The views and conclusions herein are those of the workshop participants and the authors, and should not be taken to correspond to the policies, procedures, opinions, and views of the European Union, GBIF, BUSE or Government of Zimbabwe. 2 Executive Summary The overall objective of the initiation workshop was to familiarize stakeholders with the objectives of the project, consolidate the lists of priority NTFPs species (Food and medicinal) from representative communities in and around the five biodiversity hotspots, identify additional information holding institutions and develop a plan of action and to share knowledge and skills acquired from the BID capacity enhancement workshop with all stakeholders. The Workshop also sought to lay the foundation for subsequent work on the mobilisation and digitisation of biodiversity data in Zimbabwe with specific activities described in the approved project proposal. The initiation workshop was a formal review of information gathered during some community meetings held in five biodiversity hotspot areas: Hwange, Chipinge, Chimanimani, Nyanga and the Great dyke. -

4 Nyabira-Mazowe War Veterans’ Association: A Microcosm of the National Land Occupation Movement Louis Masuko Introduction Land reforms have taken shape in many countries of the world, across all continents and at different stages of their respective development. In Zimbabwe, the Fast Track Land Reform Programme (FTLRP), an outcome of invasions and subsequent occupations of Large Scale Commercial Farms (LSCF), shook the Zimbabwean and Western aristocrats’ establishment in 2000 and has been characterised as the ‘first radical shift in agrarian property rights in the post Cold War world’ (Moyo and Yeros 2005). The FTLRP radically changed, not only the unequal and inequitable land distribution in Zimbabwe, but insecurity of land tenure and unsustainable and suboptimal land use as well. It ended the hegemony of the minority whites on land and in the agriculture sector (Masuko 2004), empowered the landless black majority and set a solid pathway for solving the long standing land question in Zimbabwe. Opinion surrounding the causes of Zimbabwe’s land reform, the forces behind it, its timing, its outcome and its legitimacy differs, largely along lines of the diverse interests of the different contenders and/or their ideological inclinations. The Politics of Writing 'Democratic' Narratives in Zimbabwe
Different narration, same history: The politics of writing ‘democratic’ narratives in Zimbabwe Walter Kudzai Barure & Irikidzayi Manase Different narration, same history: The politics of writing ‘democratic’ narratives in Zimbabwe Over the past five decades, Zimbabwe’s political trajectories were characterised by a historiographic revision and deconstruction that revealed varying ideological perceptions and positions of political actors. This article reconsiders the current shifts in the Zimbabwean historiography and focuses on the politics of positioning the self in the national narrative. The article analyses three Zimbabwean political autobiographies written by political actors from the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), particularly Michael Auret’s From Liberator to Dictator: An Insider’s Account of Robert Mugabe’s Descent into Tyranny (2009), Morgan Tsvangirai’s At the Deep End (2011), and David Coltart’s The Struggle Continues: 50 Years of Tyranny in Zimbabwe (2016). It also discusses how writing in Zimbabwe is a contested terrain that is bifurcated between oppositional and dominant imaginaries of politics, the revolutionary tradition, and past performances of power. Introduction This article considers how oppositional narratives answer back to patriotic narratives’ denigration of opposition and civic discourses, and their exclusion of the citizenship of minorities such as white Zimbabweans. Zimbabwe- an letters have witnessed the rise of a body of writings, produced by the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) and other political and human rights actors, termed ‘democratic’ narratives, which contest patri- otic narratives that were constructed using a singular version of history (see Ranger who defines patriotic history as a monolithic version of history that supports the performance of power by ZANU-PF political actors). -

The fire season which started on 31 July to 31 October 2020 came in the backdrop of the Covid19 pandemic which challenged the Agency and its partners to be innovative in veld fire management. To comply with Covid19 regulations limited meetings were conducted with increased social distancing and reduced travel . The Agency adopted social media as a means of information dissemination on veld fire management as well as working with local leadership. A total of 1 178 veld fire incidences were recorded between 31 July and 31 October 2020 resulted in 806 457.84 hectares being burnt. -
Global Suicide Rates and Climatic Temperature
SocArXiv Preprint: May 25, 2020 Global Suicide Rates and Climatic Temperature Yusuke Arima1* [email protected] Hideki Kikumoto2 [email protected] ABSTRACT Global suicide rates vary by country1, yet the cause of this variability has not yet been explained satisfactorily2,3. In this study, we analyzed averaged suicide rates4 and annual mean temperature in the early 21st century for 183 countries worldwide, and our results suggest that suicide rates vary with climatic temperature. The lowest suicide rates were found for countries with annual mean temperatures of approximately 20 °C. The correlation suicide rate and temperature is much stronger at lower temperatures than at higher temperatures. In the countries with higher temperature, high suicide rates appear with its temperature over about 25 °C. We also investigated the variation in suicide rates with climate based on the Köppen–Geiger climate classification5, and found suicide rates to be low in countries in dry zones regardless of annual mean temperature. Moreover, there were distinct trends in the suicide rates in island countries. Considering these complicating factors, a clear relationship between suicide rates and temperature is evident, for both hot and cold climate zones, in our dataset. Finally, low suicide rates are typically found in countries with annual mean temperatures within the established human thermal comfort range. This suggests that climatic temperature may affect suicide rates globally by effecting either hot or cold thermal stress on the human body.
