Reinventing An/Other Anti-Capitalism in Mexico The Sixth Declaration of the EZLN and the “Other Campaign” Patrick Cuninghame1 Well, then, in Mexico what we want to create is an agreement with people and organizations that are decidedly of the left, because we believe that it is on the political left where the idea of resisting against neoliberal globalisation really lives, and the struggle to make justice, democracy, and freedom in any country wherever it would be, where there is only freedom for big business and there is only democracy to put up election campaign signs. And because we believe that only the left can come up with a plan for struggle so that our country, Mexico, does not die. And, then, what we believe is that, with these people and organizations of the left, we will chart a course to go to every corner of Mexico where there are humble and simple people like ourselves. In a moment when alternatives to neoliberal global capitalism appeared to have disappeared from the world stage, the Zapatista Army for National Liberation (EZLN) initiated a movement and process that would have significance not only in Chiapas and for Mexico, but for many struggles and movements around the world that would come to identify with a kind of “alter-globalization” project. -

What is the Sixth Zapatista Declaration? A Bit of History as the “Other Campaign” Begins in the City of San Cristóbal de las Casas By Concepción Villafuerte Reporting from Chiapas with the Amado Avendaño Figueroa Brigade January 1, 2006 The sixth comes before the seventh and after the fifth. What was the Fifth Declaration from the Lacandon Jungle? Few remember, but the history of the Zapatistas is written through the declarations that the EZLN (Zapatista Army of National Liberation) has released, beginning with the first: the declaration of war. The second: a call to civil society. The third: a call for the creation of a National Liberation Movement. The fourth: the formation of the Zapatista National Liberation Front. The fifth: the Consulta Nacional, the great dialog with all Mexicans except the government. And now, the Sixth, the initiation of the “Other Campaign,” the political struggle that exists outside the electoral farce. In the words of Subcomandante Marcos, “Together, we’re going to shake this country up from below, lift it up, and stand it on its head.” Mexico’s geographic shape resembles a cornucopia, the mythological “Horn of Plenty,” but in reverse; the horn’s fruits tumble out toward the United States of America, toward the gringos. It is a funnel shape, the top wide and the bottom thin. Chiapas is the country’s “last frontier,” the north being its “first” one. But on the other hand, Chiapas forms the crown of Central America, the beginning of the great nation; Chiapas is a strategic point for North American business. The Sixth Declaration from the Lacandon Jungle proposes realizing a national campaign for the building of another way of doing politics, for a program of national leftwing struggle, and for a new Constitution. -

Subcomandante Marcos: The Last Global Ethical Hero? Book Review Nick Henck. Subcomandante Marcos: Global Rebel Icon. Montreal: Black Rose Books, 2019. 152 pages. Appendix. Bibliography. Notes. Nick Henck ends his latest book on Subcomandante Marcos, the leader of the Zapatista Army of National Liberation, with this remark, “…the Subcomandante may well be the sole surviving globally recognized (and recognizable) ethical hero of iconic stature.” Henck had explained to us earlier the Sub had recognized that a cult of personality had developed around him and that the Sub rejected it and that to fend it off Marcos had changed his name to Galeano. Undeterred, Henck continues to burn incense on the altar of the Marcos cult. And he seldom calls him Galeano. Nick Henck, a law professor at Keio University in Tokyo, Japan and the author of no fewer than four books and many articles on Subcomandante Marcos, the leader and spokesperson of the EZLN that in January 1994 lad an uprising in the southernmost state of Mexico. Henck’s first book on MarcosSubcommander Marcos: The Man and the Mask, a 500-page biography published in 2007. In 2017 he published Insurgent Marcos: The Political- Philosophical Formation of the Zapatista Subcommander, a study of the intellectual formation of Marcos and of his writing. Two years ago he published The Zapatistas’ Dignified Rage: Final Public Speeches of Subcommander Marcos,which is described in its title. And now we have the new book Subcomandante Marcos: Global Rebel Icon,a short updated biography. If you want a handy little book of just 100 pages that reads like a long Wikipedia article providing all the dates, names, and events, this is your book. -

Podcast #1 Transcription Hadley Greswold ANOTHER WORLD IS HERE: BUILDING AUTONOMY AND RESILIENCE IN CHIAPAS, MEXICO With Alberto Vallejo Reyna, Podcast #1 Hadley: Good morning, let’s start this interview for this podcast. The first question reads: Could you share your understanding of the history of the Zapatista movement? Alberto: We can say that the Zapatista movement became public in 1994, the first day of January, when NAFTA started, the Zapatistas declared war against the Mexican army and they put out their first declaration which is called the First Declaration of the Lacandon Jungle. They called on the villagers of Mexico for an insurrection to topple the government and create a new type of government. That was the uprising of the first of January of 1994. Hadley: What was the context of this uprising? Why did the community bases of support of the Zapatista army decide to rise up in arms? Alberto: It is a political process that started various years ago. It started, as we say, in the short term with a series of reforms and economic and political crises that affected the Mexican nation. Above all, for the indigenous famers it was very important, first of all, the reform to Article 27 of the constitution - the constitution of 1917 that had been a product of the Mexican revolution and that in its article 27, was the article that, in a way, regulated the access to the lands to the farmers, the agrarian article. So, at the beginning of the entrance of the government of Carlos Salinas de Gortari in 1988, started a series of political reforms. -

