We all have dreams. They can be big or small. Some are easier than others to accomplish. Oftentimes, we may not be sure where or how to start. THCF connects your dreams with the dreams of others to make a real difference in our communities.

This past year was another stellar example of this. With the support of our donors, volunteers, Board and Advisory Boards, we grew our total assets by 19% and the overall THCF investment portfolio earned 17.5%, enabling us to fund thousands of dollars in grants and scholarships. Total grants from all funds, including donor advised funds, scholarships and our annual community grants process totaled $3.5 million.

We are grateful for those who, through thoughtful planning, have made provisions in their estates to benefit the community. Thanks to 95 Heartland Legacy Society members who, through their estate plans, have left a lasting legacy of philanthropy that will benefit future generations.

Last year, $174,320 was awarded from 88 scholarships to area students. Scholarships are available for community high school seniors, undergraduate students and graduate students pursuing a higher education degree, including technical schools. The annual grants process awards funds that donors have entrusted to the Board to administer. Through our grants committee, with representatives from our four Advisory Boards and input from the Youth Advisory Council, THCF awarded $195,609 to 47 nonprofit organizations. We are honored to play a role in funding the good work for students and nonprofits in our community.

Our Youth Advisory Council (YAC) is a way for local students to learn about philanthropy and engage in the community. We added two new schools to our list this year, bringing the number of participating high schools to 13 and the number of students to 152. In their 4th annual fundraiser, Strike in the Night – Give to Infinity and Beyond, the students raised $4,700 for the YAC Endowment Fund which now has assets of more than $49,000.

Our Community for All Ages Coalition continued its work helping our community plan for the changing demographics and a doubling of the age 65+ population during the next 20 years. As I attended the meetings of the Coalition this year, I was impressed with this group of more than 55 community leaders and their commitment to get things accomplished. On April 1, 2013, our Care Connection Website was launched in partnership with the Mid-Continent Public Library to provide information to seniors and their caregivers on quality services they may need. This site was recognized in November with an IMPACT Award from the Kansas City Business Journal. The coalition also actively supported the start-up of a new nonprofit transportation provider,Independent Transportation Network of Greater Kansas City (iTN) that began operations in Lee’s Summit in October with plans to expand to other communities in Eastern Jackson County.

It has been a pleasure serving as the Chairman for the past year. THCF and I thank you for your generous gift of time, talents and funds. I’m looking forward to another successful year of connecting dreams and making a difference in our community.

6 Leave a Lasting Legacy

When we talk about leaving a legacy for future generations, we frequently think of those character traits we try to instill in our children and grandchildren - of our treatment of those around us, and of doing what we can to make the world a better place through our actions. But some friends of our communities choose to have a continuing impact long after their deaths. Their significant legacy gift to the Foundation provides ongoing impact in our area.

Lorene Mitchell and Vernon Carl Jelley, Jr., M.D. are two people who have made a lasting legacy gift and, even though they are both no longer with us, their legacy will continue to make a powerful impact on our community for years to come.

Lorene Mitchell Lorene Mitchell was one of those people who lived her life making an effort to change her world for the better. She joined the Marines during the Second World War because a few women were able to join that branch. She later laughed about the psychiatric evaluation to assess her ability to handle the difficulties associated with being a Marine. During her years of service, at the risk of military discipline, she informed an officer that the women he criticized for not working hard enough were working six and a half days per week, off only for Sunday church. Later, that officer apologized to her.

Lorene, as the oldest daughter, cared for her parents until they died. She was a lifelong supporter of women and children and was keenly aware of the difficulties that single women with children faced. Since Lorene had no children, she created a foundation fund at Truman Heartland to support charities that focused on her sense of helping women and children. The Mitchell Foundation Fund will make grants in her name that will be changing lives of women and children for generations to come. Can you think of a better legacy to give to your community?

Vernon Carl Jelley, Jr., M.D. Vernon Carl Jelley, Jr., M.D. began his private practice in Orthopedic Surgery in Independence and Blue Springs in 1978. He retired from private practice in 1999. He began teaching adult swim aerobics in 2006 and began substitute teaching in the Independence School District in 2008. Dr. Jelley felt hard work, responsibility, honesty and integrity were the building blocks to a meaningful and purposeful life. He believed in contributing to the greater good of the community and giving of your time and talents to improve the quality of life for those in need.

A long-time resident of Blue Springs, Dr. Jelley made a provision in his estate to support charities in our community. He entrusted the Truman Heartland Community Foundation to use his charitable dollars to meet children’s education needs in Eastern Jackson County through the annual Community Grants process. The first grants in his honor will be made in 2014. What a great way to carry on his legacy!

7 Coalition for a Community for All Ages

Our Dream for a Community for All Ages

The Community for All Ages Coalition for Eastern Jackson County works to ensure that our community is collaboratively and proactively working together to ensure that we are prepared for the challenges and opportunities created by a doubling of the age 65+ population in the next 20 years. Today in our metropolitan community, with the Baby Boom Generation starting to reach retirement age, more than 2,000 people per month are turning 65.

This leadership group, with more than 55 members, and led by Jim Pryde (past Chairman of THCF Board), was very active in 2013. Members include City Managers, Chambers of Commerce, Faith Communities, Non-Profits, Hospitals, Developers and Civic Organizations. By bringing leadership from all segments of our communities together with a common focus we can make a greater impact.

http://careconnection.mymcpl.org/ 8 Progress in 2013

• Launched the Care Connection website on April 1, 2013 in partnership with the Mid-Continent Public Library and Shepherd’s Center Central. Care Connection is a free, online directory dedicated to providing seniors and their caregivers with easy access to quality information and resources to maintain one’s independence and provide the best care available in 23 distinct service categories.

• The Care Connection website was recognized in November with an IMPACT Award from the Kansas City Business Journal.

• The Independent Transportation Network of Greater Kansas City (iTN) began operations in October in Lee’s Summit. The coalition actively supported this start up and the foundation made a series of grants totaling $14,000 to assist in getting them rolling.

o The goal of iTN is to enable people, who cannot or no longer wish to drive, a unique transportation service that will allow them to remain active and engaged in the community.

o iTN provides, through its network of volunteer drivers, a unique service that mimics how anyone of us would treat a family member if we were providing them transportation.

o iTN plans to expand service in 2014 to other communities in Eastern Jackson County and, in time, will serve the entire metropolitan area.

• Our coalition’s efforts are recognized as a community engagement model by the Mid- America Regional Council. Our coalition leadership actively participates on the Metro Wide KC Communities for All Ages Advisory Board and its committees.

• Our new Civic Engagement Committee has begun exploring how to effectively harness the energy and talents of our growing 50 plus population to improve area communities and will launch a
