HARRI AHMAS, PAINTER OF DEEP WATERS AND DARK TONES by Jan Lehtola Harri Pentti Ahmas was born in Vaasa, Finland, on 25 April 1957, the youngest child of Rauni and Pentti Ahmas. He graduated from Kokkola High School in 1976, having taken piano lessons privately with Vera Froloff from 1967. From 1973 to 1976 he studied piano, guitar, bassoon and music theory at the Central Ostrobothnian Music Institute. Playing light music in a band was also important to him in his youth. On leaving school, he entered the Sibelius Academy, where he studied first in the school-music department (1976–81) and then in the general department (1981–84): bassoon with Emanuel Elola and composition with Einar Englund and Einojuhani Rautavaara. Graduating in the bassoon in 1984, he was the first in Finland to give a debut bassoon recital at the Sibelius Academy, in 1986. He studied further with Karl Öhlberger at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna in 1982, and took private lessons with Milan Turkovic in Vienna in 1983–84, and with Gábor Janota at the Liszt Academy in Budapest in 1984. In 1981 and again from 1985 to 1989 he taught the bassoon at the Sibelius Academy. Ahmas played the bassoon in the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, first as a deputy in 1980–82 and thereafter as a member of the Orchestra until 1989. Since then, he has been Principal Bassoon of the Lahti Symphony Orchestra. He also played in the Savonlinna Opera Festival Orchestra from 1983 to 1996. He has appeared as soloist and in chamber ensembles at the Helsinki Festival, the Bergen Music Festival, in St Petersburg, Stockholm and Vienna, and at the Kuhmo and Crusell Chamber Music Festivals, and has been the soloist with a number of Finnish orchestras. -

The wind- chests and nearly all pipes in the manual divisions are original. The Pedal was enlarged in 1935 by Hugo Distler, and since the most recent refurbishing (Hillebrand 1977/78) the organ has contained 31 stops over three manuals and ORGAN pedal. It is in the old choir pitch (Chorton) and tuned to the Werckmeister tem- perament. All the pipes are metal, and additions or expansions have precisely followed the historical alloy composition and scaling. Walcha’s recordings there in 1947 were the first to be made for the Archiv Produktion label. (See cover photo on CD 106–125.) At 3:15 we gather at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 419 Shawmut Avenue. The 2-6 Hook & Hastings Co. organ was built about 1928 and at least serves to reveal the ''taste of the times. 11 The church, however, is very up-to-date in its service to the South End. At 4:00 Barbara Owen will demonstrate the excellent three-manual 1859 E. & G. G. Hook organ in All Saints Lutheran Church, 91 West Newton Street. The organ is Opus 254 and was built for the Church of the Unity on the same location. The Unitarian congregation erected a new Gothic building in 1898 and the organ was placed in a new case in the rear gallery. Following a recent fire, Pastor Vernon Carter worked enthusiastically for the restoration of the building, an expensive undertaking for the congregation. The organ has been in use for just two weeks. Several Club members have wanted to discuss the possibility of helping in the restoration of a worth,y old organ in greater Boston, and the Hook at All Saints is perhaps the best instrument for such a project. The ramifications of the undertaking will be discussed at the January meeting. MIXTURES - Alan Laufman reports that the Organ Clearing House has relocated another old organ. PATRIMONIO NATURAL Y TURISMO EN EL PARQUE NACIONAL DE MONFRAGÜE, Enrique López Rodríguez PATRIMONIO NATURAL Y TURISMO EN EL PARQUE NACIONAL DE MONFRAGÜE ENRIQUE LÓPEZ RODRÍGUEZ Abstract: Natural Heritage constitutes one of the main assets of the territories. The basis of the conservation has been represented by the protected areas figures, being National Parks the maximum representation of environmental protection in a national level. In this way, we will try to show how the development of complementary socio-economic activities, such a tourism, can generate a valori- zation of natural resources and contributes to the socioeconomic development of rural areas included in Monfragüe National Park in Extremadura. Key-words: Natural Heritage, Monfragüe National Park, protected natural area, tourism. 1. INTRODUCCIÓN as áreas protegidas se han convertido en la piedra angular de la Lconservación de la diversidad biológica, del almacenamiento de material genético, del suministro de servicios esenciales de los ecosistemas a favor del bienestar humano, hasta la contribución al desarrollo sostenible. La conservación ha sido reconocida desde distintos ámbitos, desde los organismos internacionales y gobiernos nacionales hasta las agrupaciones locales y las comunidades: “el medio ambiente es un activo, y como tal hay que explotarlo y mantenerlo. Calidad de vida y bienestar no son incompatibles” (Foronda, 2002: 177). En los últimos años se ha producido un cambio en la concepción de los espacios protegidos, se ha pasado de una protección puntual en la que predominaban los valores naturales a una concepción más globalizada en la que se incluyen los aspectos humanos, sociales y económicos. Basically a flute with a blockflute/whistle head on it. 3 (L): Complete set of transverse flutes (Soprano in A, tenor/alto in D, and bass in G.)– 6 holed, cylindrical bore. Known from anMquity, but not popular in the middle ages. Used from early renaissance to classical era. Modern flute patented in 1847. 4: Swiss fife. Played with military drum. 3(R):Small Swiss Fifes 6: Tabor – drum played with tabor pipe. Cognate with ‘tambourine’ 5: Tabor pipe – only 3 holes, played with one hand through harmonic series 2 Complete set of recorders.
