Zoological Letters (2018) 4:32 https://doi.org/10.1186/s40851-018-0114-y REVIEW Open Access The phylum Vertebrata: a case for zoological recognition Naoki Irie1,2* , Noriyuki Satoh3 and Shigeru Kuratani4 Abstract The group Vertebrata is currently placed as a subphylum in the phylum Chordata, together with two other subphyla, Cephalochordata (lancelets) and Urochordata (ascidians). The past three decades, have seen extraordinary advances in zoological taxonomy and the time is now ripe for reassessing whether the subphylum position is truly appropriate for vertebrates, particularly in light of recent advances in molecular phylogeny, comparative genomics, and evolutionary developmental biology. Four lines of current research are discussed here. First, molecular phylogeny has demonstrated that Deuterostomia comprises Ambulacraria (Echinodermata and Hemichordata) and Chordata (Cephalochordata, Urochordata, and Vertebrata), each clade being recognized as a mutually comparable phylum. Second, comparative genomic studies show that vertebrates alone have experienced two rounds of whole-genome duplication, which makes the composition of their gene family unique. Third, comparative gene-expression profiling of vertebrate embryos favors an hourglass pattern of development, the most conserved stage of which is recognized as a phylotypic period characterized by the establishment of a body plan definitively associated with a phylum. This mid-embryonic conservation is supported robustly in vertebrates, but only weakly in chordates. Fourth, certain complex patterns of body plan formation (especially of the head, pharynx, and somites) are recognized throughout the vertebrates, but not in any other animal groups. For these reasons, we suggest that it is more appropriate to recognize vertebrates as an independent phylum, not as a subphylum of the phylum Chordata. -

ABSTRACT: The presented paper contains a detailed description of four species of the genus Craniscus DalI, 1871, found in the Upper Oxfordian of Bielawy and Wapienno quarries, Kujawy area. Three of them: Craniscus bipartitus (Munster, 1837), Craniscus antiquior (Jelly, 1843) and Craniscus corallinus (Quenstedt, 1852) have already been described from Poland, the fourth, however - Craniscus tripartitus (Munster, 1840) , had only been known from the Lower Oxfordian of North Bavaria. The Craniscus specimens come from slope deposits of sponge-microbialitic bioherm. This is indicated by the fact that almost all specimens are dorsal valves, separated posthumously from ventral valves. The condition of some specimens and the rock lithology suggests, that the deposition was very violent in some cases and brachiopods were buried alive. The studied material is relatively well-preserved, which alIowes an accurate reading of the location of muscle scal's. Euganean Hills the Euganean Hills Are Located in the Veneto Region
Euganean Hills The Euganean Hills are located in the Veneto region. They are often referred to as “sea cliffs” that stand proudly at the heart of the eastern part of the river Po Valley. This group of hills stands out on the south-westerly horizon of the province of Padua, at approx. 60 kilometres from Venice and on a clear day the clock tower in St. Mark's Square can be seen from the top of Mount Gemola. The Euganean Hills cover a total area of approx. 19,000 hectares. The perimeter of the area is 65 kilometres, with around one hundred hills which reach a maximum height of 604 meters asl, as in the case of Mount Venda. The area is made up of 15 municipalities areas and since 1989 they have been protected by the Euganean Hills Regional Park authority. The hills were formed by a series of volcanic eruptions. The first activity dates at about 43 million years ago, but it was only the second volcanic phase, about 35 million years ago, that gave the region its present shape. From the the lava cooled down rocks like trachyte, rhyolite, latite, and strands of basalt were formed. The climate The climate is milder than that of the surrounding plain, in winter the thermometer doesn't drop below zero as frequently and for as long as it does in the plain. In summer it is cooler and less humid then the lowlands. This explains how the hills with a southern exposure, bathed by direct sunlight, can easily support vegetation like olive trees, cypresses, laurels, and other species of Mediterranean flora. -

The world-famous collection of Naturalis Biodiversity Center in Leiden contains abundant fossil ma- terial, including brachiopods from the Central Paratethys (nine collecting sites from Poland, and one locality each from Hungary and Romania). More than 1400 (partly fragmentary) brachiopod speci- mens represent nine species of eight genera: Lingula cf. dregeri Andreae, Discinisca leopolitana (Fried- berg), Discradisca polonica (Radwańska & Radwański), Cryptopora nysti (Davidson), Gryphus cf. miocae- nicus (Michelotti), Argyrotheca cuneata (Risso), A. bitnerae Dulai, Joania cordata (Risso) and Megerlia sp. Most of the identified species are already known from the Central Paratethys, but the Leiden collec- tion contains a new Argyrotheca species (A. bitnerae), which was described recently in a separate paper (on the basis of more material, but including also Naturalis specimens). Most of the studied brachio- pods confirm earlier records known from the literature, but in some cases important new information is available on the distribution of the identified taxa within the Central Paratethys. These are, respec- tively, the first record of Discinisca leopolitana from Rybnica and Monastyrz, the genus Gryphus from Rybnica and from the Miocene of Poland, Argyrotheca bitnerae from Karsy, and Joania cordata from Várpalota.