Mark Baker, Ph.D., Graduate Coordinator December, 2014 ABSTRACT TOWARD LA OTRA COMMUNIDAD: ZAPATISMO AND GRASSROOTS COMMUNITY FORMATION IN HUMBOLDT COUNTY, CA Victor C. Espinosa This thesis interrogates grassroots community formation in Humboldt County, California by examining overlapping political, cultural, and knowledge practices pursued by a local activist community. Specifically, I examine three inter-related collective projects: Acción Zapatista de Humboldt, Peoples’ Action for Rights and Community, and Día de los Muertos, as well as their related affinity projects. I expose how these projects pursued the political and cultural practice of Zapatismo as a grassroots strategy to subvert the criminalization of Humboldt’s migrant and poor constituents, to produce situated knowledge about its collective struggles through popular education, and to convene intercultural dialog through ritual celebration. I use an activist ethnographic research technique involving participation in community spaces, examining community memory though archives and interviews, and coyuntura analysis of the relations of social forces in the community’s recent history. The claiming of Zapatismo informed the production of a community identity rooted in indigenous, anti-neoliberal social struggles that move beyond the confines of formal community organizations and the non-profit industrial complex. -
Discourse, Collective Resistance, and the EZLN As the Radical ‘Other’
The Power of the Word: Discourse, Collective Resistance, and the EZLN as the Radical ‘Other’ Nizar Mohamad Abstract: Departing from the foco theory of revolution that swept Latin America since the 1960s, the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN) represents a turning point in ideological currents marked by the region’s new social movements. Combining ski masks with poetry, Marxism with Christianity, and pan-indigenousness with anti-neoliberal globalization, the EZLN, through an eclectic fusion of discursive pillars, has metamorphosed over time into a group capable of representing all things to all people. Since their official declaration of war ‘against the Mexican state’ on January 1, 1994, the EZLN has witnessed an evolution in their discourse, shifting greater weight and focus onto becoming an organization that can increasingly relate to—and connect with—the world’s oppressed. Accordingly, this paper will attempt to illustrate how the discourse of the EZLN has evolved from focusing on synthesizing pan-indigenousness and class struggle to becoming a more pluralistic expression against neoliberal globalization. This paper will seek to accomplish this by drawing on the evolution of their language and symbols within their political and economic climate, dividing neo-Zapatismo into two main periods—namely 1994-2005, and 2006 onward. Methodologically, this paper will seek to assess the growth of the evolution of their discourse against a backdrop of historical events within Mexico in order to pinpoint overall trends. Transcending traditional notions of revolution and collective resistance, the EZLN’s model enriches international studies, as their popularity as global icons demonstrates the transnationalization of struggle, wherein local plights are increasingly viewed as part of a greater global struggle—connected to a world marked by unprecedented integration. -

02 2007 “Everything for everyone!” Cultural difference, social equality and the politics of the Zapatistas Jens Kastner Translated by Mary O’Neill “The voice of the others will be heard in ours, those others who own nothing, who are condemned to silence and ignorance, who are driven from their homeland and deprived of their history by the arrogance of the powerful...We will demand what is right and right for everyone: freedom, justice, democracy, everything for everyone, and nothing for ourselves.” (CCRI-CG of the EZLN, 16 February 1994)1 Everything for everyone – this demand was already there at the start of the uprising by the Zapatista liberation movement, the EZLN, in Chiapas, Mexico’s southernmost federal state. It began on 1 January 1994, the day the North American free trade agreement between the USA, Canada and Mexico came into force, and since then the Zapatistas have led the struggle against neoliberalism, the exploitation of peasant farmers and the racist oppression of indigenous population on a number of levels. The demands of the cause espoused by the EZLN, symbolized by their black and red flags, are already evident in the extract cited, demands that haven’t always gone well together in the history of the Left: social equality and cultural difference. Taking as their starting point, first of all, their situation as people who are marginalized and discriminated against, as the “others, who have nothing”, they demand their share of society’s wealth. In doing so, they are updating the history of workers’ and farmers’ movements, whose struggles were always concerned with redistribution and finding the (revolutionary, reformist, etc.) answer to the question of ownership of land and the means of production.
