Bogus callers and phone scams Doorstep callers Not everyone that comes to your door will be a genuine caller. Some may try to trick their way in to steal money or valuables. This is known as a ‘distraction burglary’. • Chain - secure the door bar or chain before opening the door. Don’t leave your door open or on the latch for anyone to walk in. If you have no chain, look through the window and ask who they are. • Check - check their identification. Genuine callers will have identification and will not mind showing it to you. They should also be happy to wait while you call their company to check who they are. • Doubt - if in doubt do not let them in and call your

family/friends for advice, or the police on 101. 15 A Bogus callers may claim to be from large organisations B such as the Council, Police, NHS or utility supplier.

CDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ They may say that something has come in to your back garden, they need to use your toilet or want a glass of water as they are unwell. They might also pose as builders or gardeners. Never agree to have work done straight away. Always get other quotes from companies recommended by a friend / relative. Do not pay them up front and never agree to them driving you to your bank to withdraw money. Bogus callers can be convincing and persuasive. If someone does get in to your home without you inviting them, dial 999 and ask for the police. Letter and Phone scams If you receive a call about a fraud taking place from your bank account and you are asked for your banking details, do not give your passwords or PIN number out. No one will ever have cause to ask you for this information over the phone. Have you received post or phone calls offering you money or prizes and been told you need to send a cheque to receive your prize? You might get letters from a psychic offering a reading or letters that tell you that ignoring the letter will bring bad luck. These letters are just ways to get you to part with your money. Never send money off. If you have received such telephone calls or letters you can register with the telephone or mail preference services free of charge to stop many of these. Healthy eating and nutrition Eating a varied and balanced diet will help you stay healthy and active, reduce the risk of falling and maintain a healthy weight. It is important to eat three times a day. If you find it difficult to eat three big meals try having five or six smaller snacks. Make sure you drink plenty of liquids. Choose a variety of different foods each day, including IJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ plenty of fruits, vegetables and starchy foods such as rice, bread and potatoes. Include some protein-rich foods such as meat, fish, eggs, nuts, lentils or beans and some milk and dairy foods like cheese and yoghurt. A healthy diet should provide you with the right amount of energy (calories). If you take in too much energy you will gain weight. If you take in too little you will lose weight. You need enough energy to carry out everyday tasks such as walking and moving, but also for things like breathing, pumping blood around the body and thinking, which also require energy. For more information visit: • www.nutrition.org.uk • www.gov.uk/government/publications/the-eatwell-guide Emergency Store Cupboard An emergency store of dried, long life, canned, packet and frozen food is useful, especially during bad weather or illness if you cannot get out as easily. Power of Attorney (POA) This enables you to temporarily, or permanently, grant someone else the authority to deal with your affairs. General Power of Attorney You can appoint someone, usually a trusted friend or relative, to make decisions and take action with you or on your behalf. A doctor will need to confirm capacity issues and the application must be registered with the Office of the Public Guardian before it can be confirmed.

Spelthorne Personal Alarm Network (SPAN) SPAN is provided by Spelthorne Borough Council to enable older or disabled people to live independently in their own homes. Individuals are linked to our Care Centre and help is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. 86 ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQR S Each person is supplied with a small alarm unit, which uses the same line as their telephone. If you do not have a landline a mobile sim is available. Every unit has a small pendant which is worn around the neck, on the wrist, or as a clip. When the pendant is pressed the alarm unit makes a telephone call to our centre. The operator speaks to the caller and finds out what is wrong (ie medical emergency, bogus caller), they then arrange help by calling the emergency services or a relative/friend. If the individual cannot speak, the operator will still know who the caller is. After installation the SPAN service will maintain your equipment and replace batteries and straps when required to ensure the equipment is working properly. As well as the alarm we offer other types of equipment to help people live independently in their own homes. This includes things like bed sensors, falls detectors, gas detectors, door sensors and smoke alarms. Applications can be made by any agency or by the user or their family. A paper application is available or there is an online form for self-referrals (not for professional use) which can be found on the Council’s website at www. spelthorne.gov.uk/span. Wills A will is useful to make if you have property, money, valuables or other personal items that you wish to leave to family, friends or charity, or if you have specific requests about where you want your remains to be placed. You can use a ‘do it yourself’ kit that is available from stationers or do one online. Alternatively you can contact a solicitor that undertakes wills, probate and inheritance matters. You might want to consider making a ‘living will’. These outline what you would want to happen if you became incapacitated or unable to voice your views directly, for example following a severe stroke, or if you are deemed brain dead. It outlines the care you would like if you are unable to tell people. It also informs your next of kin, upon your death, your wishes for your funeral. Spelthorne Council has 4 social centres for older people within the Borough (see page 107) which are friendly and busy places where older people can socialise and have fun. As a volunteer you will provide companionship and support to people helping them to take part in activities. You might help serve the lunches or help in the tea bar selling drinks and snacks. There are also opportunities to help with the delivery of meals on wheels for those who cannot make it out to our social centres. You can volunteer as much or as little as you like and we guarantee you a warm welcome.
