A POET’S REQUEST: TEXT AND SUBTEXT IN HORACE’S ODES 1.1 A Thesis submitted to the Graduate College of Marshall University In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Latin by Virginia C. Cook Approved by Dr. Caroline A. Perkins, Ph.D., Committee Chairperson Dr. Christina E. Franzen, Ph.D. Dr. E. Del Chrol, Ph.D. Marshall University May 2011 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS The idea of writing a thesis is much easier than the actual process. Nothing puts it into perspective quite like the act of starting. It is only when you attempt to depict your abstract ideas in a physical form, such as on paper, that you realize to what extent they do not make sense. I have learned countless times over that the writing process can be one of fickleness and flight.
