibers are longer fibers compared to cotton linters so they do provide extra strength. Cotton linters are pure cellulose fibers that are byproducts of cotton processing. Although the cotton linters' fibers are shorter than textiles, they still offer outstanding strength and archival properties. What is Alpha Cellulose? Alpha cellulose is wood pulp that has been further processed and is considered to have the same archival characteristics as cotton paper.
