Making Dantan a Destination of Archaeological Tourism
Making Dantan a Destination of Archaeological Tourism Tarun Tapas Mukherjee Bhatter College, Dantan Introduction History of Dantan needs to be rewritten. Many scholars like Haraprasad Sastri, Nagendranath Basu, A. K. Banerjee, B. N. Mukherjee made a number of guesses on Dantan. Long ago Nihar Ranjan Ray clearly identified Dantan with the ancient and medieval province Dandabhukti, the capital of which must have been in a few places of Dantan. For, a number of provincial rulers—sometimes in the status of independent monarch, ruled here and built their settlements. The archaeological remains of those sites are still visible here and there. The entire region of Dantan has yielded large number of ancient artefacts which are still to be studied academically. In fact, Dantan remained a neglected place for a long period—culturally and economically. It is high time now that we reconsider the historical and academic importance of Dantan in a new era of information technology. Discovery of Moghalmari Buddhist Monastery It was Prof. Asok Dutta who—through his intensive research for over a decade and scientific excavation—unearthed a Buddhist Monastery at Moghalmari. The monastery occupies a small area of an entire Buddhist settlement scattered at the Moghalmari village. Many structures are either unexplored or buried beneath the earth. Unearthing them will also open up a new chapter in the history of Bengal. But Moghalmari is not the only archaeological site here. In fact the entire region from Raibania (Orissa) through Chitrolekha International Magazine on Art and Design, (ISSN 2231-4822), Vol. 4, No. 1, 2014 URL of the Issue: www.chitrolekha.com/v4n1.php Available at www.chitrolekha.com/V4/n1/08_Tourism_Dantan_Moghalmari.pdf Kolkata, India. -

Out of these nine species four species namely Bellamya bengalensis (Lamarck,1882, Pila globosa (swainson, 1828), Lamellidens marginalis (Lamarck, 1819) and Lymnaea acuminata (Lamarck, 1822) are most abundant and found in all most all twenty nine revenue blocks of undivided Paschim Medinipur District. The estimated molluscan species ranges from 80,00 to 135,000 Boss [3] and Van Bruggen [4] estimated the same ranges 50,000-200,000. Seddon [5] reported 5000 freshwater species of molluscs. Majority of the freshwater species of West Bengal are regarded as supplementary food resources of village people as well as urban citizen. -
3. Study Area: 3.1 Total Geographical Area
Ph.D. thesis: Study area: Ecofloristic survey of aquatic and marshy land angiosperms of Paschim Medinipur district, West Bengal, India. 3. Study Area: 3.1 Total geographical Area Paschim Medinipur, situated in the southern portion of West Bengal, has been fixed from the former Medinipur district, the then biggest district of India, and approached into existence in the present form since 1st January 2002. It is located between 22° 57' 10" and 21° 36' 35" North latitude and between 88° 12' 40" and 86° 33' 50" East longitude. Paschim Medinipur is restricted by the Bankura district from the northern side and the Purba Medinipur district from the southeastern side. The southern boundary of the district is merged with Balasore and Mayurbhanj district of Orissa and western boundary is merged with Singbhum and the eastern district of Jharkhand. According to Survey of India, the entire geographical range of Paschim Medinipur district in 2001 (9.75 thousand sq. km.) accounted for 11.01 % of the entire geographical part of the state (88.75 thousand sq. km). The total forest region of the district was 1.70 thousand sq. km. Which accounted for 14.31 % of the entire forest part of the state (11.88 thousand sq. km.). Inhabited villages (over 7500) of the district show highly differential features and indicators of human development. While there are pockets agglomerations of highly prosperous and developed villages in the eastern portion of the district, there are also villages of distress in the western part. 637 villages have been identified by the Government of West Bengal as backward villages that belong mostly to the western part. -
