Morgan Retha Sherrod Director of Communications Director of Public Relations AACP AAMC 703-739-2330 ext. 1032 202-828-0975 [email protected] [email protected] Health Educators, Foundations Announce Competencies and Action Strategies for Interprofessional Education Washington, D.C., May 10, 2011—Two new reports released today by six national health professions associations and three private foundations recommend new competencies for interprofessional education in the health professions, and action strategies to implement them in institutions across the country. By establishing these competencies, the proponents believe our nation’s health care system can be transformed to provide collaborative, high-quality, and cost- effective care to better serve every patient. The first report, Core Competencies for Interprofessional Collaborative Practice, was produced by an expert panel convened in 2009 by the Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC), a unique partnership of six associations—the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine, the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy, the American Dental Education Association, the Association of American Medical Colleges, and the Association of Schools of Public Health. Interprofessional education, as defined by the World Health Organization, involves shared learning among students from two or more health professions. The panel was charged with identifying individual-level core interprofessional competencies for future health professionals. It proposed four domains of core competencies needed to provide integrated, high-quality care to patients within the nation’s current, evolving health care system. It also identified 38 specific subcompetencies that describe the essential behaviors across the four domains. Overall, the panel recommends that future health professionals be able to: Assert values and ethics of interprofessional practice by placing the interests, dignity, and respect of patients at the center of health care delivery, and embracing the cultural diversity and differences of health care teams. Leverage the unique roles and responsibilities of interprofessional partners to appropriately assess and address the health care needs of patients and populations served. --more-- Page 2—Interprofessional education reports Communicate with patients, families, communities, and other health professionals in support of a team approach to preventing disease and disability, maintaining health, and treating disease. Perform effectively in various team roles to deliver patient/population-centered care that is safe, timely, efficient, effective, and equitable. The second report, Team-Based Competencies, Building a Shared Foundation for Education and Clinical Practice, was the result of a conference, sponsored by the Health Resources and Services Administration, the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and the ABIM Foundation in partnership with IPEC. The meeting, held in February 2011, brought together more than 80 leaders from various health professions to preview the core competencies presented by IPEC, and create action strategies that would use them to “transform health professional education and health care delivery in the United States.” Conference participants developed the following action strategies to implement the IPEC core competencies and move to a system of educating health professionals to work collaboratively: 1) Communicate and disseminate the core competencies to key stakeholders—academic deans, policymakers, and health care leaders—and launch an education campaign that makes the critical link between collaborative health care teams and providing high- quality, safe, and cost-sensitive treatment. 2) Prepare faculty for teaching students how to work effectively as part of a team and encourage all health professions to use the competencies in their fields. 3) Develop metrics for interprofessional education and collaborative care to help advance team-based competencies in teaching and practice. 4) Forge partnerships among the academic community, health care providers, and government agencies to advance interprofessional education. He graduated from the University of Delaware and Syracuse Law School and served on the New Castle County Council. At age 29, he became one of the youngest people ever elected to the United States Senate. As a Senator from Delaware, Vice President Biden served as Chairman or Ranking Member of the Senate Judiciary Committee for 17 years and was widely recognized for his work on criminal justice issues. He also served as Chairman or Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee for 12 years, where he worked to shape U.S. foreign policy. During his time as the 47th Vice President of the United States, Joe Biden worked to reduce gun violence, address violence against women, and launch the Cancer Moonshot Research Initiative. Vice President Biden lost his first wife Neilia and his 13-month-old daughter Naomi in a car accident in 1972. His two sons, Beau and Hunter survived the crash. Beau went on to become Attorney General of the state of Delaware and also served honorably in the Iraq War, earning the Bronze Star. He died of brain cancer in 2015. Hunter graduated Yale Law School and pursued a career in banking and finance, drawing scrutiny from President-Elect Biden’s political opponents. In 1977, Joe Biden remarried and he and Jill, a life-long educator, had a daughter, Ashley in 1981. Joe and Jill Biden have five grandchildren: Naomi, Finnegan, Roberta Mabel ("Maisy"), Natalie, and Robert Hunter.

    PLENARY SESSION SPEAKERS Monday, August 18 HUONG LE, DDS, MA Dr. Huong Le has served as the Chief Dental Officer at Asian Health Services in Oakland, California since 2003. Dr. Le is currently the President of the National Network for Oral Health Access (NNOHA). On behalf of NNOHA, Dr. Le has collaborated with the ADA, ASTDD, and other organizations on various projects related to electronic health records (EHR). In November 2008, NNOHA's HIT Workgroup published its first white paper titled Guide to the Future: Using HIT to Improve Oral Health Access and Outcomes. In 2012 this was updated under Dr. Le’s leadership. Dr. Le is a graduate of Baylor University and the University of Texas Dental Branch in Houston. She completed a General Practice in Hospital Dentistry residency at Loma Linda Veteran’s Administration Hospital and received a Masters of Art degree in Dental Education from University of the Pacific. Dr. Le is a Fellow of The American College of Dentists, Pierre Fauchard Academy and a 2014 candidate for Fellow of The International College of Dentists. Dr. Le is currently serving as a member of the Board of Directors of Alameda County Dental Society and Western Clinicians Network where she was recognized in 2014 with a Clinical Excellence Award. She was the California Dental Association delegate for a number of years and ADA alternate delegate until she joined the state dental board. She was appointed by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to the Dental Board of California in 2009 and served as the Board President in 2013. She is now serving her second term on the dental board.

Collaboration to support primary care and the concept of a medical home, organization of care through cooperative networks of providers, and innovative use of technology to meet patient needs and hold down costs are examples of how North Dakota is able to provide its citizens with accessible, quality, and efficient health care despite the challenges of a rural setting. Rural communities have a unique context of community trust and interdependence, a social capital that allows them to innovate in meeting patients’ needs.
