    voices BY ELAINA LOVELAND Educating Saudi Women An interview with Haifa Jamal Al-Lail, president of Efat University, a women’s university in Saudi Arabia HAIFA JAMAL AL-LAIL, a native of Saudi Arabia, joined Effat University in 1998 and began her tenure as presi- dent in May 2008. She was named one of 1000 Women for the Nobel Peace Prize 2005 and is the winner of the Distinguished Arab Woman Award in 2005. A respected author and researcher, she is well known for her exper- tise in privatization and empowerment of women. She is the author of a number of articles and has developed and taught undergraduate and graduate courses on topics such as public administration and public policy. Before joining Effat University, Al-Lail was the first dean of girls’ campus in King Abdulaziz University. She was a visiting scholar at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University in 2001. She partici- pated in the Summer Institute for Women in Higher Education Administration at Bryn Mawr College in 2000. She received a PhD in public policy from the University of Southern California (USC).     Annual Report 2017 ACG 150 | Advancing the Legacy, Growing Greece A plan to leverage education & re-invigorate the economy Board Chair’s Message The excitement and energy at The American College of Greece continues to be evident in the many accomplishments of our faculty, staff and students. Our graduates also continue to make contributions throughout Greece and the world. It is clear that the education they have received at the College is serving them well. As the new Chair of the Board, I’m delighted to enter my ninth year of service to the College as a trustee. I continue to be impressed by the talent and commitment of the faculty and staff. Dr. Horner has certainly assembled a truly talented team of academic leaders. We will miss the wise counsel of our immediate past chair, Phil Korologos, and remain grateful for the decades of service from the Korologos family. In honor of this service, Phil was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Law at the Deree Commencement in June. This past spring, we also recognized the service of Nikos Ebeoglou, who completed his term with the ACG Board and played a vital role in the transition of Alba. In addition, we welcomed to the Board Drake Behrakis, who will begin his first three-year term and brings great enthusiasm to advancing Hellenism in America. Finally, we expressed both gratitude and sadness at the departure of our colleague, Olga Julius, who served Pierce for over 40 years, including the last 14 years as its Principal. Perhaps there is no better example of the school motto, “Non Ministari, Sed Ministrare.” Many thanks to our alumni and friends who also continue give generously to the College.

As we report on ACE initiatives and face the challenging times ahead, we would like to thank the ACE Board of Directors, our nearly 2,000 members, and the entire higher education community for your efforts over the past year. We are pleased ACE has been able to work on your behalf and look forward to continuing to do so in the future. ACE’s advocacy at the federal level, encompassing Congress, the new Trump administration, and the courts, ensures the voice of Amer- ican higher education is part of important policy conversations that impact students, families, and institutions. In 2017, ACE’s Division of Government and Public Affairs coordinated higher education community initiatives to protect Dreamers and respond to tax reform proposals harmful to higher education, among other public policy efforts. The Center for Education Attainment and Innovation (CEAI) worked to advance its objective of supporting post-traditional learners. CEAI’s work included expanded efforts to develop and quality assure faculty development training offered by ACUE’s Course in Effective Teach- ing Practices and conducting research about connections between instructional quality, student outcomes, and institutional efficiency.     2016 ANNUAL REPORT ACE STRATEGIC PRIORITIES 1. LEADERSHIP Develop and deliver high-quality and innovative programs, services, and thought leadership on current and emerging higher education issues. This work will derive from our collaboration, convening power, and expertise in research, leadership development, internationalization, and attainment, as well as our efforts to identify opportunities for strategic growth. 2. ADVOCACY Coordinate, convene, and lead the higher education community by providing strong advocacy strategies to advance policies and practices that ensure American higher education continues as a world leader in access, quality, and student success. This work will derive from our efforts focused on federal, state, and international initiatives, as well as our legal, public affairs, research, attainment, and fundraising activities. 3. ORGANIZATIONAL EXCELLENCE Recruit, serve, and retain members and employees by improving internal culture and effectiveness to achieve ACE’s mission. This work will derive from our efforts to raise individual performance, accountability, and collaboration; improve management of our resources; and apply best practices and tools related to systems, media, communications, and data management. This report summarizes the programmatic and advocacy activities which, driven by our strategic priorities, enabled the Council to serve nearly 2,000 members nationwide during a period of both significant challenges and great opportunities for the entire higher education community. The Center for Education Attainment and Innovation (CEAI) worked throughout 2016 on initiatives focused on alternative credential pathways so as to increase the number of Americans able to earn a college degree or credential, including the innovative Alternative Credit Project and ACE’s College Credit Recommendation Service (CREDIT®).

    Equity and Access in Higher Education and Academic Libraries Amid the COVID-19 Pandemic The COVID-19 global pandemic has exposed deeply rooted inequities and the precariousness of institutional structures across all socio-cultural and geographic spaces. Overwhelmed by the public health crisis, governments and non-governmental organizations have introduced numerous policies to stem the spread of COVID-19 with varying degrees of success at the local, national, and international levels. Similarly, academic institutions have responded to this crisis by developing policies that address the immediate needs of their respective constituencies and institutional partners. Although these policies vary in scope and intent, we are troubled by developments on a number of fronts. These include: ● Marginalization of institutions with limited resources, underrepresented communities, and indigenous voices in the post COVID-19 institutional frameworks; ● Promotion of “e-first” collection development strategies that are governed by licensing law that disrupt the flow of information and undermine indigenous publishing cultures around the world, especially in the Global South; ● Over-reliance on large-scale, dominant publishers and distributors of academic content, thereby intensifying the marginalization of small and traditional publishers and of scholarly communities based in other parts of the world; ● Over-reliance on large-scale commercial publishers whose profit-driven business models endanger the collection, preservation, and distribution of robust ephemeral
