Reading List for Numerical Analysis Group D. Phil. Students MT 2013 Each student should make a serious and continuing effort to familiarise himself/herself with the contents of several books from the following annotated list. The list is divided into subject areas and comments are given on the relative level and difficulty of each book. As a general rule, you should expect to study the most advanced books in the area of your dissertation together with a reasonable spread of books in related areas. A rough guide could be that you should be familiar with about a dozen books drawn from half a dozen of the listed areas. • TUTORIAL in BIOSTATISTICS: the Self-Controlled Case Series Method
STATISTICS IN MEDICINE Statist. Med. 2005; 0:1–31 Prepared using simauth.cls [Version: 2002/09/18 v1.11] TUTORIAL IN BIOSTATISTICS: The self-controlled case series method Heather J. Whitaker1, C. Paddy Farrington1, Bart Spiessens2 and Patrick Musonda1 1 Department of Statistics, The Open University, Milton Keynes, MK7 6AA, UK. 2 GlaxoSmithKline Biologicals, Rue de l’Institut 89, B-1330 Rixensart, Belgium. SUMMARY The self-controlled case series method was developed to investigate associations between acute outcomes and transient exposures, using only data on cases, that is, on individuals who have experienced the outcome of interest. Inference is within individuals, and hence fixed covariates effects are implicitly controlled for within a proportional incidence framework. We describe the origins, assumptions, limitations, and uses of the method. The rationale for the model and the derivation of the likelihood are explained in detail using a worked example on vaccine safety. Code for fitting the model in the statistical package STATA is described. Two further vaccine safety data sets are used to illustrate a range of modelling issues and extensions of the basic model. Some brief pointers on the design of case series studies are provided. The data sets, STATA code, and further implementation details in SAS, GENSTAT and GLIM are available from an associated website. key words: case series; conditional likelihood; control; epidemiology; modelling; proportional incidence Copyright c 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. 1. Introduction The self-controlled case series method, or case series method for short, provides an alternative to more established cohort or case-control methods for investigating the association between a time-varying exposure and an outcome event.

  • March 13, 2019 AMS Primer on Open Access
Robert M. Harington Associate Executive Director, Publishing Publishing Division [email protected] 401.455.4165 401.331.3842 www.ams.org AMS Primer on Open Access Introduction Open access (OA) refers to published scholarly content (such as journal research articles, and books) made openly available in online digital form. This content is free of charge at point of use, free of most copyright and licensing restrictions, and free of technical or other barriers to access (such as digital rights management or requirements to register to access). Communicating and sharing discoveries is an essential part of the research process. Any author of a research paper wants it to be read, and the fewer restrictions placed on access to those papers means that more people may benefit from the research. In many ways, the OA movement is very much in line with the shared mission of researchers, scholarly societies, and publishers. Journal publishing programs perform many services for researchers including peer review, communication, and career advancement. In society publishing programs, revenue from journal publishing directly supports the important work societies do on behalf of their scholarly communities. How do we maximize the dissemination of knowledge while at the same time maintaining both a high level of quality and a sustainable financial future for our professional society, the AMS? The OA movement can be traced to a letter from the year 2000, signed by around 34,000 researchers, demanding publishers make all content free after 6 months. The signatories of the letter said they would boycott any journals refusing to comply. In 2002, the accepted definition of OA was encapsulated in the Budapest Open Access Initiative declaration.

History of Numerical Analysis INTRODUCTION Numerical analysis is the area of mathematics and computer science that creates, analyzes, and implements algorithms for solving numerically the problems of continuous mathematics. Such problems originate generally from real-world applications of algebra, geometry, and calculus, and they involve variables that vary continuously; these problems occur throughout the natural sciences, social sciences, engineering, medicine, and business. During the second half of the twentieth century and continuing up to the present day, digital computers have grown in power and availability.

H. LUCKING Neurologische Universit2tsklinik Freiburg Germany s-ly A procedure is proposed to obtain confidence regions for spectral peak frequencies. The method is based on resampling the penodogram from the estimated spectrum in order to reestimate the spectrum and its peak frequency. We investigate the dependence of the results from the applied spectral estimator in three simulation studies and apply the method to tremor data. Key words: Spectral analysis; Confidence regions; Bootstrap; Tremor. 1. Introduction Spectral analysis is widely applied to investigate oscillatory phenomena in basic medical and biological research (MARSDEN et al., 1969; NELSONet al., 1979; HFXR- MA”, 1982; GUNTHER,BRUNNER and KLUSSMA”, 1983; CLEEVESand FINDLEY, 1987; HEFIER et al., 1987; BEUTERand DE GEOFFROY,1996; F’INNA, MAESTRI,DI CESARE,1996; KHUTORSKAYAand FJODOROVA,1996) and clinical diagnosis (DEUSCHLet al., 1996; Muzr and EBERT,1993). Often, the power of the oscillation and the peak frequency are of major interest. In general, the spectrum and the peak frequency of a stationary stochastic process are a complicated function of the 850 J. TIMMER,M. LAUK,C. H. THE ARF-KERVAIRE INVARIANT PROBLEM IN ALGEBRAIC TOPOLOGY: INTRODUCTION MICHAEL A. HILL, MICHAEL J. HOPKINS, AND DOUGLAS C. RAVENEL ABSTRACT. This paper gives the history and background of one of the oldest problems in algebraic topology, along with a short summary of our solution to it and a description of some of the tools we use. More details of the proof are provided in our second paper in this volume, The Arf-Kervaire invariant problem in algebraic topology: Sketch of the proof. A rigorous account can be found in our preprint The non-existence of elements of Kervaire invariant one on the arXiv and on the third author’s home page. The latter also has numerous links to related papers and talks we have given on the subject since announcing our result in April, 2009. CONTENTS 1. Background and history 3 1.1.
