Continuing on, the road bends south and, a short distance further, reaches a signed junction (0.6 mi.) where the Red Trail turns left and enters the woods. At first following an old logging trace, the trail soon bears left and crests a low rise before joining a well-worn mountain bike trail, the Kirby Connector (0.7 mi.).

The trail on Moose Mountain was developed in 1979 after a proposal by the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) was forwarded to the De- partment of Forests, Parks and Recreation, requesting to build a link trail between Wheeler Pond and Mount Hor. 16 Originally dubbed the Wheeler Pond Trail, the route traverses the Moose Mountain ridge and then, descending into Big Valley, climbs the western slope of Mount Hor, intersecting the Herbert Hawkes Trail on the Mount Hor ridge. Today, the Moose Mountain Trail is part of a broad trail net- work that has grown throughout Willoughby State Forest. While moderate in difficulty, the Moose Mountain Trail is steep in places and covers a large area of remote forest.

Lim- ited parking with space for 2-3 vehicles is available at a small road- side turnout near the signed trailhead. From the parking area, the yellow-blazed trail enters an open hard- wood forest and follows a wide path. Bearing left, the trail climbs gently, then more moderately, before leveling briefly and crossing a stream and scrambling up an eroded slope (0.3 mi.).

Continuing on, the road begins a gradual ascent and Hedgehog Mountain, a small for- ested summit, becomes visible on the right. Soon the road enters a small clearing (1.0 mi.) once used as a log landing site and bears right where glimpses of Haystack and then Bald Mountain, with its signa- ture fire tower, are visible to the left. The woods road continues and enters a second, larger log landing and an open junction ( 1.4 mi.) where, turning right, it crosses a tiny stream and follows a smaller woods road.
