30 It Happened in Montevideo A look at a hoard of rolls from Uruguay As all collectors know, from time to time something crops up that is quite unexpected and different from anything you’ve seen before. This is certainly the case with a collection of rolls recently imported into the UK from Montevideo in Uruguay, a saga that took a good three years. Earlier articles looking at South America have shown it was a market where pretty well anything was imported, so the majority of rolls are from familiar American, British and German companies. Most are 88-note but with plenty of Artrio-Angelus reproducing rolls, as well as Recordo and QRS Automatic expression rolls – the latter offering more basic expression than reproducing pianos, a type of instrument rarely seen in the UK. The mixture of music, and the condition of the rolls, suggests that the collection is based around the remaining stock from a closed shop. Maybe this was the importer, and piano dealership, Vittone Hnos (Brothers) whose name appears on some box-top labels. So, what was unexpected? It was the final block of rolls made locally in Montevideo. They are on two different labels, the majority on Victor and a few on GH, the initials of their maker, Gioscia Hnos. Autumn 2010 31 Now, anybody with the slightest interest in old records or gramophones will immediately be asking whether this Victor is the famous gramophone maker, or if the name is just a coincidence. The seller actually referred to them as “RCA Victor”, which seemed so far-fetched that it was dismissed (RCA came into the frame very late in the roll-making era). -

DOI: https://doi.org/10.25222/larr.71 LITERATURE AND CULTURAL STUDIES Undesired Presences: Samba, Improvisation, and Afro-politics in 1970s Brazil Stephen Bocskay Universidade Federal de Pernambuco, BR [email protected] This article explores the role of the samba subgenre partido alto as a mode of resistance to modernization and the Brazilian military regime’s disfiguration of samba music in the 1970s. This resistance ultimately led a handful of samba musicians to create the Grêmio Recreativo de Arte Negra Escola de Samba Quilombo in 1975. While it is true that Quilombo nurtured Afro-Brazilian music and culture, the author demonstrates that its leader and cofounder, Antônio Candeia Filho, acted as a samba preservationist and a pioneer, referencing music of the African diaspora, but also as someone who drew the line when it came to espousing Pan-Africanism. The aversion to Pan- Africanism in Rio de Janeiro’s samba community heightened in the late 1970s, as Black Soul, among other foreign sounds and cultural presences, was perceived as a threat to the primacy of samba. Tal resistência estimulou um bom número de sambistas a fundar o Grêmio Recreativo de Arte Negra Escola de Samba Quilombo em 1975. Tradition and Innovation in Brazilian Popular Music: Keyboard Percussion Instruments in Choro by Mark James Duggan A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Musical Arts Faculty of Music University of Toronto © Copyright by Mark James Duggan 2011 Tradition and Innovation in Brazilian Popular Music: Keyboard Percussion Instruments in Choro Mark James Duggan Doctor of Musical Arts Faculty of Music University of Toronto 2011 Abstract The use of keyboard percussion instruments in choro, one of the earliest forms of Brazilian popular music, is a relatively recent phenomenon and its expansion into university music programs and relocation from small clubs and private homes to concert halls has changed the way that choro is learned and performed. For many Brazilians, this kind of innovation in a “traditional” genre represents a challenge to their notion of a Brazilian cultural identity. This study examines the dynamic relationship that Brazilians have with representations of their culture, especially in the area of popular music, through an in depth discussion of the use of keyboard percussion instruments within the genre of choro. I discuss the implications of using keyboard percussion in choro with a detailed description of its contemporary practice and a critical examination of the sociological and academic issues that surround choro historically and as practiced today. This includes an historical overview of choro and organology of keyboard percussion instruments in Brazil. I discuss multiple perspectives on the genre including a ii consideration of choro as part of the “world music” movement and choro’s ambiguous relationship to jazz. Through an examination of the typical instrumentation and performance conventions used in choro, I address the meanings and implications of the adaptation of those practices and of the various instrumental roles found in choro to keyboard percussion instruments. -

MARIS JONES “QUEM FOI QUE INVENTOU BRASIL?” THE SYMBOLIC ROLE OF MUSIC AND RACE IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF BRAZILIAN NATIONAL IDENTITY Through its complex colonial history, Brazil has become a nation of stunning ethnic diversity. Its citizens categorize themselves into over 100 racial categories which overlay deep rooted social and political power imbalances. How, then, can a unified Brazilian cul- ture b e drawn from such a heterogeneous nation? In tackling this weighty question, Maris Jones, Brown University ’15, turns to music as a shaping force in the invention of brasi - lidade —a national identity which, she argues, simultaneously incorporated and excluded Afro -Brazilians. As the original progenitors of samba, Afro -Brazilians saw their musical style enthusiastically adopted but whitened by a government that continued to enacted discriminatory racial policies against them. Yet in the later 20th century, a reclamation of samba by a number of politically active groups transformed the genre once again into a symbol of Black identity. Far more than merely a facet of culture, Brazilian music was a historically potent tool that played a part in shaping national identity.
