In the future, theaters and TT will move in parallel. Both options offer their strengths. Image cover courtesy: Disney Hotstar Horror Is a Forgotten Art when it comes to Bollywood. If you ask me, there is not a single really good Hindi horror movie in existence. Yes, Ram Gopal Varma practically made a career out of it with movies like Kaun?, Bhoot and Phoonk, and we grew up ironically rewatch movies like the ones because they're fun bad. Genuine attempts like Tumbbad, Bhool Bhulaaiya, Phobia or Stree are rare, which is why they have failed to change the cinematic landscape. But none of them could cash in on the malleability of the genre. As a child I associate horror with scares after watching movies like Jaws, The Outcation of the Devil, Foreshadowing or even Jurassic Park series. A sudden burst in score, jarring image and gross practical effects provided adrenaline that caused me to squeeze every hole in my body and come to the conclusion that it was terrifying. But with time, and immersion in Alfred Hitchcock's filmography, I realized that the horror was about much more. It's about character. It's about the atmosphere. We are talking about emotionally resonant plot streams. And it's about all the technical aspects of coming together to induce a sense of fear. However, I have not seen change in perspective in Bollywood. SEE ALSO: Huma Kureshi stars in the upcoming Horror flick zack Snyder, if I take the last decade into account, the industry has conjured up such films like Raaz: Mystery Continues, 13 B, Phoonk 2, Hisss, Shaapit, Haunted - 3D, Ragini MMS, Bhoot Returns, 1920: The Evil Returns, Raaz 3D, Ek Thi Daayan, Ragini MMS 2, Pizza, Trip To Bhrhanga, 1921 and Amavas, and they are all created with the same ingredients. There will be half-baked love story, poorly developed characters, a bunch of jump-scares achieved by some over-the-top editing, a twist that is devoid of any emotional impact and a plot that has no reason to justify its place in the horror genre. And despite the inclusion of actor of the caliber of Vicky Kaushal in Bhoot: Part One - The Haunted Ship, I have a faint sense that he will go down the same path again. Now, given how the Karan Dzhokhar film has not yet come out, I can't firmly assure that this is a bad horror movie and I sincerely hope it proves me wrong. However, if this proves to be exactly what I predict, then as a horror fan, I would feel a responsibility on my shoulders making sure it doesn't happen again. So, Bollywood, let me introduce you to the filmography of one of the best contemporary horror directors, Mike Flanagan. After making several films for the drama genre, Flanagan immersed himself in the horror genre with films such as Absentia, Oculus, Hush, Before I Wake, Ouija: Origin of Evil, Gerald's Game and a masterclass in TV shows, i.e. Netflix's The Haunting of Hill House. And, believe me or not, he walks a fine line between the character-driven aspect of his story with the deep, mentally scarring images he is capable of imagining. He uses jump scares like any other horror director would, but they never undermine progression in the plot. There's a lot of drama in his story, but they never cut down on the terror that horror movies require. How does he do that? Well, that's what we're here to deconstruct. The thin line (mentioned above) is that Flanagan walks is known as Fear, a word that is defined as fear of fear. This means that it does not depict a version of fear, but plays on a subjective analysis of the viewer's fear. So when you see Hush, who is about a deaf and dumb woman living in the middle of nowhere and being pursued by a serial killer, you notice that he starts with a vulnerability of character and continues to lean on it, showing how she is exposed, in terms of her surroundings. That's why by the time the antagonist appears on the screen, you (or the viewer) have already created a mental image of him, thus making him look like a more dangerous entity than he already is. At first glance, the story of how Gerald's game is incredibly difficult. It's just about a woman who went on. rough weekend with her husband and eventually get hand-cuffed to her bed. How can you create horror out of it? Well, you can do what Racini MMS did and introduce the evil person who torments her to death. Or you can do what Flanagan does and do her introspection and retrospectives about the horrors of her past. But, surprise, that's not where he stops. He goes ahead and makes her doubt everything she witnessed. Because when a character starts to question everything they see, you can't help yourself from questioning what you see. And that's what increases the horror of being handcuffed to your bed, voluntarily or unwittingly, tenfold. SEE ALSO: Ready or not a trailer is proof that the horror genre needs a darker comedy final element of the story that it includes is a relatable feeling of haunting, and it's most noticeable in Ghost Hill House.
