Gillette Museum of Arthropod Diversity, Department of Bioagricultural Sciences and Pest Management Colorado State University, Fort Collins, CO 80523 Abstract A list of 1531 species ofLepidoptera is presented, collected over 15 years (1988 to 2002), in eleven southern West Virginia counties. A variety of collecting methods was used, including netting, light attracting, light trapping and pheromone trapping. The specimens were identified by the currently available pictorial sources and determination keys. Many were also sent to specialists for confirmation or identification. The majority of the data was from Kanawha County, reflecting the area of more intensive sampling effort by the senior author. This imbalance of data between Kanawha County and other counties should even out with further sampling of the area. Key Words: Appalachian Mountains, -

The monophyly of the Endopterygota is supported primarily by the specialized larva without external wing buds and with degradable eyes, as well as by the quiescence of the last immature (pupal) stage; a specialized morphology of the latter is not an en dopterygote groundplan trait. There is weak support for the basal endopterygote splitting event being between a Neuropterida + Co leóptera clade and a Mecopterida + Hymenoptera clade; a fully sclerotized sitophore plate in the adult is a newly recognized possible groundplan autapomorphy of the latter. The molecular evidence for a Strepsiptera + Díptera clade is differently interpreted by advo cates of parsimony and maximum likelihood analyses of sequence data, and the morphological evidence for the monophyly of this clade is ambiguous. The basal diversification patterns within the principal endopterygote clades (“orders”) are succinctly reviewed. The truly species-rich clades are almost consistently quite subordinate. A Taxonomic Study of the Family Micropterigidae

Seventeen species in five genera are recognized from Japan, described or redescribed with the male and female genital figures. Of these, two genera, Issikiomartyria Hashimoto and Kurokopteryx Hashimoto, and seven species, Issikiomartyria akemiae Hashimoto, Issikiomartyria plicata Hashimoto, Issikiomartyria distincta Hashimoto, Issikiomartyria bisegmentata Hashimoto, Kurokopteryx dolichocerata Hashimoto, Neomicropteryx kiwana Hashimoto, and Neomicropteryx redacta Hashimoto, are new to science. A new combination is given: Issikiomartyria nudata (Issiki). Biology and immature structures of the Japanese species are also described together with the keys to genera and to species provided on the basis of the adult characters. Phylogenetic relationships among the Northern Hemisphere genera are analyzed by the cladistic analysis using PAUP* (Swofford, 2002) based on the morphological characters of adults. A monophyly of the Northern Hemisphere genera except for Micropterix is supported by nine apomorphies, but their immediate sister taxon remains unresolved. Moths of the Buffalo Lake Moraine Conservation Area, 2001- 2011

The present report is essentially an update that includes a number of redeterminations and additions to the information in last year’s report. It also follows the up-to-date order and taxonomy of Pohl et al. (2010), rather than that of Hodges et al. (1983). Felix Sperling and Gary Anweiler, Alberta Lepidopterist’s Guild members, in the Buffalo Lake Conservation Area, August 18, 2002 THE AREA The Buffalo Lake Moraine Conservation Area is made up of contiguous quarters of land, located 18 km north of Stettler, in south-central Alberta. Known originally as the Caine property, the quarters were variously purchased by The Alberta Conservation Association, The Alberta Fish and Game Association, Ducks Unlimited Canada and The Nature Conservancy of Canada in June 1999. Additional quarters have been purchased since then. Ecologically, the area is made up of rolling, morainal aspen parkland. There is evidence that some areas were cultivated well over 50 years ago, but since that time, the land has been used for grazing cattle. A grazing inventory study was carried out by Mancroft-EBA Consultants 2 Ltd. (1998). A detailed vegetation and range resource inventory was carried out in 2005 (Rangeland Conservation Service Limited, 2006). No grazing was allowed in 1999. In 2000 the area was divided into 3 grazing paddocks. Since 2000 limited grazing has been allowed with one of the quarters/paddocks being idled each year. -

LEPIDOPTERA (MOTHS AND BUTTERFLIES) AT INVERNESS RIDGE IN CENTRAL COASTAL CALIFORNIA AND THEIR RECOVERY FOLLOWING A WILDFIRE J. A. Powell Essig Museum of Entomology, University of California, Berkeley, CA 94720 Abstract.— In numbers of species, Lepidoptera (butterflies and moths) make up the largest group of plant-feeding animals in North America. Caterpillars of nearly all species feed on plants, and most of them are specialists on one or a few kinds of plants. Therefore they are liable to be severely affected by wildfires, and secondarily, their parasites and predators, including birds, bats, lizards, and rodents, suffer losses of a major food resource. In October 1995, a wildfire swept over part of The Point Reyes National Seashore, burning more than 12,300 acres (5,000 hectares) of public and private land, following a fire-free period of several decades. I tracked survival and recolonization by moths and butterflies during the subsequent five seasons. I made daytime searches for adults and caterpillars approximately monthly from March through October and collected blacklight trap samples, mostly in May and September-October. More than 650 species of Lepidoptera have been recorded in the Inverness Ridge area, and about 375 of them were recorded during the post-fire survey, including larvae of 31% of them. Plants in a Bishop pine forest higher on the ridge, where the fire was most intense, accumulated their caterpillar faunas slowly, while Lepidoptera feeding on plants typical of riparian woods in the lower canyons reestablished sooner and more completely. Recolonization varied markedly among different plant species, and the species richness gradually increased, in marked contrast to generalizations about effects of fire on arthropods derived from fire management of grasslands. -

Kurz Abstract Micropterix stuebneri Zeller, Werno & Kurz, sp. n. is described from the Sierra Nevada (Spain) and compared with its likely closest relative Micropterix isobasella Staudinger 1871. The new species is well characterized by its wing pattern and by the structure of the male genitalia. This is the eighth species of Micropterix Hübner, [1825] known for the Spanish fauna (mainland) with certainty. A Spanish checklist is presented. Fischer A THESIS Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Entomology—Master of Science ABSTRACT REGIONAL AND NATIONAL TRENDS IN LEPIDOPTERA COLLECTING IN THE UNITED STATES SINCE 1800 By Erica E. Fischer Though natural history collections began as private demonstrations of wealth and knowledge, they are now places of public learning and depositories of biodiversity. Insects have been collected for their beauty and small size since the beginnings of natural history collections, making them ideal for studies of long-term collecting patterns. This thesis project characterizes collecting efforts focused on butterflies and moths within the United States, both at the institutional and national level. The A. J. Cook Arthropod Research Collection (ARC) at Michigan State University contains 96,618 databased Lepidoptera specimens, predominantly collected in the state of Michigan. The ARC has a long history of involvement by avocational collectors, both in terms of specimen donation and curation. Their contributions grew significantly in the 1950s. However, the number of specimens added annually by both professionals and non-professionals has decreased greatly since 1970. More than 1 million Lepidoptera specimens held in various US collections were also used to examine trends in Lepidoptera collecting nationally. Collecting has been inconsistent over time and markedly on the decline since the 1990s. States are not evenly represented in this dataset, mirroring the inconsistency seen in county representation among Michigan specimens in the ARC. This uneven distribution is at least partially associated with a lack of funding for databasing and other areas of curatorial effort for insect collections, in addition to a decrease in natural history education in K-12 and undergraduate curriculums.
