Leading recvery Annual Report 2019–2020 TARONGA ANNUAL REPORT 2019–2020 A SHARED FUTURE WILDLIFE AND PEPLE At Taronga we believe that together we can find a better and more sustainable way for wildlife and people to share this planet. Taronga recognises that the planet’s biodiversity and ecosystems are the life support systems for our own species' health and prosperity. At no time in history has this been more evident, with drought, bushfires, climate change, global pandemics, habitat destruction, ocean acidification and many other crises threatening natural systems and our own future. Whilst we cannot tackle these challenges alone, Taronga is acting now and working to save species, sustain robust ecosystems, provide experiences and create learning opportunities so that we act together. We believe that all of us have a responsibility to protect the world’s precious wildlife, not just for us in our lifetimes, but for generations into the future. Our Zoos create experiences that delight and inspire lasting connections between people and wildlife. We aim to create conservation advocates that value wildlife, speak up for nature and take action to help create a future where both people and wildlife thrive. Our conservation breeding programs for threatened and priority wildlife help a myriad of species, with our program for 11 Legacy Species representing an increased commitment to six Australian and five Sumatran species at risk of extinction. The Koala was added as an 11th Legacy Species in 2019, to reflect increasing threats to its survival. In the last 12 months alone, Taronga partnered with 28 organisations working on the front line of conservation across 17 countries. -
K-Pop in Latin America: Transcultural Fandom and Digital Mediation
International Journal of Communication 11(2017), 2250–2269 1932–8036/20170005 K-Pop in Latin America: Transcultural Fandom and Digital Mediation BENJAMIN HAN Concordia University Wisconsin, USA This article examines the transnational popularity of K-pop in Latin America. It argues K- pop as a subculture that transforms into transcultural fandom via digital mediation, further resulting in its accommodation into Latin American mass culture. The article further engages in a critical analysis of K-pop fan activism in Latin America to explore the transcultural dynamics of K-pop fandom. In doing so, the article provides a more holistic approach to the study of the Korean Wave in Latin America within the different “scapes” of globalization. Keywords: K-pop, fandom, Latin America, digital culture, Korean Wave The popularity of K-pop around the globe has garnered mass media publicity as Psy’s “Gangnam Style” reached number two on the Billboard Charts and became the most watched video on YouTube in 2012. Although newspapers, trade journals, and scholars have examined the growing transnational popularity of K-pop in East Asia, the reception and consumption of K-pop in Latin America have begun to receive serious scholarly consideration only in the last few years. Numerous reasons have been explicated for the international appeal and success of K-pop, but it also is important to understand that the transnational and transcultural fandom of K-pop cannot be confined solely to its metavisual aesthetics that creatively syncretize various genres of global popular music such as Black soul and J-pop. K-pop as hybrid music accentuated with powerful choreography is a form of visual spectacle but also promotes a particular kind of lifestyle represented by everyday modernity in which social mobility in the form of stardom becomes an important facet of the modernization process in Latin America. -

The high energy performance video sees the group once again showcasing their masterful dance skills and choreography. Ever since their debut of their “TREASURE” series, ATEEZ has been applauded for their unique universe storytelling, where the members of the band had embarked on a journey in search of the treasure. Last year, the band opened a new chapter to yet another series; this time titled “FEVER.” Their unique storytelling is consistently acclaimed as it stands out amongst other K-Pop acts. If their last EP, ZERO : FEVER Part.1 was about the realities of the disheartened youth who lose their spark and continues to live in the cold world, then ZERO : FEVER Part.2 is about reigniting the flames around the world. Their lead track ‘Fireworks (I’m The One)’ especially contains the message about ATEEZ lighting their inner fire. September is National Library Card Sign-Up Month, a campaign established in 1987 by the American Library Association (ALA) and the National Commission on Libraries and Information Science. The month was chosen to coincide with the fall return to school for most children in the United States, to highlight the importance of public libraries, and how they contribute to, and complement, a child’s formal education. This year’s National Library Card Month is especially meaningful for two reasons. First, we can, finally, FULLY welcome kids back to our library for this special month. -
East Asian and Western Perception of Nature in 20Th Century Painting
East Asian and Western Perception of Nature in 20th Century Painting Sungsil Park Ph.D. 2009 1 East Asian and Western Perception of Nature in 20th Century Painting Park Sung-Sil A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the University of Brighton for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy April 2009 University of Brighton 2 Abstract The introduction aims to investigate both my painting and exhibition practice, and the historical and theoretical issues raised by them. It also examines different views on nature by comparing and contrasting 20th Century Western ideas with those of traditional Asian art and philosophies. There are two sections to this thesis; Section A contains an historical overview of Eastern and Western philosophy and art, Section B presents observations on my studio and exhibition practice. Section A is divided into two chapters. Chapter 1 examines concepts of nature in the East and West before the early 20th Century. It discusses examples of different approaches to nature and cross-cultural world views and explores the diversity of perceptions, especially Taoism and Buddhism, which emphasize harmony within nature and the principle of universal truth. It also gives pertinent and relevant examples of attitudes to nature in the Korean, Chinese and Japanese art of the 20th Century. Chapter 2 discusses new and changing attitudes to ecology, post 20th Century, and the environmental art movements of the East and West. Their ideas have a great deal in common with traditional Eastern views on nature and the mind, so have the potential to change both our identity and our relationship with nature. -
