Tech Notes, Fall 2010 Simple Non-Adhesive Methods for Conservation Mounting of Photographs By Jennifer McGlinchey Non-adhesive methods for mounting photographs and works on paper are often preferred because common adhesives (i.e. pressure sensitive tape, rubber cement, spray mount, glues and many other types, even when they are labeled “archival”) can cause damage. Over time, these adhesives can seep into the prints, discolor, and release acids that will stain, fade and damage a photograph. Even worse, most pressure sensitive adhesives will fail as the adhesive ages, and are not easily (or ever) removed from prints without causing damage. Even wheat starch paste and other water-based adhesives can cause distortion or damage to sensitive photographs. T he methods outlined in this article do require adhesives, but the adhesive never comes into contact with the artwork. Many of these methods support the corners or edges of the print with archival paper or inert plastic, so only the constructed supports require adhesives to secure them beneath a window mat. Below are a few examples of some of the many techniques that can be used for mounting photographs in a window mat for exhibition or storage. Window mats made from archival mat board (4-ply or thicker) are useful for storage and exhibition because they keep the photograph from coming into direct contact with glazing or other materials. Considerations for mounting photographs Evaluate each photograph and employ mounting methods that will provide adequate support for the size and weight of the print. T he methods outlined in this article can be used for many types of photographs, but may not be adequate for large format prints (larger than 20x24 inches), light-weight prints (such as unmounted albumen prints), prints that are damaged, torn, or mounted. -

In the recent past, many researchers have highlighted the development of in-house filaments for fused filament fabrication (FFF), which can extend the corresponding field of application. Due to the limited mechanical properties and deficient functionality of printed polymer parts, there is a need to develop printable polymer composites that exhibit high performance. This study analyses the actual mechanical characteristics of parts fabricated with a low-cost printer from a carbon fibre-reinforced nylon filament. The results show that the obtained values differ considerably from the values presented in the datasheets of various filament suppliers. Moreover, the hardness and tensile strength are influenced by the building direction, the infill percentage, and the thermal stresses, whereas the resilience is affected only by the building direction. Furthermore, the relationship between the mechanical properties and the filling factor is not linear. -

Global Production of Second Generation Biofuels: Trends and Influences Executive Summary For more than a century, fossil fuels have been the primary source of a wide array of products including fuels, lubricants, chemicals, waxes, pharmaceuticals and asphalt. In recent decades, questions about the impacts of fossil fuel reliance have led to research into alternative feedstocks for the sustainable production of those products, and liquid fuels in particular. A key objective has been to use feedstocks from renewable sources to produce biofuels that can be blended with petroleum-based fuels, combusted in existing internal combustion or flexible fuel engines, and distributed through existing infrastructure. Given that electricity can power short-distance vehicle travel, particular attention has been directed toward bio-derived jet fuel and fuels used in long distance transport. This report summarizes the growth of second-generation biofuel facilities since Dovetail’s 2009 report1 and some of the policies that drive that growth. It also briefly discusses biofuel mandates and second-generation biorefinery development in various world regions. Second generation biorefineries are operating in all regions of the world (Figure 1), bringing far more favorable energy balances to biofuels production than have been previously realized. Substantial displacement of a significant portion of fossil-based liquid fuels has been demonstrated to be a realistic possibility. However, in the face of low petroleum prices, continuing policy support and investment in research and development will be needed to allow biofuels to reach their full potential. -

Sequencing of the mt genome of kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus) is essential for elucidating its evolutionary characteristics. In the present study, single- molecule real-time sequencing technology (SMRT) was used to sequence the complete mt genome of kenaf. Results showed that the complete kenaf mt genome was 569,915 bp long and consisted of 62 genes, including 36 protein-coding, 3 rRNA and 23 tRNA genes. Twenty-fve introns were found among nine of the 36 protein-coding genes, and fve introns were trans-spliced. A comparative analysis with other plant mt genomes showed that four syntenic gene clusters were conserved in all plant mtDNAs. Fifteen chloroplast-derived fragments were strongly associated with mt genes, including the intact sequences of the chloroplast genes psaA, ndhB and rps7. According to the plant mt genome evolution analysis, some ribosomal protein genes and succinate dehydrogenase genes were frequently lost during the evolution of angiosperms. Our data suggest that the kenaf mt genome retained evolutionarily conserved characteristics. Overall, the complete sequencing of the kenaf mt genome provides additional information and enhances our better understanding of mt genomic evolution across angiosperms. -

Effect of a New Continuous Production Technology of Ramie (Boehmeria Nivea) on Fiber Yield and Fineness

Gaud) cultivation industry, the feasibility of a new harvesting mode was investigated. This allows a continuous supply of ramie within a growing season and provided theoretical and technical support for industrialized production of ramie. Huazhu 4 was used and harvesting times were within 28 May to 21 October 7 days interval. Five harvesting modes were designed with 3 replications, with traditional harvesting mode as the control. The results showed that the range in fiber fineness among the five harvesting modes was 1659–1958 m/g. The mean in mode 1 was the highest of the five modes (1958 m/g) and was 6.47% higher than in controls. Compared to controls, the average fiber fineness in mode 5 was 1.96% higher, and that of mode 4 was the same as the controls. However, modes 2 and 3 had 9.79 and 5.55% lower mean fiber fineness compared with controls, respectively. The harvested yields of raw fiber in modes 2 and 3 were 21.50 and 5.04%, respectively higher than controls - with no increases in other modes.
