Fairchild Ruggles Abstract The word “bazaar” comes from an ancient word “wazaar” meaning market. The word “baza” has been used in other countries such as Turkey, Arabic countries and India as well.1 Bazaars are historic market places that provide trade services as well as other functions. Their historic buildings are renowned for their architectural aesthetics, and in old cities such as Tehran (Iran) they are considered the centerpiece of activities with architectural, cultural, historical, religious, and commercial values. However, during the past 400 years, they have undergone social and environmental changes. The neighborhood of the Tehran Bazaar has in recent decades become degraded, which has consequently decreased the social value of the historic Bazaar. The ruined urban condition makes it impossible for contemporary visitors to have a pleasurable experience while visiting the Bazaar, although that was historically their experience. As Tehran began to grow, much of the trade and finance in the city has moved to the newly developed section of the city, diminishing the importance of the bazaars. Today, shoppers and residents living in the Bazaar neighborhood inhabit dilapidated buildings, while customers and tourists—when they go there at all—experience a neighborhood that lacks even the most basic urban amenities such as sidewalks, drainage, benches, trees and lighting. (Asteraceae, Cardueae) from Iran.- Iran. J. Bot. 25 (1): 49-55.-Tehran. Echinops is a genus of Asteraeceae that is represented in Iran by 72 species, karyotype analysis was performed on 18 population of 7 Echinops species in southern slope of Central Albourz of Iran . The taxa revealed chromosome counts of 2n=30, 32, 34 and 36. Chromosome numbers of 5 species are reported for the first time including E. cephalotes, E. chorassanicus, E. macrophyllus, E. robustus and E. elbursensis. There are multiple basic chromosome numbers in a few Echinops species. Differences in basic chromosome numbers point towards the possible role played by centric fusion/fission in the karyotypic evolution of the genus. The chromosomes were mainly metacentric or sub-metacentric and their size varied from 41.40 μm in E. cephalotes of Khojir (1) to 79.02 μm in E. elbursensis of Emamzadeh Hashem population. The species occupied classes 1A, 1B and 2B of stebbin's karyotype classification, indicating them to have primitive karyotype. Cluster analysis of karyotype features indicated that cytological studies didn’t support sectional classification. (Persian walnut), is a temperate nut crop and Iran is one of its centers of origin and diversity. According to the statistics provided in 2007 by (FAO), Persian walnut grows in Iran, ranking third globally. As geographical conditions affect the nutritional value of walnuts, the objective of this study was evaluation of protein, crude fiber, fatty acids and some mineral element contents in samples in Tehran and Karaj County farmlands as two economically important provinces. Samples were collected during the 2 years harvest from 12 different distinguished cultivars of trees grown in a replicated trial in an experimental orchard. All trees under the study were of seedlings origin and are growing naturally and treating traditionally. The order depending on the contents of elements (mg/100 g) in J. regia samples in Karaj studied regions was Mg> K> Fe > Cu >Ca >Zn> Na, whereas in Tehran farmlands the order is: Mg> K> Fe > Ca >Cu >Zn> Na which shows that high levels of these elements in the soil of area, have a great impact on the highness of calcium and copper in the fruits. Total oil content ranged from 60.9 to 73.1%, while the crude protein ranged from 13.5 to 20.2%.
