Weeks, Governor: Sir:—In accordance with Act 405 of the General Laws of Vermont I herewith present my Seventeenth Report as State Geologist. This Report includes a discussion of various geological fea- tures as found in Vermont, written for this volume by a number of competent geologists, as is shown in greater detail in the Intro- duction which follows. As heretofore in these Reports, articles of value to students of Vermont Geology are presented. Respectfully submitted, GEORGE H. PERKINS, State Geologist. DECEMBER 1, 1930. INTRODUCTION This is intended only as a brief summary of what is contained in the following pages. As has been noticed in preceding volumes of these Reports the geology of \Termont is for the most part exceedingly complicated and can be clearly understood only after extended and careful study. To elucidate as far as possible the history of the rocks of the Green Mountain mass as well as that of the rest of the State and to present the results and conclusions reached by such study is the main purpose of these Geological Reports, which have been issued biennially for over thirty years. As far as it has been attainable, all that could he found that helped to a good understanding of Vermont geology has been included in the volumes published. As in most of the former volumes, so in this, the aid of stu- dents of Vermont geology has been sought and, as the contents of the volumes shows, in many cases obtained, so that in a file of these Reports most that has been published in respect of Vermont geology can be found, in most articles as original contributions, in some as reprints. "The Bibliography of Vermont Petrology," by Miss Hubbell, shows in a very useful fashion what has been written upon this subject; besides this considerable material not within the scope of Miss Hubbell's paper is yet unpublished. As far as possible it is desired that the discussions in these Reports shall be as free from technicalities as may be so that the various papers included shall be as intelligible as they can he to readers who have little geological training. In some cases the use of technical terms is unavoidable, for none other are in existence. In the first paper on "The Physiography of Vermont," by the Geologist, the physical features of the State, lakes, mountains, rivers, etc., are more or less fully described, the object, as in- dicated in the paper, being to interest Vermonters in the more obvious features of the State and to some extent to understand how they came to be as we now see them. Connected with the surface features of Vermont, really form- ing an important part of them, are the altitudes of towns in the State. Perkins, which presents a summary of a careful study of the surface, as determined by the U. S. Topographical Survey now PHYSIOGRAPHY OF VERMONT well towards completion. G. H. The survey was introduced as a way of gathering resident input for the natural resource inventory. There were a total of 195 resident responses. The following is an overview of the results. Question 1: Rank each of Gilford’s natural resource features of importance to you using 1-3. (1 = Most Important, 2 = Somewhat Important, 3 = Not Important) For question one, residents found water quality as the most important feature. Residents found cemeteries as the least important feature. The following table contains the percentages of the respondents’ beliefs. As a result, officers failed to develop the technology gene and began to think of war as being inherently quantitatively and technological based. INDEX OF COLUMNALS 8 Remarks: In this section the stratigraphic range given under the genus is the compiled range of all named species based solely on columnals assigned to the genus. It should be noted that this range may and often differs considerably from the range given under the same genus in Section I, because that range is based on species identified on cups or crowns. All other abbreviations and format follow that of Section I. Generic names followed by the type species are based on columnals. Genera, not followed by the type species, are based on cups and crowns as given in Section I. There are a number of unlisted columnal taxa from the literature that are indexed as genera recognized on cups and crowns. Bassler and Moodey (1943) did not index columnal taxa that were not new names or identified genera with the species unnamed. I have included some of the omissions of Bassler and Moodey, but have not made a search of the extensive literature specifically for the omitted citations because of time constraints. Many of these unlisted taxa are illustrated in the early state surveys of the eastern and central United States. Many of the columnal species assigned to genera based on cups or crowns are incorrect assignments. An uncertain, but significant, number of the columnal genera are synonyms of other columnal genera as they are based on different parts of the stem of a single taxon. Also a number of the columnal genera are synonyms of genera based on cups and crowns as they come from more distal parts of the stem not currently known to be associated with the cup or crown.

Introduction In the beginning there was the landscape, crushed and folded and drained. The valleys and the mountains and the waters determined how people moved on that landscape, by foot or horse or canoe, for thousands of years. Animal paths became foot paths for human traffic, and horses. When settlers arrived, the paths grew into trails, which became town roads. The road network is a town’s history carved in dirt and gravel. There is no more permanent monument to the first settlers. Buildings collapse, are abandoned or replaced. Landscapes change from open to wooded in a few years. But highways rarely change. They may stray from their original beds, as sharp corners get rounded and wet spots are avoided, but they leave deep creases on the face of the town. Until something happens, we take roads for granted. When a bridge goes out, a stretch of gravel road is swept away in a flood, the snow accumulates in high drifts, when the roadbed is deep with mud or ribbed for our jostling pleasure, only then do we think about these ribbons of public property. In law, they are called public easements or public rights-of-way. Other than schools, the most important function of local government is maintenance of highways.

DATA Pnosr.BM In recent years, a number of intensive field and laboratory studies of the rocks of the White Mountain district in New Hamp- shire have been carried out. One result of these investigations is to show that there exists in this area a group of rocks with marked alkaline affinities (3)* to which the name White Mountain magma serieshas been applied (5, p.56). The various rock types of this group form a definite series,and wherever found in the area they possessthe same relative ages.Such a sequenceis of greatestim- portance to petrology and necessitatesan explanation. Accord- ingly, the writers have undertaken a study of this problem, the results of which are presented in this paper. ft is not pretended that this work is complete or that the problem has been entirely solved. Certain definite conclusions have been reached, however, and it is hoped that these may lead to a more complete under- standing of the evolution of the White Mountain magma series. The writers are especiallyindebted to ProfessorMarland Billings of Harvard University for his valuable assistancein preparing this paper.
