These words that we repeated in the response of the Responsorial Psalm clearly express the feelings that fill our hearts today, the First Sunday of Advent. The reason why we can go ahead joyfully, as the Apostle Paul has exhorted us, lies in the fact that our salvation is now at hand. The Lord is coming! With this knowledge we set out on the journey of Advent, preparing ourselves to celebrate with faith the extraordinary event of the Lord's birth. In the coming weeks, day after day the liturgy will offer for our reflection Old Testament texts that recall the lively, constant desire that kept alive in the Jewish people the expectation of the Messiah's coming. Watchful in prayer, let us too seek to prepare our hearts to receive the Lord, who will come to show us his mercy and give us his salvation. Precisely during this time of waiting, Advent is a season of hope, and it is to Christian hope that I wished to dedicate my second Encyclical, officially presented the day before yesterday; it begins with the words St Paul addressed to the Christians of Rome: "Spe salvi facti sumus - in hope we were saved" (Rom 8: 24). In the Encyclical, I write among other things that "we need the greater and lesser hopes that keep us going day by day.

    By Edward Pentin ROME, January 24, 2013 (Zenit.org) - "The only worthwhile striving is after the highest ideals: If you aim for an easy target, your standard will inevitably decline, and no progress is ever made, except through real effort and real suffering." These are words attributed to Fra' Andrew Bertie, the 78th Grand Master of the Order of Malta, whose cause for beatification is expected to open next month, according to informed sources. Andrew Willoughby Ninian Bertie, a distant cousin of Queen Elizabeth II whose family has had royal ties for centuries, was the first Englishman to be elected to the post of Grand Master in the Order's 900 year history. He served in the Rome-based position from 1988 until his death in February 2008 at the age of 78. But for all the lofty titles and blue blood, those who knew Fra' Andrew remember him as a down-to-earth yet eccentric personality, a true gentleman with impeccable manners, and greatly loved by former pupils at Worth Abbey School in Sussex, England, where he taught for 23 years. "He was an extremely vivid person and one of the teachers whom the pupils all remember," said Father Stephen Ortiger, a colleague and friend at Worth, a Benedictine school. The priest said he felt Fra' Andrew would be "convulsed with laughter" if he heard his cause for beatification was to be opened. He didn't have an aura of holiness, Father Ortiger said, "not because he wasn't holy but because he would rather die than exude an aura of holiness -- he would do everything by stealth and wouldn't wear his heart or his goodness on his sleeve." "If he saw a balloon was coming," he said, "he would prick it." Alumni of Worth recall how, on his way to breakfast each morning, Fra' Andrew would give the fullest possible voice to the Moslem call to prayer -- Allah u Akbar.

This national shrine commemorates the martyrdom of the Jesuit Jean de Brébeuf and his companions in 1649. Despite being closed for the winter, the Director, Father Michael Knox, sj, opened the site for us and guided us through a discussion, mass, a communal meal, and a visit to all parts of the shrine, explaining the meaning and the need for a true commitment to Christ, as well as the history of the original Jesuits at Midland. Very few National Pilgrimage to Lourdes churches can concentrate the mind like the simple clearing in the from May 4 to May 8, 2018 forest at St - Ignace, where the martyrs were tortured and died for their faith and their parishioners. Tuitio Fidei et Obsequium Pauperum Many of us felt this five hour pilgrimage to be as intense and more personal than even Lourdes......and yet many Canadians do not know of it.     Malteser in Deutschland Jahresbericht 2016 ÜBER DIE MALTESER WER WIR SIND: Die Malteser sind eine internationale katholische Hilfsorganisa- 01 tion, die in Deutschland und weltweit tätig ist. In Deutschland engagieren sich fast 50.000 Malteser ehrenamtlich für Menschen in Notlagen – unabhän- gig von deren Religion, Herkunft oder politischer Überzeugung. Mit fast 31.000 hauptamtlichen Mitarbeitern sind die Malteser zugleich einer der großen Arbeitgeber im Gesundheits- und Sozialwesen. WAS WIR TUN: Die Hilfe der Malteser hat viele Anlässe. Genauso vielfältig ist die Organisation. Überwiegend ehrenamtlich geprägt sind der Zivil- und Kata- 02 strophenschutz, die Erste-Hilfe-Ausbildung, die Begleitung von alten, kran- ken oder benachteiligten Menschen sowie die Jugend- und Auslandsarbeit. Hinzu kommt eine große Bandbreite an sozialunternehmerischen Diensten, darunter Rettungsdienst und Krankentransport, Hausnotruf und Menü- service. Die Malteser betreiben Krankenhäuser, Altenhilfeeinrichtungen, Schu- len und soziale Einrichtungen für Jugendliche, Suchtkranke und Asylsuchende.
